Just to make it clear (as I'm sure there will be questions), VP has worked on "ion" games and phantom is 3DR/slipgate internal team.
Aftershock is completely it's own thing and remains under active development by VP :)

Looks kind of neat, but I guess its just Ion Fury in true 3D with a probably inferior team behind it? Just going by the way it looks, it has a weird combination of '00s graphics with some very '90s textures in places. It seems quite strange.

Why inferior? Looks pretty good to me. The visual fidelity/graphical style reminds me of Graven. Seen it in a few other titles as well.

At this point though I'm not rooting for another game that stays in early access for years. I'll believe it when I actually play it.

Well, I don't think I've played Graven or anything else the new team developed, but Ion Fury was the best FPS we've gotten in a long time and I don't quite think this will live up to that.

I don't know how far along game dev is but its possible some of the pixelated model skins and environmental textures are placeholders. Even if they aren't I would likely stop noticing part way into the game if its enjoyable enough. I'm guilty of mixing styles like that in my projects so I can't crow too loudly. ;)

I'm getting a strong DNF 2001 vibe from the trailer. Is it just me?

I’m getting the customary Slipgate vibe. Excellent hype but everlasting Early Access status ‘please buy it anyway’ on Steam, see Wrath and Graven.
Thanks Oasis. You saved me a lot of time to follow this.

Yeeeeeeeeeah. I'm no so sure I actually trust Slipgate to deliver the goods. So far with Graven and Wrath they have shown to be unable to deliver. And this comes from someone who bought those early access. So far the only quality product I have bought from them is Ghostrunner, and I'm not so sure how much of that was Slipgate.

It's not just you. I've noticed it too and I fucking hate it. I wouldn't be bitching about this if Neo-3DR didn't previously silence discussion of the 2001 leak on their Discord server. But since they did, and are now doing some shit in a futile attempt to appeal to an audience they fucking alienated, it's horrid on many levels. There's absolutely no excuse for this.

I was gonna say the same thing - at the risk of sounding blasphemous

I hope they turn out good, cause if they shit the bed they’ll tarnish not one but two franchises

This, at this point 3D Realms just had so many examples of "we do things that indicate the opposite of what we did previously" that I just can't stomach any more of it. Why are they trying to appeal to people like us who were interested in the DNF 2001 leaks? No, go away, I hate your company since the leak, I'm not interested and I wouldn't buy any of your games anyway. I can't be your target audience, customer-publisher relationships don't work this way.

But even if you don't count the pandering towards DNF 2001 fans then this is a sequel to Ion Fury and guess how they marketed that game just a few years ago. From the Steam page:

Quote

3D Realms, creators of Duke Nukem 3D, Prey, and Max Payne, are excited to team up with Voidpoint to bring back the legendary Build Engine, famously known for classic first-person shooters like Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, and Blood. Ion Fury is the real deal!

Quote

The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, and Blood.
Experience the original BUILD engine on steroids, pumped up and ready to rock again after 20 years!

From and old interview with Scott Miller:

Quote

Our goal was to give current-day players a taste of 90’s old-school gaming. So rather than take a modern engine like Unity or Unreal and try to make it come across as old-school, we decided to use a true old-school engine! It’s really that simple! And since our 3D Realms was known for our Build engine in the 90’s, it just made total sense for us to bring it back 20 years later and see what is was capable of doing. And it turns out, it can still do a LOT!

So IF is the "real deal", a game based around an engine from the 90s, it doesn't only mimic a retro aesthetic in order to look retro, it is an actual retro game. And now we get a sequel that's running on UE4? So this game isn't the "real deal" then? They just told me that IF was better because it took the extra effort to use old tech so Phantom Fury should use EDuke32 too or Unreal 1 if it's the retro 3D sequel that DNF 2001 would have been to Duke 3D. Anything else feels lazy and lacks effort.

