DNF Demo included with Borderlands GOTY?

User is offline   Honza

I just quote the guy (thunderPIN) from dukenukemforever.com:

Quote

I know a guy that works at EB Games who just updated his Facebook status saying that the Borderlands Game of the Year edition will include the Duke Nukem Forever demo. I asked him where he got this info from and he told me that it came in an info kit for Borderlands GOTY edition that was sent from Gearbox to EB Games / Gamestop locations. Borderlands GOTY edition is set to release on October 12th.

Now I don't have any solid proof of this being 100% true but keep your heads up for more information. If this is in fact true then we will be hearing something very soon.

The big question is - does anyone of you have any contact as Gamestop so it can be verified?

P.S. I opened this topic just to have a backup in case something bad happens at GBX forums so we can freely discuss it.

P.P.S. Bordelands GOTY is coming out on 10th December 2010 12th October 2010 (US notation).

So if this is indeed true and the demo will come just for the people that buy Borderlands GOTY, then this can only mean bad news.
It can mean bad news because:
1. They want to force more people to buy BOREDOMLands
2. They know that the demo sucks and they don't want everybody to get their hands on it(even thought that's stupid, because everybody will torrent it if that's the case, with me being the number one that will torrent it)
I just hope this is not the case, because they will really lose my respect and the respect of many others, if they do that.

Well, I don't know about forcing us to buy Borderlands GOTY edition to get the demo, but it would be super cool if a demo truly is this close to being released. I suspect even if it was bundled with Borderlands GOTY they will probably do a download of the demo anyway. Unless the DNF demo is console only, in which case I'm afraid they can force us to buy the entire Borderlands game (again) to get the demo of DNF :/.

And like Mr.Deviance said, if the demo is shipped with the PC version as well, I'd say by the time Borderlands GOTY officially goes on sale the demo of DNF will probably already be ripped off the disc and will be on a dozen gaming sites and pretty much every torrent site you could name.

Still, would be super awesome and if they actually did put the demo in the same pack, I'd buy it for that...

Raz.
EDIT: I found an interesting follow up post from thunderPIN: http://gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showp...p;postcount=693 - my reading into this suggests that it is not actually included in the pack, but probably something more along the lines of a code for Steam or other download service to get the demo before its public release... So it doesn't say a demo is coming on the 12th, pretty much all it is saying is that a demo is coming soon, assuming what he's saying is true.

No, this is totally like what Konami did with Zone Of The Enders. ZoE was a strange melodramatic mech game that didn't really stand much of a chance of Western sales. So what did Konami do?

Why, they included the demo for the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 2!

Thus, ZoE sold like gangbusters and I imagine BLGOTY will too.

I'll be kind of pissed if that's the only official release of a demo we will ever see if this is true.

But i read once that you shouldn't trust people that work in game stores and claim to have inside scoops on games, i think that is good advice.

I'm not saying that's the case here but if your "inside man" is a cashier at game stop he most likely knows no more then you do.

Doesn't sound like it will actually contain the DNF demo but you'll be given "early access" to the demo when available.
Probably November for people who buy Borderlands. December for those who don't.

Sadly, some employees do spread a bunch of crap just to try and boost their sales or make themselves seem smarter to the customer. Gives the company a really bad rep but I speak to the head office all the time, if I find anything out I'll let you guys know. (I'm meeting the district manager this Tuesday)

It's also very unlikely that the demo will only be available with the GOTY edition, I think you guys would be surprised at how few people are actually aware of how Xbox Live/PSN works on your machine so while it's a very "sneaky corporate-y" thing to do, they'll still be getting one heck of a game and a demo with it.

That's possible but as soon as its out you know the DNF demo will be on every torrent website in the world unless they have a way to secure it from such a thing.

Nobody is capable of protecting it, the best they do is to postpone it for several minuutes, hours, days...

If anyone was capable of such thing he would be multi-multi bilionare.

Hmmm, well, on the iPhone it's technically possible since people usually attempt to get a decrypted binary by connecting a tiny 'debugger' to the actual running application to dump it in unencrypted form. If you made the app crash as soon as a debugger connected to it, technically people couldn't dump the unencrypted code, and therefore you couldn't actually pirate the game.

I have not heard of anyone actually doing that, though there have been instances where people check the encryption headers and if they're missing, it refuses to run. Of course, it's not all that hard to bypass if you know what you're doing... But if you could prevent people from dumping the binary to begin with, piracy wouldn't be possible. That also happens to be what a lot of the optical disc-based protections do... It wraps the encrypted executable and unencrypts them into memory if the check passes. This is where pirates usually come into the picture and dumps the unencrypted executable code back to a file.

Ummm, was that off topic? The long and the short of it is, it's not actually impossible if the platform makes it so, on the iPhone, you could actually do it... In fact, the approach was discussed in the Oolong engine mailgroups not too long ago. Unfortunately the PC is one of those platforms where you simply have too many tools available at your disposal to actually prevent it.

I can't comment about the demo getting released with borderlands GOTY edition but I saw Randy at work today and he said they had only just picked up the project and so to expect the demo next year.

Lol. The demo was already at PAX month ago. Probably the same demo will be in GOTY Borderlands on Oct. 12.

now, this makes me mad... I bought borderlands a few weeks ago before the big news dropped (it was on sale) I've been playing it on and off since then, I really don't like it that much. Its repetitive, hard to look at, and the gameplay is sluggish, so now I have to spend 50 bucks to get a game I already have, probably lose my save game info and have to start over again just so I can get into this club??? might as well sell membership to the club exclusively for ten bucks less, I'd buy that ;)

I'm playing on Steam, so I probably will.

Does anyone remember that sale? this is a swift kick in the balls, the game itself was like seven bucks, and every DLC was only like three or something, I didn't get them all because I didn't know if I'd like it, so instead of spending about twenty bucks to get the whole package a couple weeks ago on Steam, now I'll be paying fifty for all of it....

...Gay

you know what? I'm Duke's fan, not GearBox's fan, so I'm gonna just wait until its torrentable five minutes after the "EXCLUSIVE, VIP ZOMG UR AWESOMER THAN EVERYONE ELSE" version is released.

eff GearBox

They will release it eventually for everyone. Besides, I suspect with PC release we could get this demo even earlier... ;)

Snap! Sorry. ;)
Well, I'm totally in love with Borderlands. Still play it and love it to death. Depending on how the cover will look, I'll buy this one to compliment my regular edition, or I'll just trade in my old one and get this one to replace it, even though I bought and played all the original DLC packs when they came out.

Borderlands GOTY won't have the demo inside. It will only provide you with an early access "code" or something. The disc itself won't have the demo in it.

It'll be what - a day or two earlier than everybody else? Bah, who cares?! This is just more publisher double-dipping bullshit.

I don't even own Borderlands, and won't buy it under this promotion just out of spite. I'll wait a day or two for the demo, and then a few months for GOTY Borderlands to be $10 if I choose to buy it.

Read the news carefully. You don't get the DNF demo immediately upon buying Borderlands GOTY. You get a unique access key that will allow you to get an early release of the demo at an undetermined date before the full game comes out. And it probably won't even be that much earlier than the full public release of the demo.

Yeah that is sun staring at you in the face obvious, but you still get earliest possible admittance to the Duke Nukem Forever playable demo which for a historical times like we live in is good enough to tell your kids when they are older. Also don't forget about the and more.
