Nearly ten years later and Games Urinalists still won't admit that DNF had shitty gameplay.

Game journalists these days tend to be quite uninterested in gameplay generally.

Also, he writes:

It is honestly tragic how big of a failure Duke Nukem Forever was when it arrived. It wasn't heavily criticized for its combat, story, or graphical fidelity.

Uh, yes, it was, for all of the above. Probably even more than the "character".

People are now so fucking focused to talk about graphics, frequency, refresh rate and every single improvement of just 1 stupid framerate per second, that if you ask what is gameplay they may reply "details".
Looks like they need something like interactive movies with lots of blabling and drama-thriller atmosphere, living a slow adventure with a stupid VR (possibly), instead to have the emotion to play frantic games without input-lag shit.

Sorry if i sound harshy, i can't really stand looking at the destruction of real games, or at least what videogames were supposed to be...

Yes of course, but what else ?

Everyone would be happy with an Atomic-tier new episode. Once again, something that feels solid. World Tour could have been this, if they didn't become lazy with the level design in certain areas, introduced a half assed new enemy, and made the laziest ever take at a final boss.

A new episode with a new gun and enemy+new final boss is a much more realistic goal than a brand new Duke game. All you need is that it is good and feels like a polished product and not rushed.

They've got to bring a new game to market. One that, above all, dosent suck. Nobody can, or should keep releasing the same game for two decades.

Well, we all know that isn't going to happen.

In it's stead, I'd get a professional writer to come up with a scenario for a new episode for Duke3D. I'd contract voidpoint to make the levels and sprites.
That would keep the suckage to a minimum.

I expect a whole lot of nothing so I won't be disappointed.

Yes of course, but actually what I was refering to was one of the other reccuring demands when it comes to Duke Nukem (asside from a new Duke Nukem game of course) : to feature/include Duke Nukem in his own Borderlands 3 DLC or even better : making him a playable character in Borderlands 3... I am a bit dubbious, but I assume Duke Nukem in the Borderlands universe would look sensibly less like a dog in a bowling alley than he was in Bulletstorm (although it is more fun to play him instead of the original character in Bulletstorm)

I don't see any point in the original developers releasing anything new at this time - they made the 20th Anniversary World Tour, which was a decent continuation and tribute to the classic style of original episodes, of course with it's flaws (crappy boss, duh). Still, the stuff community has been releasing for years is by far superior to a new developer's episode - mostly because it's done out of pure passion - so why would I care with the amount of awesome maps and mods coming every year?

Another thing is, whatever they would release wouldn't please everyone, let alone the diehard fans, who already have envisioned much more complex and elaborate games than any company would ever think to release. Take Duke Forever for example - I personally loved the game and everything about it, but as I see most people weren't happy with it. And after seeing the early 2000 trailers of course the fans expectations could have been for something quite different, but still, it's impossible to please everyone. Same thing with new Star Wars - it seems whatever they do is wrong, whether its a full fan service complete with ball tickling and swallowing (Han Solo movie) or going for unexpected plot twists completely against the old fashioned plot dynamics (The Last Jedi).

It wasn't just fans having unrealistic expectations – the DNF we got had been heavily cut back in terms of ambition from what it once wanted to be. In pretty much every area.
I liked much of it too, but in the end it truly was a lesser game – and not just in terms of polish – than what they set out to make and (as a followup to Duke 3D) should have been.

Oh come on, the new Star Wars movies are soulless corporate junkfood trash. Making "art" isn't a technical process, it's not a matter of how much % fan service or plot twists you put in. There is no recipe.

DNF is in the top 3 of overhyped games with Alien Colonial Marines and Daikatana, and indeed even if the game we got is fun enough we all feel there is something missing to make the link with DN3D.

Star Wars without Georges Lucas isn't Star Wars (no matter the amount of love put in it), Georges Lucas have an inimitable style and there is no word to describe how betrayed he feel at this very moment !

Nope. Nope. Sooooo much nooooooooope!

