XP Trying to get Duke it Out in DC - Please Help!

#1

I'm sure others have had my same issues, but I recently became a duke convert with the xbla version. I then picked up the pc version off of GOG and managed to get the HRP working. It looks amazing!

The problem is that I also picked up Duke it out in DC, and I've spent about a billion google searches trying to get the damned thing to work. I know i apparently have to unpack the ssi, but the unpackssi application on jonof's website won't work for me. I also downloaded the HRP pack for DC but have thus far been unable to get ANY part of it working.

Any help?

You'll have to say more than something "won't work" for you. What errors are you getting with unpackssi?

If I try to open the unpack app it just pops up with that black DOS screen and then disappears before I can read what it says. I tried to use DOSBOX to get it open but that just came back with other nasty messages. I also tried DOSBOX on the install.exe file and managed to get to the part where it asks for my Duke Nukem 3d folder but it can never find it.

I even found on one of the duke fansites an automatic installer that included the unpack app. It worked fine until it tried to unpack the ssi files and then came back with a could not find unpack message.

I've been getting the generic 200 error message, but I think that's the standard XP problem.

Thanks for the help, I've heard such great things about all the expansion packs and can't wait to get them working in whatever capacity I can.

I more or less converted my old instructions of how to make the add-ons run with eDuke32/JonoF port into a PDF-document, it's attached below. I think the last steps are a tad outdated since eDuke32 recognizes .GRP-file at boot up. Any suggestions are welcome.

Duke It Out in DC (for Atomic Edition)

This small patch will convert DUKEDCPP.SSI to DUKEDC.GRP

Unpack the zip to where you have DUKEDCPP.SSI and run patch.bat

The DUKEDCPP.SSI must have md5: F0BFA5B956C8E3DBCBA1042118C1F456

Download:
http://www.mediafire...php?grkdglhwnry

Duke Caribbean Vacation (for Atomic Edition)

This small patch will convert VACA15.SSI to VACATION.GRP

Unpack the zip to where you have VACA15.SSI and run patch.bat

The VACA15.SSI must have md5: 22C8CD6235FC2B7ECEFEFC2442570D68

Download:
http://www.mediafire...php?ljduvmtmzlm

Attention: Before applying the patches delete old DUKEDC.GRP or VACATION.GRP, if they exist. For example you tried with other methods to convert the SSI files to GRP, but the result was unusable.

It was about time that someone did something about this problem. I cannot believe that no one created such patches. These patches do not violate any rules or laws, as they need the original files to work. And only someone who bought the original TCs will have the files, at least if you want to be legit. Duke Nukem 3D was one of the games that worth the money that I paid to get it at that time.

Wow, you guys are quick with this stuff. :P

So I used that patch and now i have the dukedc.grp file but eduke doesn't seem to recognize it. Since I'm on XP I can't go through the usual duke3d.exe icon since that doesn't work to begin with.

I have a feeling I'm missing something really, really dumb here.

To play Duke it Out in DC or Duke Caribbean Vacation you also need DUKE3D.GRP to be present in the same folder as eduke32.exe, dukedc.grp and vacation.grp

Currently Duke3d.grp is sitting right next to dukedc.grp in my Duke2d directory. I have two other folders, autoload and DOSBOX. Should DC be showing up as the "custom game directory" or another whole new "game" at the eduke32 start screen?

put eduke32.exe, duke3d.grp and dukedc.grp in the same folder

run with: eduke32 -gdukedc.grp

I think the problem is in .CON's, i modified this files to make DNDC in eduke32 work whit and whitout DC HRP, try it:

Attached File  DCcons.zip (42.06K)
Number of downloads: 816

And try to use a .BAT whit this parametries " Eduke32.exe /xDCGAME.CON

No, there is no problem with the con files

You just have to use: eduke32 -gdukedc.grp

Anyway, I have attached dukedc.bat to do it automatically

Attached File(s)

  • Attached File  dukedc.zip (254bytes)
    Number of downloads: 788

Duke it Out in DC uses the same GAME.CON and DEFS.CON from the ATOMIC EDITION DUKE3D.GRP, but it has its own USER.CON. You don't have to do any modifications to the CON files. Just play with the bat file that I posted, or run eduke32 -gdukedc.grp. You don't need anything else.

