I think what got killed DNF was lack of overall vision or passion in end of its development. I feel like iteration we finally got is perfect example of game design by checklist.
Dont believe me? Lets see:

- Long walking non combat interactive introduction (Half-Life)? - Check!
- Obvious contemporary CoD gameplay sensibilties? - Check!
- Forced vehicle passages (Half-Life 2)? - Check!
- Gimmicky "puzzles" and interactives? - Check!

What I find most absurd is that in contrary to its long development, it somehow feels almost "copypasted" in its bland and sometimes overly prolonged themes (casino anyone?)

It has its charm, namely the multiplayer. It's enjoyable.

The Doctor Who Cloned Me is actually pretty entertaining, still has its flaws.

In the main game, the level set in Duke Burger is reminiscent of classic Duke, in my opinion.

Nah, I just spent so long trying to find something good about the game that I actually did.

That was actually a response to Musically Inspired. You posted 2 minutes before me.

But to respond to you, there are actually a lot of great games I haven't played yet, including Deus Ex, Half Life, Bioshock, etc. That's why DNF is no where in the queue.

There's no reason to play DNF

or Half Life for that matter.

I think I got up to level 9 or something. It's boring.

I like it a lot. I have 1,288 hours on steam since 2016 and mostly been playing multiplayer during that time. I'm still finding new ways to play multiplayer matches of how the maps are laid out. Duke is slow with no recoil but they compensated with its map designs. It still pisses me off how much potential the game had. But don't blame Gearbox for it, blame 3DR and for their how-many-years of development hell Duke had to endure.

Absolutely, Gearbox didn't make it worst than it already was, they only improved upon what was, according to Randy Pitchford, the worst mess he ever saw, interesting pieces of gameplay but with no spine whatsoever

Gearbox had no involvement with the development of the game.

Your posts suck and are always filled with misinfo.

I just mean that you don't get to steal all our valour by just chummin' up with us and saying "yeah, that game sucks what a piece of garbage" without feeling the pain firsthand. You wanna be a brother in arms then take up those arms, dog.

I'm tired.

You're dead wrong, stop being the pot calling the kettle black please !

The involvement of Gearbox was limited in time (the dying months of the developement) but still there, working with Tryptich guys (ex 3D Realms) who were working on the single player, and Pirahna games on the multiplayer

And to that I will add Civvie11 quote : "It was roughfully mismanaged from the start, it was a small team trying to get the most epic game ever" , even Scott Miller have realised back in 2003 they would never reach the end, that their company was just not big enough to pull this up... he just didn't speak loud enough or wasn't listened, who knows ?
And I don't mention the fact that 3D Realms was working with a mentality of the mid 90s...

No. Gearbox outsourced everything, they devoted 0 of their developers to the game. They were more of an executive producer than a developer.

You're dead wrong again, Gearbox not only gave its money, time and energy, they also hired 10 to 20 peoples to help the small team of Tryptich who where located in the same building !

There is only the truth that hurts !
Gearbox make good games, they are just misunderstood and underated !
If you insist on finding bad video games, look for Capstones games (esoecially "Operation bodycount" and "Tekwar")

TekWar was at least ambitious.

Capstone devs never knew what they were doing, ending everytimes in a big mess (even Civvie11 say so, and on Tekwar he almost lost his mental health)
but as Civvie also said, having good devs knowing what they do but having constrains of time or money (or else) or being too ambitious to get the intended results is equaly disasterous (Daikatana among other)

I don't know about you, but I feel perfectly able to make up my own mind about a game without asking your guru for permission first.

Come on, you can make your own opinion and enjoy a game, and realise the game is far from being a masterpiece ! why do you think I have enjoyed Daikatana while Civvie didn't ?
Or simply Duke Nukem Forever ?

Then why even bring him up as some kind of authority?
Obviously TekWar is "far from being a masterpiece", but it is ambitious, and it is quite interesting though in a failed way.

And William Shatner also gushed over Capstone for that for a moment, but now if you mention it on his tweeter, he will block you... do any writer ever loved an adaptation made of a book he wrote ?
I could play it myself, after all I have nothing to loose...

Battleborn was also ambitious, not bad, just misunderstood and didn't find its public... or MOBA are overcrowded, or FPS and MOBA doesn't fit... who knows ?

tbh i really like duke nukem forever. the weapons are beefy (most satisfying shotgun ever ngl imo) the locations are varied and interesting and overall it's just solid. it's a solid game with a lot of variety. i do a yearly playthrough ngl

I still don't understand why everyone flipped out over The Hive. It was no different to me than everything from Lunar Apocalypse, just in better graphics.
