Mafia 2 on the other hand is must for me as I loved the first one (even more than GTA). I remember my girlfriend at the time being annoyed with me for completing it when she wasn't there to see the story complete (and she didn't like games). After completing mafia, there were humerous and inspired extra missions, I would have loved to have seen more of these but my skill couldn't get me past the speed mission (some of you may know which one I mean).

I know which mission you mean, and yeah it was hellish. There was good stuff past it though, sorry you never saw it.

Mafia is also one of those top 10 personal game experiences for me.

Hi, you are on the internet. ;)

LOL!!!!

Raziel, I have tried the graphical updates for SS2 a few years ago and I still found it too tricky, although prettier lol. I also found Deus Ex too tricky. I understand that these are games that are worth persevering with, its just I am not geeky enough to find fun in numbers in FPS. What I mean by that is, I play FPS games because I want to kill things on screen, not do mathematics. That was not a put down and I was not calling you a geek by enjoying these games. I love the RPG element in games such as boiling point (broken but great) and STALKER as these add an extra element to just run and gun but I found SS2 and Deus Ex to be too RPG based for me.

I think the reason Bioshock was received so well (overall quality aside) was the original premise, and the excellent, half life matching beginning which was followed up on with gameplay that was thought provoking and mostly fun. I thought some of the character animations were lacking the same polish as the rest of the game. Also hacking never got old, even though it was just a rehash of Pipemania.

Weider - I know you hate consoles, which is a shame, we could've hooked up our xbox's for a game of Mafia 2 (over the internet thing).

Anyway, I suppose its a fair trade off, DNF delayed but another Duke game announced.

I own all three consoles and almost never play on PC anymore. ;) I've got my projector setup so that I'm playing on a 1080p widescreen image that is 6'6" tall. Oh I loves me some of my console play. ;) Girlfriend and I are co-oping through Resident Evil 5 right now (when we're in the same city at least).

Traitor! You betrayed us all! XD

Nah just kidding. Thing is, I wish I could own a console but I am poor, so my PC is everything I have and I am a PC Gamer at heart. I just have a problem with poor ports, thats why I dont like consoles so much because of thier danm sucky and half assed ports.....

Ah cool, I have that for 360. My save game became corrupted twice (after I had completed it) and I had to start again so if you want a hand one day gis a shout (same name but all lower caps).

P.S. I have professional difficulty unlocked so if I host a game and we complete a chapter, you'll have it unlocked too.

I'd love to get a 360. But even if I had the money (which I don't). I would think twice about buying one. I had a group of 5 freinds at the last place I worked who lived on the things and one of them had to return it SEVEN TIMES. I said f*ck that.

I hate the crappy ports as well. I was given Resident Evil 4 by one of the freinds for the PC. There was no mouse support!!! I got GoW as it looked an excellent game. I played it on my freinds 360 and loved it so I got the PC version. Guess what, you can't save your game! You can actually, but then the next time you go to play it, it erases it so you either play the whole thing through from scratch on one sitting or you never finish.

The publisher has known about this for about 6 months now and there is no fix anywere to be seen.

And don't mention Devil May Cry...

If the game publishers want to get rid of PC gamers for the complexity or support issues, then great, just do it. Don't screw around the way they have been. Everyone gets pissed off.

Ports are usually a mixed bag. The PC version of RE4 had no shadows I seem to remember. PC graphics worse than the gamecube. Lame. It was even worse in the old days though. You would wait months for an arcade release for the 8 bits and they were never as good. Even worse than this, different teams or sometimes completely different game studios used to make the games from one platform to another and the difference was massive. Some games were awesome on all platforms though, eg Raid over Moscow & Stunt Car Racer.

Apparently, if you're not connected to the internet when you play and back up your save game profile when you exit then the game for GoW it works.

http://gearsforums.epicgames.com/showthrea...332&page=17

Oh and the 360s tend not to break as often now, so if you get some spare cash then feel confident to get a new one.