Why would you want that?! Why would anyone want that?! Borderlands is fucking neutered as it is. The writers fucked the story to kingdom come and you want those same writers to make a Duke Nukem DLC for BL3?!

No.

I admit I am a bit confused on this, as far as I played the series I saw nothing wrong, both universes are just as irreverant, but the humor of Borderlands is way too trash for Duke's humor for sure... but however even if it happened I have no reason to get too carried away, I mean, after having played Borderlands 2 VR and Borderlands GOTY Enhanced I took a great resolution : as of now only playing Borderlands games in VR, so its not like I would see it before a consequent amount of time...

But this demand tend to become insistant, so one day you might very well awake with Borderlands devs saying "If you insist..."

Borderlands humour is not irreverent humour. It is internet "edgy" humour that has already ran stale by the time the games come out. What's that? Claptrap is an friendless bastard robot that likes dubstep?! Mister Hammerlock is GAY!!!??? Oh look, Handsome Jack is an asshole rich guy that made a unicron out of fuckin diamonds with a cringy name! How funny and edgy lololololol!

I swear every time I play borderlands and I pay attention to the plot I feel my IQ dropping by the dozen. The only redeemable aspect of the game is the gameplay with is good in some ways in SP and MP is fun.

The humour in duke nukem 3d does not compare in any way to the thrash humour borderlands presents. Thats not saying that Duke Nukem is a fucking masterpiece in writing and doesn't have outdated references but it's still better than Borderlands. Even Leisure Suit Larry is better than Borderlands.

Also again, the story of the Borderlands games is thrash. Having had the opportunity to play B3 to the end I can definitely say it was a thrash story. I swear if I ever meet the writers for that travesty I'll spit them in the face. They did so many characters dirty and the ending was so fucking cringy.

No I don't want to see a Duke Nukem DLC in Borderlands. If Duke's character was already fucked up in DNF it will be dragged through the sewers in Borderlands.

And the Mandolorian was such a sleeper hit because the corporate people didn't care about it in any way. The people who actually cared about making some kind of art were in control, not the people who cared about making a product.

The problem with DNF was it was 50% art, 50% crunch.

The irreverent humor is mostly bound to the characters you control when they throw their punchlines, although the variety of these punchlines rather reminds the Chosen's punchlines in Blood 2 actually (except there is much more variety in Borderlands punchlines in every single game that there were in Blood 2)...
When it comes to the Handsome/Awfull Jack, peoples are not done with speculating on his case : "Big Bastard or just misunderstood", the Pre-sequel have developed his character further and shown his human side that disappeared by degrees.

Actually the story of Borderlands games is not trash when it comes to Borderlands 1, 2 and Pre-sequel... but Borderlands 3 is not very well written (from what I could gather) compared to the previous one indeed, but the game has actually been developed by Gearbox Quebec, and with the final Borderland 2 DLC "Commander Lilith and the fight for sanctuary" its their very first creation, so maybe we could give them the benefit of the doubt and be indulgent... but yet again who really mind about the plot ? Just as John Carmack said : "Plot in a FPS is like plot in a porn"

The only way they could consider putting Duke in a Borderlands DLC (if ever) would/could only by involving Tryptich Games for sure, they already were involved in the "Captain Scarlet" and "Sir Hamerlock" DLCs in Borderlands 2 (they where the bests out of the 4 DLCs released for Borderlands 2 in term of writting and conception)... but I can understand your relunctance in including him in Borderlands 3 considering he would be the only character standing on his feet (but I wouldn't say that he would be the guy this game desperately need though).

The best possibility would be (for me) a Sigil type release by Allen Blum, but it won't happen. Nobody managed to get in contact with the guy sadly.

I would also love to see guys like Romero or Russell Meakim involved. Their Doom maps are wonderful, what can they do with Build?

I even would love to see a community episode in the style of the original, and maybe guest mapping by Blum and co. Levelord is easily reachable btw.

If Duke fit poorly into Bulletstorm, it would be even worse with Borderlands. Sure, both games contain elements of comedy, but it's not at all the same kind of comedy.

