Their site has been down for a day or two. Anyone know what's going on?

EDIT: Looks like they've got a new Domain name:
http://www.dukenukemreloaded.com/

The team is upgrading their site this weekend. By the 5 Dec. they will be back in business.

@ the Commander
Why Kill Yourself? They've got at least three to four years ahead. Eduke32 rocks. Duke Plus Rocks. You guys are and will be number one, in Duke IMNHO. It's Unreal for them, one of many mods out there.

I have just had a look at their FAQ:

Quote

Q: Will Duke Reloaded, play like the original?
A: Short answer, No.
Long answer: The game will play like "most modern shooters". But our highest priority, is to keep the "Duke Feel".
Insanely fast running speeds, and hyperjumping are a thing of the past. That is not the direction we are going for.

"Duke Feel" without fast running and big jumps? Nonsense. Just another shooter. Dead project for me. Hail to DNE.

Yeah, that's stupid. Whats the point? I viewed Duke Reloaded as more of a classic alternative to the modern DNF, that feels like more of a modern shooter than a classic one from what I've seen. So now with that statement alone I no longer care about Duke Reloaded.

Oh shit, there's no thumbs up option on forums...

I haven't really been following this much at all, so I want to confirm 2 pieces of information.

1. This will be free and standalone right?
2. I know the release date is "when it's done" but can someone speculate when that will actually be plus or minus 6 months? A year? 3 years?...

Never maybe. I usually never have high hopes for mod like this, because they always take forever and the developers ultimately abandon the project. Remember the planned They Live sequel for Half-Life 2?

The Shrinker and The Ripper sketches are superb. But looking at how the media section of the site slowly covers with dust... oh well...

It'll be free and standalone. As far as a release timeframe goes, they really want a multiplayer demo out by early 2011 and they've already said they have a lot of stuff finished already. They have a very short timetable schedule for themselves to get things released. I imagine they'll come to their senses eventually and realise it takes longer than that. Or they'll surprise us all and keep to the time schedule. We'll see.

I think it'd make sense for them to release it in episodes, simply to get feedback and to keep motivated by responses, but on the other hand they could be like "ok everyone we've got an episode out, pat yourselves on the back and let's take a well deserved break" and the break goes a little bit longer than expected...

IMO, if they can put it out fast, it will lack quality. I just can't believe that these guys can be so much better than Black Messa guys.

Haven't they always said that they want to have a small MP test release first? Surely they could manage a 1-3 level test release in early 2011.

This is extremely amusing. They've barely done anything and it's already podcast time. That is very exemplary of everything I've seen from this project, it's all talk so far.

They have made some nice art though. It's not all talk. If the rest of the team is even half as talented as the guy that made those sketches, the project might actually be good.

True. Black Mesa have had 6 years to prove themselves. And they've shown quality work. These guys have only been around a month?

Just had a look at the sketches, the Ripper and Shrink Gun look much more similar to each other in design (especially with the top-loading mechanism) than their Duke 3D counterparts. I know that all the weapons having a similar design would be more realistic if they're all EDF weapons but idk...

Drawings take hours, not months, and are hardly beneficial to the progress of a project.

Yeah, concept art barely helps the game developing process at all. I don't really understand why it's still a part of professional game design standards.

I liked how in the old games the concept art was vastly superior to the actual game art, much like the box art.

Although mind you only a UDK mod that actually has a playable demo etc can win the ultimate award which is a trip to the UDK headquarters etc.
So that counts this out because a few screen shots don't cut it.

Quick everyone get over there and vote for this mod!!!!!

If they release a multiplayer demo they better fucking release the source code, I thought the project was going to be good, but it looks like a big waste of time, but at the very least it may be salvageable if they release the source. It's not really a source, I know, it's just the files or whatever associated with UDK. They probably won't, so I don't know why I'm wasting my fingers right now.

They won't release anything to the public! The beta test is just for the In-Crowd. Also, why wait? If you are interested making your own stuff, don't wait for them, go join other modders (Unreal, Halflife, Doom etc), eduke32, Duke Plus and so on, they are all here, and are now. AMC is doing maps for Duke, and so on. Just a thought. I wish Duke Nukum - Reloaded all the best, but I'm not waiting and hoping for anything.

So... You actually think that a team of devs are going to be able to make a game in a director's vision, just by being told what they should do?
Just out of curiosity, are you that dumb for real or are you just acting?

I think he was making an ironic joke that failed because we're on the internet. It's self implied that concept art is the soul and starting point for any project.

From an inside standpoint it's useful, but as far as content for the general player? It's fucking useless. Concept art is only useful for a developer, and even then it might not even be. Look at all the concept art for Duke3D that's been released, how much of that made it into the game? Point is, these people have jack shit to show at this point and need to cool it on the hype until they got some concrete materials to show. And you might argue "LOL, bUT IT'S NICE TO SE WHERE THAYRE GOING WIT THIS, LOL.?" Yeah, and you'd make a good point if this wasn't a remake of a game that's pretty simple to run with.

Don't generalize. What is a general player? Where do you come up with this shit? If you don't care to see concept art or art in general and maybe you know a few other people that don't either, that doesn't mean that everybody hates or finds concept art useless...
Concept art shown to the public is something that some game studios do when they are in the alpha stages with a game and can't show the actual game due to obvious reasons.
In the mod community however, showing your concept art for your project is a general and natural thing to do. Almost every mod on moddb.com shows it's concept art first.
Depending on the artist's skill, style and idea of his work, concept art can be anything from ugly, boring to interesting and very good looking.
I've been working on a few TC mods for doom3 in the past and I do happen to know a thing or two about this since I have firsthand experience.
Good concept art can give a very good idea about the direction, style and ambient that will inspire the dev team as long as the game will be in production.
In Duke Nukem Reloaded's case, the concept art happens to be well done and it manages to show us the direction at which they aim.

If the concept would have suggested a much lamer art direction, maybe people would have lost interest from day 1.
After seeing that concept art, I am motivated to see how their 3D modelers and mappers will manage to replicate that concept art into unreal engine 3.

Also, it's not that easy to remake an old and very well known fps game that has legendary elements that make it stand out in the crowd.
They don't just aim to remake duke 3d in high res textues + 3d models. Their goal is to make the maps, npc's and weapons from scratch, and use the duke 3d assets as an inspiration.
They want to pretty much achieve the same thing that those Black Mesa source dudes are trying since ages.
The problem here is that it's even harder to remake Duke 3D than it is to remake hl1, because duke 3d is even older than hl1 and the transition to modern looks is even harder to achieve.
Hl1 had much more things in common with toady's fps games than duke 3D has.
At least hl1 is a fully 3d game with textures that are big enough to make their high res reproduction process much easier.
It's much harder to fuck up trying to remake hl1 than it is when you try to remake DN3d simply because DN3D is a sprite based game with low res assets, that manages to deliver through it's ambient more than through it's graphics.