I don't remember if it had shadows or not. I think it did, But I can't remember. After about an hour of trying to shoot a courtyard full of zombies with the arrow keys I said 'no more'.

There is a 'mouse aim' patch. Actually two I think. Neither worked.

What really annoyed me is that it looked like a great game. I just wish I could play it.

I tried that fix for GoW and it and it dosen't work.

I've stopped buying PC games due to this.

I've bought and paid for about 7 games in the last couple of years. 3 of them don't work (more if you count the Orange Box that won't work unless you have a broadband connection). At no time did any of the manufacturers ever get a patch out or even appologize. The attitude is "Hey, you should have got an XBox". What the hell kind of attitude is that? So the attitude of game makers is screw me and my money that I spent on them? No, screw them from now on.

I was going to buy UTIII, but the demo BSoD'd on my system. Its the ONLY application, game or utillity EVER to do so. The same week that the demo came out, they went gold. Do you think they actually fixed any of the problems in the demo in that time? Do you think I was going to waste 50 bucks on it just to be told "Ha-ha, you should have got an X-Box"? No I didn't. I saw it recently at $13 and I'm still not going for it.

Being this mech-like big daddy, with his bend-over-and-I'll-shove-my-huge-ass-drill-where-the-sun-don't-shine-arm, totally contradicts that.

I LOL'd when I read that. But yeah, the direction the game is taking seems less than ideal... I do suspect you might be able to choose your role in BioShock 2. If they force you to actually be a big daddy then unfortunately yes, the game probably won't appeal to me. There are semi-confirmed rumors that System Shock 3 is in production though, so that is at least some good news.

That game was awesome....

The best thing for that game is to use a good analog gamepad for the driving and switch back to keyboard mouse when you are on foot. I don't think I could have ever beaten it without switching controls on the fly like that. That speed mission is pretty well impossible if you are using keyboard-mouse controls.

Yeah I was using a mouse and keyboard, I tried it a good few times before I gave up. Has anyone ever played the RPGish FPS I mentioned earlier, Boiling Point?

http://uk.gamespot.c...c/action/xenus/

The reason it only got a 7 out of 10 score is because upon release, the game was broken and needed several patches to fix it. With these applied, fans of STALKER would revel in it. I didn't complete it but it was good while it lasted.

I don't like RPGs, yet I went against my instincts and bought BP because something about it appealed to me. Unfortunately I probably should have listened to my instincts, I haven't gotten very far into it and it has been collecting dust since. *

Seeing how SS2 is my second most favorite game (after SS1), I'm very puzzled that you think SS2 is too RPGish while BP isn't ;) SS2 is as lightweight as you can make the RPG part, without going SS1 style, which I personally prefer since I'm not into RPG but the SS2 stuff was so little that it didn't get too much in my way.

sorry to the OT allergic people here, but the Duke news are slow anyway ;)

Its just a game. Gotta love having to get your flying license before you can fly a plane or helicopter. I recommend you to try it again, get your money's worth! ;)

SS2 was too difficult I found and I wasn't alive long enough to get used the RPG part. That was my main gripe with it. Same with Deus Ex, so I presumed that I was doing something wrong (and wasn't able to get to grips with the RPG elements).

I was going to recommend an ancient game for comparison to maybe help you look past BP's flaws called Hunter for the spectrum but I can't find a link anywhere ;) .

I'm a pretty patient person in general, and don't mind flaws (like smaller bugs or little lack of polish) that much, if I like the gameplay. I was just a little disappointed in that departement, which I guess in turn bred frustration that I needed a truckload of cash, but every little "favor" I did for someone just gave me pocket change, so it felt like I'd have to do 20 jobs just to get the main story to progress a single step. I wouldn't even mind doing all those little things if the gameplay/mechanics would have been less "flat".

