NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! THERE'S SOMEBODY USING A MAC!!!!!!! NOOOOO!!!! Macs aren't bad, but they aren't good either. I used to think they were for the simple minded, until I saw somebody struggling to open Microsoft Word on a Mac. Bottom line, nothing could convert me from PC to Mac, even if Windows 8 will be the biggest let-down in history, I'll still be a PC, I don't like Macs, and yet I own two of them, that I never use.

I don't believe that the modding community drives the game industry, I think the game industry caters to the hard-core gamers, like myself, and guys like you.

Well, I never really meant that it solely drives the industry itself, but it is indeed an integral piece of the larger tapestry that makes up the gaming industry. It's what brings newcomers into the scene, it brings new ideas to the table, and allows people to experiment/expand their horizons. Without modability in games and their engines, I would've never had any interest in getting a job in the gaming industry. Hell, I probably wouldn't have near as much interest in games and computers in general.

Heh, take that picture, put it in a much more open, brighter room. Get rid of the laptops, make everyone skinnier, and get rid of the glasses. Add a bunch of tables, and desktop PCs with minimal wiring(Just power for Monitor and PC, and Mouse/KB), using a Wireless N Router and appropriate USB Adapters. Add some drinks/snacks then you'll get the LAN parties that I have.

Man, I could just imagine how bad the BO must be in that room in the pic.

Having been to a LAN party...that picture is not representative. Of course, between sessions of TF2 we bought a case of beer and played Beer Pong...yeah, we're ballers like that

I can't believe everyone is going "oh that's not like my LAN parties" etc... OF COURSE IT ISN'T!!! Shit I've been to a couple of LAN parties myself (back when my box was top of the line) and they are NOTHING LIKE THAT PICTURE. I chose all those pictures on purpose to be the worst representatives of their respected gamer cliques as a form of satire on how this thread picks the worst points of all the systems and makes those the entire point of it's arguments!

Furthermore the only screen you can see is like Trillian or Facebook Messenger or something, I don't even think it's a LAN party.

You guys surprise me more and more everyday...

Yeah, my LAN parties were no where close to this, now if I held it at my house it'd be a different story.... there's so many computers and wires running every which way you'd almost think that it's techno-geek heaven. Although I bet techno-geek heaven would be like a googol of googolplexes times better. Anti-gravitational fields, hover cars, time machines, teleporters, jetpacks, a watch that can tie your shoes, recyclable clothes..... ooooooohhh so many things are possible, yet many others are only imaginable.

Yeah, because it is easier, and there isn't a mess of wires. With N being 300mbps, whereas most Wired hubs only run 100mbps, bandwidth clogging or lag is not a big issue at all. We also use XBox 360s, and it helps not to have a giant mess like in that pic Mr. Green posted.

You can calm down, I know they aren't like that, and I understand what kind of humor/satire you were using. What's funny about all it though, is that I know someone who fits perfectly into that demographic; He's like 300 pounds, with a 300-pound dragon of a girlfriend, likely never showers, is hentai-obsessed, constantly brags about how "awesome" his computer is 24/7, would probably hump his own computer if it had a pussy, leeches off welfare, has tacky blue-died hair, looks like an inuit with downs syndrome, and always talks as if he had a scrotum in his mouth.

We tend to poke fun at him because of some of the really dumb decisions he makes(like wanting to bring up a child while living on welfare...), the fact it doesn't seem like he makes any sort of effort to improve himself/his life(Like getting a job), and the fact he rambles on about shit nobody cares about, or wants to hear - Like how he used to brag and go into detail about what disgusting sexual activities he's partaken in with his dragon of a girlfriend the night before. (or, alternately, how his computer is like the best ever, and can run X game at full 60fps. All while telling everyone else that their PCs don't compare, or if your PC has an Intel CPU, he'd say that it sucks and isn't like his "awesome" AMD "rig")

Anyhow, I went off-topic. Again, I prefer PC, but I'm not opposed to consoles either. I find it fucking retarded when someone has a gigantic aneurysm after a game isn't released exclusively for PC, and goes on a gigantic temper-tantrum spewing shit like "WAAH THEY DON'T DESERVE THE GAME!!!111oneone FUCKIN 1nf3r10r C0ns0leF4gs!11". It's like: "Wow, what makes you so special that you deserve it more than any other person in the gaming scene based on the platform they choose? Unless you and every other user of your preferred platform personally and collectively sucked the cock of the developer of said game, you're only just as deserving of the game as anyone else. Why is it that other people have to suffer and miss out because of your narrow-minded sense of entitlement?"

