Problems with Mobile Intel Onboard Graphics  "Eduke32 Crashes"

User is offline   Paul B

#1

Using the latest build of Eduke32 and running the latest Intel UHD video drivers for my laptop Eduke32 Crashes on loading. However, if I connect an external monitor to my HDMI port EDuke uses the Nvidia GTX 1600 graphics controller and all is well it works. I have gone into the Nvidia Control panel and specified that Eduke32 and the Debug Eduke32.exe should only use the Nvidia Graphics driver and it still crashes as long as I'm using the onboard laptop display.

Below is a snippet of the crash:

There is a way to force Windows to use a certain GPU while executing a program.

Go to Windows 10 settings --->System---->Display

Scroll to the bottom and select Graphic settings:

A windows like this should appear:

Attached Image: Screenshot_12.jpg

From the drop down window select Desktop App then click on browse.

Search for the eduke32 executable, select it then click "Add".

You'll see eduke32 will appear on the list below. Click on it and a couple of boxes should appear. Select "Options" . If you have a High performance GPU you should select the High Performance option and click on "Save"

And thats it. Eduke32 should use the Nvidia GPU.

There is a way to force Windows to use a certain GPU while executing a program.

Go to Windows 10 settings --->System---->Display

Scroll to the bottom and select Graphic settings:

Huh. Weird. Could it be something related to a read permission? Gonna post this on the Discord to give it more visibility as well.

I don't believe so, Intel Graphics works as good as it can in everything else. Game runs correctly when I switch to HDMI port. Kind of rules out file system permissions which should also effect the Nvidia HDMI graphics and it doesn't. Honestly, I starting to think the problem just may lay in the fact that Windows 10 is a forever beta POS.

You know what you could be right about this. I am running the Eduke32.Debug version of the game as it is the only way I can run Eduke32 on Windows 10 with the Windows 10 ATP antivirus. My system blocks the Eduke32.exe from running but it works with the Eduke32.debug version. I wonder if this has something to do with it? It is just strange that I experience no problems when I switch to the HDMI port where it uses the Nvidia GPU. Just wanted to add this bit of information that I felt I left out inadvertently.

Thanks for your help.

When you get the issue with the debug exe, does a dialog box come up with the options Quit, Ignore, Continue? The continue or ignore options may allow you to skip past any exceptions in the graphics driver. I added this feature to the backtrace DLL after experiencing something similar with NVIDIA Optimus several years ago.

Yes, at first I'm presented with Quit \ Continue \ Ignore buttons which I can't select with the mouse only the keyboard arrows. If I don't select anything the entire screen goes black with no cursor or mouse control. There is an icon of a circular spinning ring during this time. If If I attempt to ALT Tab out of it the screen the screen goes solid white. After alt tabbing a few more times and repeatedly clicking the mouse buttons I am presented with an Eduke32 has stopped responding message . Which asks end process or wait for the program to respond. Choosing any of the three options during the start of the problem Quit -> Continue or Ignore does not changes the process in anyway. The result is always the same. When Windows presents me with the option to End the process it takes me back to a functional windows desktop.
