DNF 90% Complete Goalposts Shift to 2002 Build  "3DR wants to release it, but it's up to Gearbox"

Yeah, there's definitely a lot more here than "a few test maps".

I absolutely love the motorcycle sequences in this game, especially "Born to the wild". I love how holding down the gear up button and releasing it after a few seconds allows you to do a wheelie (even for a prolonged amount of time if you accelerate while doing one).

I'll leave you with this:

  • DNF 2001
  • Crosire's Direct3D 8 to Direct3D 9 wrapper
  • ReShade
  • SuperDepth3D.fx shader

Result: DNF 2001 in STEREOSCOPIC 3D!!!

As I already posted in the wrong thread, the art style is fascinating here. Even if the maps are unfinished, the base art here can be used for a great game (and I can even see some textures in 3D). Wieder and Blum must be recruited to finish off the stuff, but even if they won't react, a pretty good game can be done from the assets. And I still love Slick Willy.

How do you accelerate past 25 mph?

Holy SHIT!

Kaiser! You son of a bitch! How ya been man?

RE: The authenticity of the footage. Everything that was leaked last year, and some of the stuff I saw prior to that, and what I was told by certain people, led me to believe that none of the streamed content had sound. No sound at all. Either because Fred didn't stream sound, or because whoever did the screen grabbing didn't capture the sound. In either case, listening to the audio on those rather high quality clips makes it seem pretty "straight from the source" to me.

I get a feeling we will likely see this dumped. For how long remains to be seen. Some of the reactions from developers are telling. It's much as I suspected. They don't give a flying fuck about Duke Nukem anymore.

I am good my friend.
Nice to see all of ya! Cheers

I am surprised. everything from E3 trailer is there as separate short scenes/maps. But some of these stuff from e3 trailers is also live in levels
If someone really wanted, 4k version of that trailer is now possible haha. waiting for it!

The game is so huge. There are so many maps unfinished. No wonder they never finished this verison. It is too big. So many idea

Just keep hitting gear up (left mouse click).

Scott Miller just made a blog post on 'The Truth about DNF' https://www.apogeeen...vblog/dnf-truth
Didn't know he wasn't part of the Denmark 3D Realms anymore.

I think the wording both Miller and Broussard used over the recent leak make it sound as if we wanted a finished build of the 2001 version of DNF or expect the leak to be a finished game, but we always knew that was never going to be the case. It was always going to be heavily unfinished, and not much of a game to begin with. I'd say 95% of Duke fans are happy to play this and 5% are actually disappointed.

Damn, I have never seen this much activity in this forum since I joined and before I started lurking here. Both on the forums AND the discord.

So nice!

That must be an intentional strawman. When I wrote I wanted to see what was done of Prey in 1998, Joe Siegler never argued against what I had actually said, but always against a strawman argument of a clueless n00b who assumes Prey was complete in 1998.

Scott's a clueless narcissist whose actions are what led to the Gearbox suits/friction that led to us losing 3DR & the Duke IP. Mind blowing the nonsense he spews. Not surprising due to his depth of manipulation and narcissism. Least I've had the class to keep thoughts private. I have *so* much more to say on this having known him since high school in the 70s. You can just see how he uses opportunity to try to make himself look better tossing an ex friend (of 40+ years) and biz partner under a bus. Def a guy you wanna do business with!

Does anyone have a standout map? I love Slick Willy's and the Rooftop battle. The rope's climbing and swinging mechanics feel better than any other UE1 game to me. I also love that you have to select a keycard in your inventory to use it, which gives the game an adventure feel.

Yeah having played it now I don't know why Scott and George are trying to downplay this so much. I'm assuming most people weren't expecting a fully playable game...

What I've played so far, of the bits that are the most "finished", has been quite alright. Love the RPG/Pipebomb. Combat is not very varied but gunplay feels solid. The Lady Killer levels are all playable start to finish (well I only had to noclip once or twice I think). After that it's the occasional decent gameplay moment between empty but good looking levels... Sure the trailer sold this as being a bit more refined than it is as marketing often does but I'm not really disappointed in the leak in the slightest.

My feelings are kinda mixed, I guess. I'm glad that finally we can put many of our collective fantasies and delusions to rest, I'm glad that throughout the leak you can feel this kernel of greatness at many points, but I'm sad that ultimately we didn't get what could have been...

