DNF 90% Complete Goalposts Shift to 2002 Build  "3DR wants to release it, but it's up to Gearbox"

Do we have a collection of all the "leaked" new screenshots of DNF somewhere yet?

Yes.

Really wish gearbox would just release the build as-is, i'd love to play around with some of this shit

Me too, but I know that it's never gonna happen. Randy knows that as long as there's someone who imagines DNF 2001 as the best game ever without having ever played it, the mystique of the Duke Nukem IP will never drop to zero. "Oh but he said he's working on an agreement with 2K!" People lie.

He really should, it would actually be a perfect chance for him to improve his reputation and get some goodwill for once.

If he did a low key hands off release with the source code and assets, and leave the community to figure out how to get it up and running, it would stop a wider audience from accessing it while finally giving some new Duke related things to work with, broken as may be.

The reputation of DNF 2001 as the best game ever is so insanely high, anything he releases would fall short of it. Anything he releases would only be met with accusations that he held onto the REAL thing and purposefully released some "garbage" to kill the hype. He would get so much flak, his career in the video game industry would be over. Instead, if he never releases anything, that cosmic shitstorm will never happen, his career will continue and the myth of DNF 2001 will never be tarnished.

That would only be met wigh cries of "ZOMG U BROEK IT ON PURPOES!!11!!11" by that "wider audience" who cannot access it. On the other hand, release it for everyone, and everyone will be like "ZOMG THIS ISANT TEH REAL TIHNG U LIAR!!1!!1!

If Randy Pitchfork really thinks what you say, that means we never can trust what he ever said about most things(not just DN related), because he just cares himself only, not the fans of games from his company.

:(

And that would be surprising... how?
Remember how long ago he said the original Duke Nukem games would be back on GOG and Steam? And yet they haven't.

LOL! :( People seem to consistently underestimate just how successful Gearbox is. Whether people like the games they release is irrelevant. Borderlands 2 is the biggest seller in 2K history. Borderlands 3 will be a massive hit. They run a successful publishing division, which includes handling the physical release for Fortnite, the most popular game in the world, and are robust enough to self-finance AA titles like We The Happy Few and a 1v1 arena card game shooter. Outside a hundred or so posters on a few enthusiast boards, I doubt many people are interested in the old Duke Nukem Forever builds anymore - they're like 16-17 years old, unfinished, and niche as fuck! DNF was announced 21 years ago!

If something releases and people get upset and cause a stink, that's a nothing burger for Randy & Gearbox. Even if a critical video or stream went to town on the builds gained some traction and went viral, like clockwork, Randy will appear at a gaming convention, flanked by dorky Gearbox cosplayers (someone will probably be there as that Mushroom thing from Battleborn), to ambiguously hint that his studio is hard at work on something that's obviously Borderlands 3, a disclosure that will generate enough interest and traffic to negate all other stories about the studio's activities in 2018.

I backed We Happy Few on kickstarter, so they had some help.

Edit: Oh and Randy Pitchford can go suck an egg. Aliens Colonial Marines was doo doo and he says its great.

Yeah, but an indie developer signing on with a publisher after running a successful Kickstarter campaign to expand the scope of a game is pretty common, see 505 with Underworld Ascendent and Bloodstained, Deep Silver (THQ Nordic) for Kingdom Come and Shenmue III, etc... Gearbox weren't involved during the KS campaign, they came on board a year later when the game was in Early Access.

Yea I'm aware of that, as I said I backed it on Kickstarter so I was privy to all the updates, including getting a publisher. My point was that they didn't entirely self-finance it. After all they had my money to help :(

meh.

Gbox will release it at some point. Maybe with the next Duke game. This would be pretty smart actually if you think about it:

+ People will buy it because of the 2001 build
+ People will be dissapointed by the 2001 build and see that the new game is actually better (or at least complete)
+ Profit!!

..

nah.. they will never release it :(

Yes, never be surprised.

I guess I will ignore him talking shit(except he actually do something really matter) and continue calling "Shovelware" like forever. :(

It's sad passed so long, just nothing BIG actually happens.

I still don't see why Gearbox doesn't look to that version as inspiration for the next Duke game, considering the final DNF doesn't even resemble it.