And yes the produced dukedc.grp is fully working

Hey look, it worked! The .bat file allowed me to load up Duke Nukem 3d and then I went to usermaps and could play through any of the DC levels. The only odd thing is that for some reason the sky above the white house is orange, but I could honestly care less about that.

Now it appears that all of the enemies are looking like their HRP versions; how would I get the HRP pack for DC to work? If it's absurdly complicated (I think the instructions mentioned keeping the hrp file in it's .zip format, which doesn't sound right) then forget about it. :P

I'm sorry to be such a complete and utter novice when it comes to this stuff. Years ago I used to play Star wars dark forces and used similar .bat tricks to get user maps playing. Unfortunately that was a long time ago and all the added stuff with trying to get it working on XP is beyond my knowledge.

The original DUKE3D.GRP file from the retail Atomic Edition CD has MD5: 22B6938FE767E5CC57D1FE13080CD522

If your DUKE3D.GRP file has different MD5 checksum, then you don't have the original file.

put:
dukedc.bat
eduke32.exe
duke3d.grp
dukedc.grp

in the same folder and run dukedc.bat
One of the episodes will be the Duke It Out In DC.

You don't need anything else

You want to play with HRP? Put in the \autoload\ folder the files:
duke3d_hrp.zip
xdukedc_hrp.zip
eduke32_mus.zip

It is very simple. Why are you confused?

Aha! Yeah, I'm an idiot. I kept on unzipping the files isntead of just leaving them as is. Duke in DC works perfectly now, HRP and all! It's odd, I get the new menu with the Presidential Seal, but it still won't show up as a new episode. Regardless, I'm able to go into user maps and load the levels that way, so I think I'm good. Thanks again.

Just out of curiousity, is the caribbean and christmas mods worth hunting down as well?

I never said anything bad about you, sorry if you misunderstood me.

Either way, now it works for you, thus enjoy gaming

You can do something else move xdukedc_hrp.zip from autoload folder and put it to where eduke32.exe is

Then edit with notepad the dukedc.bat and change the line from:
eduke32 -gdukedc.grp
to
eduke32 -gdukedc.grp -gxdukedc_hrp.zip

As for Duke Caribbean Vacation and Nuclear Winter, I like them better than the Duke it Out in DC.

off topic: Can somebody who has the Dukein Dc installer send me a PM. I'll send you a beta version of DOSBox in order to find why it doesn't install in DOSBox. (while there are other ways on installing it, I just don't like broken games in DOSBox :P )

Duke It Out In D.C. Patch

http://www.sunstorm....ads_dcpatch.htm

If you are having problems installing 'Duke it out in D.C.' this patch may be the solution. The 'Duke it out in D.C.' 'install.exe' and 'gamer.exe' files have some Pentium II or faster processor compatibility problems. If you are getting the message "Runtime Error 200" then this procedure will step you through updating your files to a version which works properly.

Follow these steps to successfully install and patch 'Duke it out in D.C.':

1. Copy the ENTIRE 'Duke it out in D.C.' CD-ROM including subdirectories into a temporary directory on your hard drive.
2. Copy the files included in this patch into the temporary directory that you made which contains the copy of the 'Duke it out in D.C.' CD-ROM; Copy install.exe into the temporary directory ; Copy gamer.exe into the /dukedc directory UNDER the temporary directory. Allow these new files to overwrite the old files.
3. Now you may run the 'install.exe' program from the temporary directory to install and setup 'Duke it out in D.C.

I have attached the patch into this post:

Speaking of patches, here is an add-on by WallyWaffles that makes some of the sprites interactive and adds some extra stuff.

@spitman, if you have the retail CD then the VACA15.SSI is there. Do a search on your CD.

Hey SuperGoofy, I have the same problem as the other duke it out in dc guy. But I just have one question. How exactly do you get the dukedc.bat? I have the duke it out in dc cd and all of the other files in the directory needed for a nonHRP duke. Do you get the dukedc.bat from the patch?