I've seen this far too often in the Duke community, and I'm quite sick of even hearing about it.

Answer for topic:

PCs are more powerful, but require more technical know-how and patience to get the most out of. Also needs to be fed $$$ every year if one wishes to keep one's rig at all current. Though one could do this, one will still be primarily playing console games on one's super-PC, because almost all games these days are made for the consoles, then ported to PC. So you might get some extra resolution here and there, more advanced effects, etc. Essentially you will still be playing a game that has been designed to work on PS3/360. Online gameplay is free (WoW + contemporaries notwithstanding), and one can reasonably expect dedicated servers unless playing MW2. Obviously we have the age-old input of keyboard n' mouse. Some love it, some don't. Personally I like my keyb' n' mouse with Command & Conquer and stuff, but not much else.

Consoles are less powerful, but require zero thought on the part of the owner. Plug it in, put disc in, it goes. You might have to wait for installation on a PS3 game, but beyond that it's basically plug and play. Unless you're playing Wii, you pretty much have access to all the same games that PC heads have access to. Console games generally cost a tenner more than their PC versions (at least in the UK). Consoles cost far less than any gaming-equivalent PC. Note I said 'gaming-equivalent', not spec-equivalent. Developers can achieve much more with far lesser specs on consoles because of the fixed hardware. This is why you see PC versions of games which have minimum-requirements that are already way above the maximum limit of PS3 and 360. Then the console version even tends to look somewhere near to the PC version on mid settings (not minimum!).

Conclusion:

If you have a very nice PC out of necessity due to work etc, then you may as well get your gaming needs sated by it, too. If you just have a standard consumer-level PC that's mainly only good for browsing, document writing and little bits of this and that, I would personally find it difficult to recommend PC gaming to you. You're going to spend a lot just to get it up to console standard in terms of graphics and that, and if you aren't already a hardcore PC gamer, you might not like the thought of being sat playing a game at a desk, or like the prospect of having your big noisy-as-fuck PC rig in the living room in order to plug it into your nice HD television. By comparison, something along the lines of a PS3 slim (and maybe that new Xbox) seems completely silent, compliments the other bits of gear you have under your television, and yeah it just goes no hassle.

So, probably get a console. PC gaming seems to be going the way of the dodo. Side-bonus - your PC won't be having important drivers overwritten and other such hilarity which sometimes ensues when installing a new game to your PC. You also won't have to fuck about with activation codes and DRMs which infringe upon your fair use rights. Console games you buy usually have some kind of resell value. Hardly anybody actually pays money for legit versions of PC games (hence how the consoles have exerted dominance over the PC in the past five years), even fewer people buy second-hand PC games. A real gaming PC is loud, has very particular cooling requirements, and draws as much power from the grid as about two washing machines, making your electricity bill very interesting reading.

I really don't agree with this, and if you can back that statement up I would be greatful.

Left 4 Dead, to name one example, was designed for the PC and ported to the Xbox - it's common knowledge. I play L4D on the Xbox, and I have to say it does play very well on the Xbox controller.

Lots of games were designed for the PC, but a lot still are designed from the ground up for all 3 platforms. And when they're designed for all three platforms they're really just designed for consoles to meet their limitations. Unless they make the versions for each platform with exclusive content in some way.

No serious person flat-out prefers one to the other because they obviously have different uses, and we need both.

Without PCs, we would not have games, not even console games. Games are developed on PCs.

Without consoles, we would still have games, BUT not nearly as many and not nearly the same quality. It is harder to pirate console games and consoles are better suited to the mass market, which brings much $$ into gaming.

If the question is which do you prefer for playing games, console or PC (which by the way is NOT the question posed by the thread topic), then it seems pretty obvious that there is no correct answer and it will depend on the type of person you are, your experiences growing up, and various other factors. For me, consoles and PCs are equally good for playing games, and they bring different things to the table so I would not want to be without either one. However, if I were forced to choose I would go with PC, because I like to make mods and use mods, and because of emulation.

In literal terms, you are probably correct. What I meant was that games like L4D don't 'push' the PC platform to it's limits, since regardless of what it was developed for and then ported to, during development they will have had tyo keep the console specs in mind, and thus could not design the game to take full advantage of the PC platform.

L4D minimum specs:

* Supported OS: Microsoft Windows XP / Vista / Vista64
* Processor: Pentium 4 3.0GHz
* Memory: 1 GB
* Graphics: 128 MB, Shader model 2.0, ATI 9600, NVidia 6600 or better
* Hard Drive: At least 7.5 GB of free space
* Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

Not that far off the 360, really.
