So, about that Lord of the Rings show from Amazon...

So the trailer for the new show just dropped on the super bowl or whatever you gringos watch as entertainment today.

Why the fuck does this looks like a trailer for a generic trash fantasy adventure rpg?

Why?

EDIT: It's nice to see I'm not the only one who hates this. The comments in the youtube video (at least as of 13/02/2022 at 20:53) are getting brigaded the fuck out. I see spanish, english, cyrilic and even fucking arabic in there. Inb4 the channel's admin nukes the comments to hell and back.

Jeez, do I even want to watch the trailer? I mean the teaser looked okay, but the small amount of info we've heard about it so far has not sounded promising at all.

Because what they really wanted was to create their own knockoff fantasy show. A 'diverse' splicing of Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings. They just slapped on the LOTR title with some bare bones lore for the brand recognition.

Odd, I heard it is planned to have sex scenes. Its one of the things people have been complaining about, the thought of GOT raunchiness being spliced into a Lord of the Rings series.

The cast is so ugly I don't think anyone wants to see them having sex.

The 20 mentally ill twitter users Hollywood is convinced are the voice of the public do :P
Well okay, maybe they don't want to watch it so much as they want to boast tweet about how #stunning&brave it is, but you get the idea...

I have to admit I'm experiencing some culture war impotence on this one. I'm trying to give a fuck one way or another but I just can't.

Yeah, it's pretty expected they'd have black dwarves/elves or whatever (which they apparently do). I'm not even a fan of LOTR. If you still have hope that things will not turn out terrible, you're naive as hell.

I care a lot about it. First contact with LOTR was in early elementary school and I read those books until they literally broke into pieces (in spanish of course, I would not read it in their native english until later on 6th grade). The only book that I know as well as the Legendarium is probably the Bible.

I thought the teaser was good with a cursory glance. It doesn't matter if its good or bad. I don't subscribe to Amazon so I won't be able to watch it.

wait until you find out, "gay elves" does not mean "happy elves"

the real fun begins when the actors, writers, and production/director crew start tweeting about how the show isn't for straight white men, or how much they 'feel' what they are doing is how tolkien really wanted to portray his realm (because they are subject matter experts now)

Well, it's not like Jackson films didn't start the whole trend. Legolas was as gay as any character in the 2000s in a major flick could get without explicitly saying they're gay and the sexual tension between Frodo and Sam throughout all of the 3 films could almost be considered an opening to a elaborate plot gay porn :D
Spoiler

the books say different - even sam got married to the woman he had a crush on

but we'll set that aside for a moment and address what was on the silver screen.

anything 'implied' or 'suspected' was exactly that. Like you post - they never came out; shoved it in your face, paraded it around like it was a badge of honor, demanded that you accept it otherwise you're a homophobe if you disagree with the 're-imagining' of the characters.
If those movie characters were gay, then they behaved organically and natural, and I'm fine with that.

As for the show, dark elves and dark dwarves weren't in tolkien lore, afaik.
Elves were fair skinned and dwarves were pale. (also female dwarves have beards and are proud of them)

The show is just a diversity check box. The writers are also most likely of the diversity check box variety.
The story might be good, but I suspect they're going to shove things in your face and demand you 'tolerate' it. Or else.

I know this is a meme that I have also used to annoy other people in the past. However I never got the feeling that they were gay. It's as if people have forgotten that men can have close friendships and brotherhoods and any type of intimacy between two of them is instantly gay. Like the Supernatural tumbler fans that pass the time making incestuous homoerotic fanfiction of two literal brothers.

Same with women. Nobody can have any type of affectionate moment with someone of the same sex lest they be labeled as a homosexual or at least accused of having a bisexual inclination.

It's sad.

My wife loves the series and she fucking hates when I make gay jokes about the characters. I like to do Gandalf's voice and pretend he's trying to molest one of the hobbits. "You know Frodo, wizard's get very lonely..."

Amazon's TROP is going to be garbage and we already know it craps all over Tolkien's long established rich lore and history. They've got beardless BLACK dwarves. Black elves. They've got Hobbits when there aren't supposed to be any, Galadriel is wearing armour and leading an army which is completely out of character....aggh. None of this works. Tolkien went to great lengths to be expressly specific about the various races and cultures. They're just shoving stuff into this without any thought whatsoever. "Hey we should make a black elf!" "Dude that's so good! We're so progressive!" Not even going to touch this one with a 10 foot pole. LOTR is just a trophy for Bezos.

Supposedly in the appendixes it is mentioned that Galadriel fought against the house of Feanor in the first kinslaying (at least AFAIK, someone correct me if I'm wrong) but I don't believe it is explicitly said that Galadriel was directly involved in the fight. It was a collective we type of thing. Tbf to the warrior Galadriel idea she is a pretty bad ass sorceress/magic user in the Legendarium so they could have gone that route if they wanted to show Galadriel fighting. But God forbid a female character in 2022 that isn't a action hero.

Anyways here is an interesting take (at least somewhat) on the Amazon LOTR situation and about the ongoing sell of the movie and game rights of LOTR.

Well you see being an all powerful arch-mage was too feminine. And femininity is only acceptable in men. So Galadriel had to be downgraded to just another sword swinging oaf.

Somehow this teaser reminded me of the "Cats" trailer, I dunno. It felt cheesy and weird. Well, we all know how that movie turned out, so it doesn't quite bode well for the series...

I can't. I have been conditioned by years of a lack of (good) LOTR content. I will have to install some type of automatic electric shock machine on my body and pavlov the hell out of my monkey brain.

At this point Hollywood uses fan-hate to create sales through people who want to deny there is a culture war.

I can't help myself, I'm like a battered wife.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power – Why Fandom Has To Embrace Change - Intransigent and reactionary fandom is nothing new, but some responses to the Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power trailer show how damaged the culture has become.

As a side note, when are they going to let gamergate die? I swear gamergate "created" more nazis at this point than nazism itself

It's just First World Problems. Things are going too well. People need to feel like there's a battle to fight so they make up a controversy. We need to be "the worst we've ever been" so that they can feel like they're fighting for a noble cause and are better than everyone else.

I suppose in an indirect manner the whole original gamergate debacle technically ended up drastically changing my views on politics and the mainstream media. Watching the media spin a completely one-sided narrative, and in many cases flat out lie, about a topic I had deep understanding of led to me starting to notice them pulling the same dirty tricks when reporting on other more important world issues. The one pulled thread that unraveled the entire tapestry so to speak.

So I guess I'm not surprised they still hold a grudge towards gamergate, being their reckless attack of it exposed their true colors to a lot of people. Trying to blame everyone else for shooting themselves in the foot.
