What are you working on for Duke right now?  "Post about whatever Duke related stuff you're doing"

Ok, I really rushed the last one and It wasn't really demonstrating the 80s retro sci-fi look I was hoping for.

So with that, here is version 2, will be painting extra details on after.

The backsides of switches should be left empty to help hiding them by 180° rotation (even though the outlines are still visible in Polymer).

It's always good to make HRP stuff more robust against crazy user map uses.
One not-so-crazy use is 3D sprite art in non/prior to HRP maps. To maintain compatibility it is necessary that the outline (and size/offset) of models match exactly their ART counterpart. Which does not apply to many switches and the Polymer hand dryer for example, due to their rounded edges. And this new keycard switch doesn't match this requirement either, unfortunately.

On a separate note, can I ask again if there is any actress that you guys think would make a good base for the standard Duke babe? Think body shape and face structure. There is a reason I'm asking this.
Stripper - Sarah Connor aka Linda Hamilton
Slimebabes - Ripley aka Sigourney Weaver, what else...

Really there should be a better way to make buttons invisible but still working and since we already use maphacks maybe wouldn't be that hard to implement.

If a sprite's cstat has the "one-sided" flag in the map, then it should only be rendered from one side. If models are rendered regardless of the flag, then that is a shortcoming of the rendering implementation. If the flag is not set on the sprite in the map, then that is something that could be added in with a map hack.

I'm not eager to review a thousand levels just because new models break twenty years of mapping practice.

I tend to agree with Spiker and DT on this one: hiding stuff by angoff (or even mdx/y/zoff + pitch/roll) is a hack that I believe I can make unnecessary with a proper "hide" token with application of the one-sided bit to models.

I agree that should a new HRP boom take off, it's important that the art maintain quantitative accuracy. I believe accuracy and artistic license are not mutually exclusive.

If you keep compatibility with as many user maps as possible, you broaden the HRP's base that much more. A multiplier, if you will.

IIRC, Gillian Anderson is another. That may have changed.

How are you intending that a model made of polygons exactly matches an outline composed of pixels?

You have a point: we haven't had a way to compare models to art tiles as we can with textures. The closest would be loading them into Mapster and toggling r_models on and off. Maybe there should be a similar console command to debug model animations by stopping each ART frame at an interpolated point along the defined sequence.

I'm not sure why the whole HRP purity argument is coming into this, I am purposefully posting here and not in the HRP thread because I have no intention of releasing new stuff for the HRP. Probably Ever.

I am making these models for me, and how I would like to improve the game for myself.

I am happy to release my stuff for other people to enjoy / use in their own mods but I'm not getting involved in the HRP again and the politics that surround it.

My stuff from this point can be classed as standalone like any other mod that isn't the HRP.

The hooker. Not changed. Nice choice. Once you know you can't unsee.

Comment on a few purists who liked to get mad each time the HRP is mentioned outside its native threads.

There is a lot of hate for the HRP on Duke4, even though I've been told "I imagined it".

Where? Where is this hate? There isn't any. Some people don't like it and you guys take it personally for some reason. I already went over why some people dislike it in another thread here, it's a fan made modification and some people just don't like how the visuals look. When you keep posting things like "well SOME people have a hate boner for the HRP" it just looks so petty and disrespectful to people. I like the original game's graphics, I respect the work you and the rest of the HRP team have done but when you keep trying to victimize the project it's really irritating. Some people can't play without it and love it, why can't you be happy with that?

Hate is a little strong. More like disdain or dislike. I think part of it stems from the fact that so many times in the submission or discussion of the HRP content you get people saying "no, it doesn't look enough like the original sprite" or a million other nitpicks sometimes from people who don't like the HRP to begin with and will never use it. The responses are seldom "in your face" but many posts over the years have been subtle shots at the modernization. Branching off to a new next gen community will lead nowhere so the frustration of having to limit ourselves in our content creations to personal mods only can be a little frustrating.

This is not the thread for this discussion so I'll shut up on the subject here.

You've summed it up to a T, with a full stop at the end, and with a John Hancock-esque flourish.

Do you know how much I hate the terms "hate" or "hater" and how grossly, ridiculously, excessively these terms are used? Not only is it an overused term, but it's often associated with actions that can get people thrown into jail.

Find some other way to label your critics than to use that tired, tired refrain of "hater".

Edit: I'm waiting for some smartass to comment on the irony of me saying that I hate the term "hate".

Probably one of the coolest boss ever. Well is a mini boss.
Is similar to a boss in Super Metroid (SNES)

Boss I made is somekind of half serpentine dragon half electric eel.

Only mini boss that I will show (PARTIAL) not all the battle.

Thanks!

After seeing veterans like CK3D, Quakis and Maarten releasing new quality maps, I just couldn't stay behind. :)

I always had some ideas in the back of my mind for a city map.
I don't want to show too much yet but there will be some crazy stuff in this level.

EDIT: looks neat and creepy Zaxtor!

It's true that with people like Zaxt, Merlijn, Marteen and such back in action we'll have to brace ourselves for some more meltdowns and ass-kicking along with "eye-kicking" if I may say so !

BTW Zaxt what's the music we hear at the beginning of your video ?
It intrigues me just like that Turican track from the one where you showcased the devastartor re-fill ^^

The music of the level is the underwater level in Super Turrican 2.
Soundtrack is called Submerged

Devastator refilling things shown was in Level 10.
PS Soundtrack of Level 10 is Walker Factory of Turrican the original video game soundtrack

Seeing Jblade's cool new water effects video for AMC3 reminded me of the animated water texture I have waiting for a place to put it. With the help of TeaMonster this water texture was modeled in Blender and he exported 40 frames of normal maps which I added to the main tile and animated for a really cool look. I wish I had a video capture program to really show this off, but a still pic will have to do. It works great as a standard water texture and as a transparent TROR water effect.