I loved the seamless big world, driving (or flying) around though, and I probably missed something where I can do jobs that give me more cash than the insulting tiny amounts they were giving me so far ;)

At some point I'll probably give it another shot since I tend to play through my game til the end, even if I'd find it sucky as even those game can be valuable experience (on what not to do).

See for me, the appeal of SS2 had nothing to do with the RPG part, that was more a necessary evil than anything else... But the game drew me in regardless. BioShock is similar in RPG type design, but doesn't feel anything like SS2 and definitely failed to draw me in before I got bored and uninstalled it (after I thought wow, this game should be really fun, and it just wasn't).

OK you won me over, I'm gonna play SS2 again. I bought it back in the day (was on a very good compilation and had a pink disk) so I'm just torrenting it. Its already half done. The mods are a bitch to install lol.

One of my all time favorite FPS games. A very nice gameplay experience.

If you have a dual core or more, be sure to run the game on only 1 core. Otherwise it might crash VERY frequently, as i've experienced.
(to do this, start the game and alt+tab out of it. then Press ctrl+alt+delete, and then right click the shock2.exe task, click go to process, then right click the corresponding process and sellect set affinity. Uncheck all but one cpu. Good luck!)

It really is a much better game then Bioshock imo. I like SS2's feel and ambience much better. And the moments with shodan and xerxes, and the dramatic voice recorder thingies which Doom 3 kinda ripped off...

The glory of the many! It has so many miracles to share, so much knowledge to give...

not sure if this played any part in making the game too hard for you, but an idea might be to go into the game with the right mindset. It's not run and gun style of play, you don't have to kill everything. If you can avoid confrontation and save ammo then that's a perfectly valid option (whereas in normal shooters it might feel a bit like failing to not kill everything).

Just mentioning it because I remembered a post I read couple of years ago, by someone who didn't enjoy the game much and he tried the guns blazing kill everything approach, which will make you run out of resources quickly and make it hard/frustrating.

Hope you have better luck this time around and get some enjoyment out of it ;)

Thanks, but I'm ashamed to admit I died a lot with only the wrench. I was sure you had to kill those zombie/cyborgs/whatever they are at the beginning. I think I did go with a run and gun style into it but I didn't even get that far ;) . I'll bear it in mind to avoid before shooting (once I figure out these damn mods lol). I'm looking forward to it, I'd be playing it now but I'm not at my house pc.

I'm gonna check out SS1 too, just for shits and giggles.

Skullhacker, there is a file (below) which fixes (among other things) the multicore issues you mentioned.

http://www.strangebe...opic,392.0.html

My PC stays awake at nights dreaming of 64bit and multicore (amd 2800+) and it hates my 360. The 360 looks upto the PC though becuase of its versitility. It doesn't know how powerful it is, its even envious of my old hacked original xbox's media centre, hehe.

Just using the wrench is not the easiest of things. I don't remember it that detailed, it's possible you have to kill those in the beginning right away. I didn't mean to imply everything can be avoided. It was more that in a regular shooter where you usually don't count every bullet, you go into it spraying bullets at anything that moves. Whereas here a more cautious approach is better. For example if some hybrid is patrolling around you might be able to let him pass and then continue on, or stay put for a little bit and figure out the best timing to attack for the "cheapest" kill (least bullets used or with melee).

You're the poor sucker there trying to survive mindset, instead of the often done Rambo/special forces ass kicker who's gonna show them who's da man ;)

The Take-Two Sues 3D Realms thread, of course this is the internet, so of course we're off topic ;).

Well, I think the reason we are off-topic now is because everything has already been said, same goes for the thread at the 3DR forums and all we can do is repeat what was already been said or simply sit and wait like we always did. But we came off-topic mostly because of the fact that we gamers are not always treaten like good customers, wehn you see how devs and publishers have lied to us, relased half assed broken stuff and other things then I see why we are talking about it right now.

So, guess this thread served its purpose.
