DNF 90% Complete Goalposts Shift to 2002 Build  "3DR wants to release it, but it's up to Gearbox"

#1471

just found what looks to be a boss fight with Proton, although unfinished. Pretty interesting though.

Oh the 90% finished but probably wasnt is 100% correct

Its a bit late for me to be trying things, But has anyone tried opening the 2011 version of DNF in the editor? In theory its the same editor right?

The remake of Hollywood Holocaust is cool. I wonder if that was just for kicks in the office or if we would’ve gotten that as a hidden bonus upon completion or something.

Deja Vu is a part of the level order.

Doesn't work for me. I dragged the megapatch contents into the October 26/system folder, but when opening dukeforever.exe it just hangs at a DNF logo and white box and my PC slows to a crawl.

Just had a play around and it's a little surreal going through something we'd only seen briefly or heard snippets about over the years. One of the sections I tried was Lake Mead, and seeing it out for myself after seeing it in the 2001 trailer was a strange feeling. It's pretty rough to be sure from what I've encountered so far, but it's interesting to see what is there, and I'll be curious to go through more of it and explore all the levels later on. Crazy that it's finally happened after so long!

Edit: Randir14 that happened to me the first time, and I don't know if it's because I didn't copy the dnGame.u file and/or edited the DukeForever.ini for resolution/full screen etc. settings, but after making those changes it booted up straight away.

I wonder if this causes GBX to hire modders as a last resort so they can finish the game as "DNF the way 3DR intended" and sell a ready and functional copy of the build for a larger audience before the fans could do so for free. An opportunity like that would be too good to pass up for a ready-made game.

^Should be located under October 26\Players\Duke.

Edit: Settings to change for resolution (set to desired res):

WindowedViewportX=1920
WindowedViewportY=1080
FullscreenViewportX=1920
FullscreenViewportY=1080

Change the below from False to True for better performance:

StartupFullscreen=True

Change the audio from 22050Hz to 44100Hz for higher quality audio:

OutputRate=44100Hz

For setting the FOV (below is the default):

FovAngleDegrees=90.000000

All this taken from the twitter thread here

Managed to find it and get it running, thanks a lot!

Sadly my work break just ended and I'll have to wait for the night before I can test it at home, bummer

Awesome! Credit to brullov in this thread for posting the instructions here and pointing to the original twitter thread. :thumbsup:

Edit: Forgot to post the CacheSizeMegs should be changed to 256 (default was 4) for better performance.

But wasn't that said about a much later build? One from October 2002 IIRC.

If anyone is having trouble running the build, try running the game through the software DxWnd. It's useful for running fullscreen software in a windowed mode and I've had some people on Discord report success launching the game with it.

I don't think that would go well for them in the public eye if they tried. The response to it would be very negative and even worse than the negative response Duke3D: World Tour received. Modders will be releasing fixes for the game for free in no time. The best they could do now is leave it be and leave people alone who want to play around with it. If they do want to fight tooth and nail to stop people from fixing it up, it's going to be amusing to see them put so much effort into it. It's a win-win situation if they remain hands-off. The fans get something to play around with and their relationship with fans slightly improves by allowing it.

Running RTSS in the background prevented the game first from starting at all, and then after changing some settings it started, but when i started walking it crashed again.
Solution: Create a DNF profile in RTSS and set "Application detection level" to "Off". Use your GPU drivers build in framerate limiter for that function.

Also, anyone know Cheats? And what levels are functional?

Haven't nailed down what levels have substantial content yet but Rooftop has a nice short little battle. As for cheats, the console commands most useful are "god", "ghost", and "allammo" which gives you everything. You can also use "summon" with entity names to summon in bad guys and/or weapons/items.

I' ve just booted the game and the menu is all glitched up. Did anyone else have this problem?
How do I fix this?

I've installed all patches and nothing is changing.
Also, lots of in-game models aren't loading.

Been playing for40 minutes. Still in Lady killer Casino. It;s already a bit more than expected and pretty close (but better) compared to 2011 haha
btw- I found a guy with a working flashlight walking around. So hopefully something modders can give to the player. BTW - the dude totally aims the flashlights where you want. Lol I see what they did there
Anyone found a way to enable nightvision ?

Hit F12 by default (you can rebind it in options) to open the console. Cheats are all the standard Unreal 1/UT99 cheat commands, so here are the ones that matter:

god (self explanatory)
ghost (noclip)
allammo (all weapons and inventory)
open mapname (loads any given map. there's tons of them in the maps folder, browse around and have fun)
summon classname (spawn in weapons, monsters etc.)
behindview (chasecam)
playersonly (freeze pretty much everything that isn't you, including monsters and projectiles)
suicide (doctor, it hurts when i do this)

Thanks, works !
Almost an hour to get down to the casino level. About similar to 2011 version but more puzzles.

BTW people - headbob works. You can just enable it in options
Not sure if we are using best graphics possible but it does look like the small clips 2years ago

Were you able to properly interact with the fire alarm terminal? I can trigger the finger movement but cannot solve the puzzle as moving Duke's finger inside the terminal's viewport disables finger movement again.

Anyhow, I have been playing this now for a bit and I must say it does not feel as unfinished as some people claim. The game also has a lot of sequences that feel badass and make you wonder why no other games ever did any of those.

I had to noclip this part. But other than that, everything works. It took me a while to realize you need to use keycard or fuse from your inventory.
And when the nightvision ran out, spawning powercells did not recharge it
edit: I AM AN IDIOT. You recharge nightvision from your inventory

I don't know why I keep reading that this is "like the 2011 version but better." In the most vaguest of deinitions, yes, there are some similar story beats... But the gameplay, even in this rough state, already shows it was going to be a far more fun and inventive experience. To say nothing of the fact that while DNF 2001 takes a couple minutes to get you into any action, DNF 2011 literally takes about a half hour to finally get you to the shooting people in the face part of the experience, and then it layers on top of that numerous sequences that force you to play in specific ways. Turret section, elevator brake minigame, shrunk down, racing, and then at the end of that you get some combat for a minute in an arena, and then you're back to some other gimmick like turrets or something.

DNF 2001 is an amazing breath of fresh air from a bygone era. Even in the rough, unfinished state, you can FEEL just what this game could be if it were polished off and finished up.

So has anyone had luck with the editor? I've made a test map of my own which I can run. But I cant open any of the games maps, which is unusual that build of unreal engine.

I had the exact same problem and in my case it turned out that the game worked just fine (even launched in fullscreen by default) without applying any patches at all; just the default unarchived build. Granted, plenty of bugs, crashes and frame rate drops on my end (as well as weird sprite artifacts in some of the later Morningwood sections) -- but for "archaeological" purposes it works alright. Given that this was apparently slated to come out June at first, I hope there will be future patches.

Yeah, there's definitely a lot more here than "a few test maps".
