Windows 7 woes

When I try to run mapster or eduke32 on my Windows 7 OS i get an error message saying "unsupported openGL driver detected". Mapster closes, when I run eDuke it just uses the duke.grp files, none of the HRP files, etc.

Is it maybe possibly just running in 8-bit mode because it can't enable OpenGL for the Polymost or Polymer modes (which are the only renderers the HRP works in)?

I think that's exactly what's going on... which is weird, considering my computer is brand new and has a way better graphics card than my old one (which the game ran fine on) had. Any idea of how to fix the probleM?

After reading over the Massive amount of Information in your post my shotgun approach says update your drivers.

Edited for clarity.

No, you apparently haven't. :/

Well maybe someone could direct me in the proper direction? I guess my OS is lying to me when it says the drivers are up to date and there are no updates available...

for a place that you would consider being a good resource of help & information, everyone seems to have an elitist mentality here and seems "bothered" that another member needs help. Humble.

I think people just have an expectation that you know what you're doing and have tried reasonable things before asking for help. In your case, you're relying on Windows to provide you with a driver, which is pretty much exactly what you don't want to do if you plan on playing games. Head over to the site of whoever made your video card and install the driver they give you there.

Sorry for going over the top a bit, dudes. Well, after doing as TX suggested it turns out HP really F'd me. The video card is a "custom installed" video card (it's an intel) that can't be updated... It's weird, I can play games with higher requirements than Duke with no problem, but when it comes to the OpenGL there's absolutely NO support for this video driver. Looks like a new graphics card it is. F-U HP

How did they fuck you over? Have you asked? Have they ever mentioned they'd put in a dedicated graphics card rather an an onboard intel thing?

You can't blame HP for "fucking you over" if you didn't bother to look for information on what you're buying, dude.

True, BUT- you figured they'd give you something with a little more support... Like they used to do. Oh well, it's not really my gaming pc anyways, figured it'd just be convieniant to have my work available to me while I'm using it.

When you're buying hardware, never take anything for granted

Exactly.

And, Mike, Intel Chips should support OpenGL, get the up-to-date drivers directly from Intel's site, don't rely on the shit that comes pre-packaged, or through Windows Update, as those are commonly out-of-date.

Just because you have an integrated video card doesn't mean you HAVE to go through HP to get it upgraded.

Go directly to the manufacturers web site (i.e. Nvidia, ATI, etc)

I did. It checked my system and said that the manu. installed a "custom video card" or something, even though it's an Intel Card, there's like a dead end behind. Can't find updates anywhere... Which is weird, because my ZDoom and Doom 64 Absolution use OPENGL and it says that it's working... very odd.. Oh well, I'm back on the old PC now, no worries.

So stop trying to have the web sites and automatic updaters do your work for you. Download the latest driver for your video card and do a forced install.

So I guess when I said there are NO updates for the driver, it didn't make sense.

Get devcon, then make a list of all devices and pastebin it.

Then, open up your case and physically look for your GPU. Tell us what it says.

No. what didn't make sense is you keep explaining that you let the web sites check your comp for you, instead of you actually figuring out what kind of card you have and physically searching for and downloading the latest drivers yourself. But hey, do what you want. Good luck.

it's an intel media accelerator. Apparently they were made as on "on board chip set" graphics card so the manufacturer could save money without having to install a separate card. To run games with HD graphics (which I suppose eDuke HRP would fall under) I'd have to add-on a dedicated graphics card. Thanks for the help, all.

Yeah, there are all kinds of GL drivers available for onboard Intel video. You just have to look.

Onboard graphics chips aren't rare. In fact, they're rather plentiful. Your situation is not as unheard of as you're making it out to be. And there are drivers. There are always drivers.
