Questions about AMC cut-scene camera

Hey guys

I recently started playing around with the cut-scene functionality of the AMC TC for my own mod I'm working on. I've got two questions;

1) Is it normal that the camera can only "hear" certain sounds? For instance, I've got a MusicandSFX sprite in an area where the camera is located but it won't play the sound. If I enter this area in 1st-person mode I can hear it just fine. Having said that, there are some sounds that it will play, such as the sound of the sparks from the particle generator.

2) Can a shaky-screen effect be achieved? I've set up the activators to set off a chain of earthquakes, and I can hear the earthquake sound in the background (so I know it has in fact activated) but the camera isn't affected.

Thanks

James will be able to give a more accurate response since he's the coder, but maybe ambient sounds can only be heard from the player directly. You'd think there'd be a work-around of some kind.

At the moment I don't think a shaky screen effect is coded in. The main TC could benefit from such an effect though, and I think James did express some interest in doing it at some point. Assuming James added it, it may be difficult to give you the update if general code changes for episode 3 have diverged too far. However it may just be a simple case of copy and paste.

Ok no prob, I'll see what James has to say. Well regarding a workaround I noticed that I can use the 'cutscene text' sprite to play a sound effect, which I see is how you guys did your voices during the cutscenes. However the sound that I wanted to play was a looping siren sound, so if it only plays once it's kind of pointless.

I'll be interested to hear what James says re: the shaky screen effect on the camera.

Thanks for your input

How long does the cutscene last? You can loop the audio file directly.

For the shaking camera maybe you could kinda trick the camera by temporarily teleporting the player in 1st person view and place it on an invisible platform which would be affected by the quake. And then make the camera use the player's view which is affected by quakes.
In the end it's just using the player's view as the camera itself ...

Perhaps this could do the trick ?

The first question, as Micky said the camera can only hear sounds near it but not ambient effects - I've coded a pseudo work around for the latest episode but you can get around this issue in the current release by moving the player into maybe a hidden area in the section so they can hear everything, then move them back when you're done (There's a move player sprite you can do this with, tile number is 3713) :dukecigar:

Second one, that's not possible with the current release unfortunately - it's one of the things I've sorted out in EP3 though which I know isn't much help at the minute.

No worries; I'll try your workaround for the sound issue, and as for the shaky screen effect I can let that idea go for now. Although out of curiosity, do you expect that the build version you're working on for episode 3 will be backwards compatible with AMC2 maps?

Hmm... only problem I forsee with that approach is that the player's view is static; whereas the camera is panning nicely across the scene. I suppose I could try and put the player on a moving platform to create the same effect? I'll let you know if I give it a try and it works out.

Definitely, when it comes to beta testing time for EP3 I'll be happy to include you in so you can check out your map and see if there's anything that's changed from EP2 to EP3 that you might need to tweak. I can't think of anything off the top of my head but it's not beyond possible.

30 odd seconds I'd say; I haven't dabbled much in sounds and audio so I'm not really sure how to do this yet. Although plan B would have just been to incorporate some of these sound effects into the background music.

I'd be more than happy to do that :dukecigar: ; I'd say that my mod will take at the very least another 5 years and I'm sure there will be some cool extra functionality in AMC TC episode 3.
