Should they keep the Austin Powers-style humor for the next Duke game?

I don't really get the hype for Serious Duke – it doesn't really feel like Duke at all, not gameplay-wise, not atmosphere-wise; it feels like a Serious Sam 3 mod. It also looks and sounds kinda shit. Unless there's been some huge improvements since I played it last... I'd rather play DNF.

It's because people are starved for Duke Nukem. Anything will do. That's why people are excited for Half Life Alyx even though VR is just...meh. If you find head swiveling fun...good for you. For most, they want a real game not based on a gimmick. John Carmack left VR for a reason. It's tech isn't advancing fast enough for his liking. And if someone like John Carmack abandons a tech, you know its not a good thing.

I just don't see how it can possibly scratch that itch. There's not a lot Duke about it. HL:A on the other hand actually looks very interesting and not particularly gimmicky.

As for Duke's humor – what was it that was so funny about Duke in the first place?
– The oneliners? They were never really that funny.
– References? They were mostly hidden, either in secret areas or hidden in plain sight in the text on posters and such.
– "Funny scenes", like the alien on the toilet. Sure, but they were few and far between.
The comedy elements in original Duke 3D were pretty sparse really.

I think the humor really started with the spin offs. The sight gags became more frequent, Duke's lines got more humorous, and the enemies got a bit more cartoony. Because they came after Duke 3D, people began associating that with Duke in general, add that to the joke of DNF's prolonged development period, and it became the norm to think of Duke as funny. Then DNF came out and... well... juvenile humor, thus continuing this constant war between those of us who know Duke wasn't supposed to be that funny, and those who think he's the next Austin Powers.

Yeah, DNF tried too much to be funny, and failed miserably most of the time.