I guess the next chapter in the delusion can be that the powers that be aren't going to take action against this leak and a team of modders will take it upon themselves to increase the playability of what's there a bit more ;-)

I was very surprised by the rope mechanics. When I first saw that there are ropes to climb I instantly thought "oh god no" and then it was just smooth.

My other surprise was the bike: I remember a lot of games having similar vehicle sections and basically all of them had terrible driving if you can even call it that. Here you have to switch gears and it actually resembles something that could be called a driving model.

The game's very broken and unfinished of course, it's not good in that sense (and it reminds me of Blood 2) but if I'm being honest I'm in absolute shock over just how much stuff they had. The texture work and the art style is top notch too and when it's blown up in HD this stuff just holds up better than 99% of the retro shooters that come out these days. It seems like an incredibly bad decision from 3DR to switch over to "Doom 3 lighting" when they had this on their hands, this could have had timeless visuals like how some games from the late pre-dynamic lighting era had (like No One Lives Forever 2 or Undying).

My theory is that this leak is semi-official or at least respectful to the original developers. Pretty clear that somebody spent a long time cleaning these two builds up, making them more stable and fit for wide release. There was no build made to be sent out to people, just active development builds on people's workstations that included personal shit and other things never meant to be distributed. This is a calculated release. Modders: Have fun tinkering. But I would expect that more builds could be coming. Fred and Randy confirmed they exist. These things have touched too many hands, they are bound to leak.

Also, I've said it a few times in the Discord but for posterity, Nick Shaffner is highly unlikely to be the actual leaker. The build was taken from his workstation hard drive, but that's probably the hard drive Fred had. Don't besmirch Shaffner's name with so little evidence, being labeled a leaker is very bad if you're still working in the industry, especially when it's not true.

I'll be honest. I think there's some truth to George's words. I'm not saying he's innocent, far from, but having read a lot of Scott's comments and write-ups in places both related to and completely separated from DNF, I don't think George's words ring completely hollow here, either.

What doesn't "ring completely hollow" about:

1) How did Scott's actions lead 3DRealms to losing the Duke IP, when Scott was not involved with DNF?
2) Who's "us"? George and the voices in his head? I mean, it can't be George and Scott, because Scott is still part of 3DRealms.

Scott isn't part of 3D Realms. He's part of Apogee. They are different companies now.

Daily Reminder: 90s Apogee lost their partnership with id Software because of Scott's bad business practices. (Source: Masters of Doom)

I've just finished blazing through the main campaign of DNF 2001, plus some test and multiplayer maps. All I have to say is, to whomever is behind x0r, thank you. Thank you very much.
Even though I couldn't experience this leaked build the same way most people here did (apparently my videocard is too good for this game <_< ), what I've experienced I will never forget.
I've been hearing from people like Randy and even George that there's not much to these builds. "Barely even started, just test maps, yaddayadda". I say they're wrong.
What we have here is what I was suspecting it to be from the getgo. A clearly unfinished, unpolished mess, that nonetheless has a lot of content; including content I don't recall anyone mention; let alone take pictures. Such as
Spoiler
Besides that, the levels that were promised from the beginning were fun to play in their undercooked status. The bike levels were very fun and I was surprised about how much content the Area 51 levels had.

I had a lot of fun going through these maps and I still stand that, if the devs actually bothered to finish this build, we could've got a game that would easily stand out against the competition (only to be dethroned by Half-Life 2 later, but still). It would sell, it would be well received, the fans would obviously like it and the Duke series would've gotten a longer lifespan outside of its fanbase (with the 2010s zeitgeist inevitably standing against what this series represent).

Hail to the King, baby!!!

1.) Well, I can definitely see Scott being a narcissist, first of all. If you've ever read anything he's ever said about Apogee and the model, he does come off as quite self-absorbed. As for the suits, honestly I'm hoping George'll elaborate. I'm assuming it's something along the lines of something Scott might have done near the end of 3DR's lifespan, which of course would be after George got it there.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm not saying George wasn't the primary one responsible. But I'm not so willing to just write off his accusation because there's usually some reasoning behind them, valid or not. After all, we don't know all the details of what happened.

2.) Isn't Scott completely separate from 3DR now? It's a completely different entity in Denmark and he restarted Apogee. As for who "us" is I'm pretty sure George means 3DR c. 2009. Yeah he's not a part of it now but the context is kind of obvious.

Care to elaborate some? I've never had the book and this is the first I've heard of this.
