Noob Help for Eduke "How do i use User Maps in Eduke?"
#1 Posted 01 June 2009 - 08:35 PM
to using WinXP and Eduke. Ive d/l the new HRP and installed only the Eduke
part.
Ive looked in the Eduke info and cannot figure out where and how
to install user maps. I was unable to open the MSHelp file in Eduke. It
keeps saying it is corrupted. I tentatively unzipped one user map into the Autoload
folder and it worked properly. Id sure like to find some detailed info on this
subject. Will user maps that have their own .con files be able to be played thru Eduke this
way? Id noticed that some user maps have many art files, etc. Im lost
in this new port. Can one just drop the zipped map levels into *place*
or will they need to be unzipped?
Also, im curious about the DukeRoch installer, and its possibilities for running
Shadow Warrior maps and TC's. TIA.

Thank you both for the info! Duke looks great in GL mode; i cant wait to replay some levels. I did alot of reading last nite, but still have one question.
For levels that arent in a .grp, but have different .con, .art, etc. files...how do i load those? Must they be put in a .grp format to work? Or can i just dump them (unzipped) into my usermaps folder, one level at a time, like i did with the original Setup for Duke? Then delete them?
(I guess that was more than one question) TIA

if you have the map in one of your usermap-folders and a zip (no rar) of the same name in the same folder, you can choose the map in PlayDuke and on Gamestart it will load the content of the zipfile.
e.g. blahblah_1a.map
and blahblah_1a.zip
This should work and load all the artfiles and soundfiles and cons.
Otherwise you would have to create a .bat-file, but don't ask me about that

Thank you. I cannot get PlayDuke working, even after doin everything you said to do. The best
i can get, is for the map name to appear in the Maps window.
With Eduke, how do i load up levels that have their own art, con, music, etc. files? How can i preserve the original .con files without overwriting them? TIA.

Open Playduke.ini
There must be something that says "Duke3dw.exe"
Replace it with eduke32.exe
Sorry 'bout that!

Thank you, Chicken! I figured out the .ini and it started the game. I began to test the limits of Playduke by putting in a few levels with music and art and .con files. I had to rename dethtoll outside of the Maps folder, then the music ran properly for each level.
However, i noticed when i ran Bedrone, which has its own .bat files and stuff, that i had some odd lookn art in there, that didnt belong. I went to Map folder and deleted everything but Bedrone.map and Bedrone.zip and still had some odd art, but not as much. Am i correct, in that, one needs to only load one level with extra files at a time? Or was the problem that it had its own .bat files and should have maybe been ran as a TC? TIA.

bedgame.con
beduser.con
beddefs.con
Then you rename them to game.con, user.con, defs.con.
and put them back into the zipfile.
Then the included sounds will play (called up by the new user.con) and those weird B's will disappear.
This is the most convenient way to play the level i think.
If you use the .bat you would have to copy the entire content of the zip into your main duke folder (duh), the bat would rename your original cons to make backups and then rename them back when you quit the game and...
I suggest you use the above method.
Getting levels or TCs to run with playduke sometimes demands a little tinkering around with the con-names but it makes handling and organizing much easier once it runs.

Glad i could help

Im having a bit of a problem with figuring out how to play maps and tc's in Playduke with .bat files present. I know how to use the Playduke .ini to make sure .con and .grp files are named correctly.
Also i was wondering, if i cannot get a TC to play, if i could use KEXTRACT to get the .maps out to play them. I have WinXP. TIA.

If a TC has a bat file you can edit it so the TC can be run using EDuke32. Right click on the bat file, go to edit and change duke3d.exe to eduke32.exe, save, close then click on the bat file. This will usually work. If this does not work let us know.

I should have mentioned starting with a new/empty folder, adding the Duke3D files, the EDuke32 files then the TC files. (Overwrite files when you add the TC files if necessary). Also click on yes to use the internal defaults if asked. By the way what TC are you trying to play?

Im tryin to play ADG, version 1.0. I installed Eduke by using the HRP installer, and not installing DukePlus. This is my first attempt at trying out Duke on WinXP. I knew how to manually work around these problems on Win95, but im kinda lost on XP here!
So, i start with a new/empty folder. I could just copy the folder that HRP created, named Duke3d , that was there when it was new, right? Or are you saying that i may have corrupted files in there from playing levels, and tcs?

Yeah, when I have a problem I start over with a new empty folder. I will install ADG right now and see what happens. I will let you know in a few minutes how I make out.
Edit: Your right. Something strange is going on with the adg.con file. It will not work for me either when I edited the bat file for eduke32. I wrote another bat file and still had the same problems. I would skip this mod for now and try installing another one to see how you make out.

Thank you so much for your help! Ill find one with a .bat file and do as you instructed. I alter the .bat file to read EDuke32.exe, then i rezip it into the tc. At that point, can i just start PlayDUke normally? I know you said to click on the .bat, but im not sure how to do that. Do i open the zipped tc and click on it there? Or should i leave it unzipped in the game folder and click on it there? TIA.

You can either launch the game in 8bit mode or remove (cut & paste) the HRP zip out of the autoload folder and put it on the desktop or something and put it back when you are done and finally you can turn off the High res options in the video settings options in game.