"Yeah but look at Doom 3! The lighting in Doom 3 is all real time, and the shadows too! We must have that!" - George Broussard

Truth be told, the idea was to simply port the content to the new renderer and I think it could have worked since it just would have been DNF 2001 just with a shinier visual presentation.
Had Broussard simply either A) scrap the renderer, realizing it's too much wasted money and just finish the game up for release at some point in 03, or B ) stick to what they originally had in mind instead of just randomly scrapping and redoing small parts before eventually changing the entire game upside down (this is based off what fred said of the 03 DNF) and just port the Dec. 02 content to the new renderer and then finish up the game for release at some point in 04, this conversation wouldn't be happening now.
It's just that at some point, Broussard needed to stop being perfectionist and realize he was wasting money like crazy on a product that likely already was a 8/10 or 9/10, or at the very least something decent, and just finish it and release it to the public.
It wasn't the dynamic lights, it was Broussard being a perfectionist and having all the time and money in the world to spend on DNF that killed it.

George should've stopped being a perfectionist in June 1998, which is when he decided to scrap the Quake2 version of DNF and restart from scratch with the Unreal engine. He should've bit the bullet and scrapped the area outside the Hoover Dam (which is the whole reason why DNF did not come out with the Quake2 engine), showing it as a cutscene instead.
The decision to switch to the Unreal engine was the beginning of the end. "Ooh, we must have this too! Ooh, we must have that too!"

Imo, the restart with the unreal engine actually paid off. I mean don't get me wrong, Q2 DNF would probably have been good as well, but I think most people will agree the 01 iteration of DNF was by far the most interesting.
Also, you have to keep in mind that a little over a year of work had been done (no, I do not count the 96 DN3D 2 phase as development. that's conceptual work at best) so the engine swap at this point wasn't as absurd as say, scrapping entire parts of the game that were done or ready to be polished up for retail instead of just porting and updating the assets back in 03 when the new renderer got implemented.

It's all gone quiet. Shame really. Hype explosion followed by heat death.

I'm sure someone on 4chan said that if nothing was done by the end of the year, they were going to leak it. Be interesting to see if that person was full of shit or sat on a goldmine.

I don't believe in any leakers. All those screenshots are from old magazines or screengrabs from Jace hall video. If the leakers were real, the screenshots would not look like a promotional material and be in higher resolution. It's Unreal Engine.

I hate that we see no leaks or news and it's a dead end again and probably for years more... and the stuff is just few gigabytes (at most).
The thought that all builds (and holy grail 2001/2 trailer build) are out there on some old hdd and they mean nothing to the company is just heart breaking. And it's not only DNF. There are so many demos, projects, alphas and betas of many games that never even got announced or were cancelled. It wouldn't hurt to just upload it to torrent or whatever. Nobody is using those engines or assets.
We could have it in a matter of minutes years and years ago. I say we even kinda deserve it.
Why do we always have to wait and these companies take forever to decide on anything. You released the game, give us the beta builds and that't it. There is nothing complicated to it and it would not harm anyone.
It didn't even harm Half life 2 sales and the alpha was leaked before the game released.

The fact that they have something, anything - even what was just in 2001 trailer with nothing behind the camera? It does not matter what it is. Just honestly upload those old hard drives. Corporations, laws and rights. It's ages old at this point.
Either upload it or say for sure "We will finish the last 10% of DNF 2001/2002 and release it as is for 20$ in date xyz". Decisions. We need solid decisions. Not another leaked screenshot that is just taken from some old video or magazine.

"oh I promise You. it's not what You think, there is almost nothing". I mean ok I get it. don't matter

Those new screens are 100% from someone that has the builds or knows someone that does. This shot for example was unseen until it was posted a few months ago with the others:

Now the pixelation suggests it might be from a video but it shows something new from one of those builds.

Just because it's new doesn't mean someone has the build. That's definitely a highly compressed low-res video stream. If he had the build there's no reason why he couldn't take a normal screenshot.

Nope. Scans reflect the lower quality of a printed picture and they are always blurrier than grabbed screenshots. Bonus point if the person scanning them uses a scanner with a high value of DPI that shows all the printed dots in all their glory. Can you point out a magazine which already featured the screenshots you don't believe are leaks?

or screengrabs from Jace hall video.

Nope.

You can see the Jace Hall videos and notice the environments are completely different. Besides, the Jace Hall Show features the post-2006 version.

At the time, the resolution was pretty high.

So crazyflyingdonut said this over at Doomworld:

I was reading this thread and decided to email him about it. He gave me a long explanation full of BS.

I know it's BS because I saw the picture of some guy's hard drive labeled "DukeBackup" filled with files from (mostly) 2001, so I'm not convinced with RP's explanation.