Holy shit. No offense that is the worst take I have ever seeing about the Borderlands series. Ever.

First off the "irreverent humour" is not bound to the characters you control. Your characters are practically mute except when they throw their little combat blurbs. The ones throwing the garbage "jokes" and internet memes are practically every other NPC.

Second every Borderlands fan is freaking enamored with Handsome Jack and think it is brilliant writing. Newsflash he isn't. He is a generic villain for all of Borderlands 2 whose only saving grace was that by the time you saw him you really wanted to kill him if only because he is so fucking annoying. You think he killing Roland or Mordecai's bird was smart. Thats writing one o one. They had more death flags than a Final Destination Protagonist.

Third. Borderlands 1 barely had a story and was bland as fuck. Borderlands 2 was the meats and bones of the series and it is at best ok. Just ok. And the pre sequel? The pre sequel was mediocre in it trying to justify Jack becoming evil IMO. The less of Borderlands 3 the better. That thing is full of plotholes and retconnes. Also just because Carmack said "Plot in a FPS is like plot in a porn" doesn't make it applicable to every FPS game ever. If you are going to write a script, record lines, make cutscenes and basically spend all that money making a story for your game for it not to matter at all then you are a shitty game developer. Perhaps in the 90s and early 2000s that flies but now a days when everything has to be "cinematic"? Fuck off.

And finally really? The best DLC in your opinion are Sir Hammerlock and Captain Scarlet? Did you even played Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon's Keep?

Look man I like Borderlands. Really I do. I have 184 hours clocked in Borderlands 2 (probably more on Switch and PS4) and 82 hours in Borderlands 1, about 80 in the pre sequel. And even I know that it is the equivalent of garbage food.

So could you please stop with this lets add Duke Nukem to Borderlands? Let Duke die with whatever dignity he has left. Please.

The most disturbing to me is the raiders lines in Borderlands 2 (especially the psychos, they are like viruses in your head...

For sure Jack is the guy to shoot, and everything he do comfort you in this perspective, but give back to Cesar whatever belongs to Cesar : he is at least one step above any other vilains in the Borderlands Universe

Borderlands 1 may have rudimentary gameplay and story (compared to what came after) and quickly become borring (the environement trend desert-desert-desert doesn't help) but at least had strong atmosphere, Pre-sequel was improving upon Borderlands 2 settings. Borderlands follow its own rules in scripting, voice acting and cutscenes, so why comparing ?
And what about Tales of Borderlands made by the talented team of Tell Tale Games (now defunct sadly) ?

I didn't say Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon's Keep was bad, it is great too, it just was 100% work of Gearbox, no other devs was involved in it, its so good actually they just anounced a board game based on it !

I could say that have the feeling that you don't really like Borderlands and just that you play it by constraint, but I rather think you are just pushing the reflexion too far and the game doesn't beg for it as it wasn't meant to be intellectual or expert FPS, as I have 163 hours or Borderlands 1 GOTY Enhanced and 1083 on Borderlands 2 VR (but that might be because I am such a perfectionist) and for the others I only wait them to be released in VR as it is 100 times better for singleplayer experience.

The idea of adding Duke Nukem in Borderlands isn't from me, I just report it, I don't even hold my breath on it and let alone wish it ! And letting him die is out of question, I only wish him to evolve in the good way !

Sorry to disappoint you but : 1.Gearbox could hardly care more about the Duke as they are always here to support him when many others are missing 2.Replacing John St John is out of question as he is the only Duke Nukem, he have the talent and the skill and impersonate him at the perfection 3.There is nothing wrong in DNF except gameplay with no proper identity, the game isn't bad, just dated (would have probably met success in 2006) !

Don't worry my friend, Gearbox is working on it right now, but as Randy Pitchford stated lately he have learned never to talk about anything isn't ready to be talked about or in other words before anything solid can be showed, it apply either to Duke Nukem, Brothers in Arms or any other project Gearbox in either working on or simply publishing whatsoever !