And yeah I'll just ignore that a Danish company that's completely unrelated to Apogee, the original 3D Realms, Remedy and Human Head Studios casually refers to itself as the creators of Duke 3D, Prey and Max Payne because they happened to buy a logo. Why don't they just refer to themselves as the creators of ROTT 2013 and Bombshell because that's what they are, this is a third rate shovelware company posing as a group of industry veterans for years now and every single game Slipgate is developing is just a collection of stolen ideas from somewhere else.

So long story short I'm done paying any attention to "3D Realms" from now on, there is a limit to how much you can lie to me and how many "marketing lies" I'm willing to let you get away with. This is just a completely immoral way to do business and it's something grifters and snakeoil salesmen do.

It's safe to assume they banned discussion of it to avoid triggering another lawsuit. Like for example, in case someone part of 3DRealms let something unwise slip in the chat.

I wish they could stop making references to the old games so hard. I mean, it's cool, but come on, not in every title.

A bit disappointed, as I thought it was the new Aftershock trailer.

I quite liked the trailer, here's hoping this one doesn't end up in eternal early access development hell.

This is why I shake my head at people who think Duke Nukem "belongs" with 3DR and they want nu3DR to make a new Duke game or "finish" DNF2001.

It looks derivative as fuck. I smell Fred.

Yeah, the trailer is basically cut like the DNF 2001 trailer, without the sweeping epic music or sense of urgency.

And doing this while also having Aftershock on the way seems ill advised.

Also RE: Nobody should finish DNF 2001. Anyone who tries is an asshole, and smells.

Originally they wanted to reveal this at Realms Deep 2021, so it was hardly created as a result of the DNF 2001 leak. Indeed it appears to be based on the Motherflakker prototype they demonstrated in March 2020 (and which predates that): https://www.google.c...vP6bkJCJr4Yhu22

I don't think anyone was saying it was a result of the leak. The trailer is very clearly aping the 2001 trailer. Like undeniably, obviously, clearly doing so.

The development team had access to the DNF 2001 build way before it was leaked to the public though, surely they must have taken a good look at it...

Yes, absolutely but for example Grinman Gore was talking about appealing to an audience they had alienated by banning discussions of the leak (In order to prevent themselves from getting into legal problems and/or a PR disaster, how dare they!!!!). That could be interpreted as them taking advantage of the leak related PR and creating this just because of the leak, which is just not the case. It is not hypocritical to ban discussions of the leak and then announce a game that has been in development since way before the leak.

All that aside, I am looking forward to this. It beeing very closely "inspired" by DNF2001 is in my book only a good thing, not a bad thing. But to each his own, I suppose.

I have long wanted a Duke substitute and specifically a DNF2001 substitute. I have often thought about the idea of the community creating an new IP and game as close to Duke and DNF2001 as copyright law will allow. This seems like it is the closest we will get.

I am following the work of the DNF2001 leak community with great interest, but whatever they release will be illegal and inherently risky. This will not receive a C&D from Gearbox, Epic or Take Two. Plus it has 3DR veterans like Chuck Jones working on it as an added bonus.

So... this is basically Ion Fury 2, but this time in "true" 3D and with Blade from SiN? Will this be the SiN sequel we always wanted, but never got (until now)?

It's Bombshell 2.

But, but... it's a retro shooter, not a third-person action title. Story-wise it's definitely a Bombshell PREQUEL since Shelly apparently gets her robotic arm here. It basically fills the gap between Ion Fury and Bombshell, at least that's what I get from the trailer.

It's not Bombshell 2 and It's not Ion Fury 2, however it is part of the same universe.

Confirmed by Fred on twitter.
Haven't touched the game so I don't know beyond that either, but judging by the trailer it already has more "bombshell" than we had.

We took so many liberties with Ion Fury compared to Bombshell and it's lore and ignored practically anything that was asked of/built/planned in the end so I wouldn't be surprised if some of it simply gets retconned even.
