Hoping on them to put together a 'real' AoE game, and not some click-bait, micro-transaction, mobile bullshit is pinning your hopes on Gearbox to make a decent Duke Nukem game.

That's why I said I'd put on my DNF tinfoil hat. Typified by exclaiming that the game is "fer sher gonna" come out at specified tradeshow, with absolutely no indication given that said event is in any way likely to happen.

We know that something is going to be announced, and it may be something that MS will refer to as Age of Empires IV, but that dosen't mean it's what we are expecting in the form of a real continuation of the series.

To be fair, you said that in your third post. However, I was mostly referring to your doubts or hope overall, though I guess you changed your mind.

After what they did to AoE or to anything MS has at this point, not to mention that we're speaking of RTS which is very important factor, at best I expected them to forget about AoE after that crappy remaster (and that would be the best since the IP is in MS hands, at least it won't be raped by these hacks if it stays dead). And at worst, well, should I even mention this? That's what I expect to happen at the moment, by the way, they wouldn't remaster the game without a reason, right? I should say that I like Age of series along with Rise of Nations, I was very excited when I played it for the first time, especially after C&C which is probably my favorite RTS series, I mean RoN had actually real nations and it basically had modern era too, I think there is nothing like that even right now.

I gotta admit though it still surprised me that they decided to do something with AoE after all this time, I mean they didn't make huge announcement for other re-releases and those were remasters. That I didn't expect from MS at all, rather I expected to see something about C&C from EA, that's how unexpected it was. It doesn't even seems like MS care about gaming anymore these days (by that I mean making "IP killers" of course and there is nothing to kill right now when it comes to RTS genre).

Patch your original Age Of Empires with the Upatch then, it rebalance the game, increase the resolution, fix graphical bugs and make the game compatible on modern systems.

http://www.moddb.com/mods/upatch-hd
http://upatch-hd.weebly.com/

Probably the definitive edition will use the balancing of the original game with just few minor changes, I doubt they consider a fan-patch to enhance the game experience.

The Definitive Edition's balance uses UPatch HD's balance changes as the starting point, this was confirmed by the developers.

Anyway there are a few tracks available from the soundtrack of DE on the composer's SoundCloud, really amazing stuff:
https://soundcloud.com/tmasten/tracks

MS will be at Gamescom this year and AoE will be a significant part of it: they'll reveal the most likely final version of AoE DE (what we saw in the announcement trailer was a bit rough around the edges graphically according to the devs), most likely a new expansion for AoE 2 will be announced and they'll say something considering the future of the franchise. I don't expect AoE 4 to happen but I'll keep my fingers crossed just in case. AoE is a powerhouse on Steam so it would definitely make sense to announce a sequel, I just don't think it would be smart for them to do everything at once, maybe they'll say it's in pre-production or whatever.

I've listened to a couple and I don't recognize any particular tune from the original music (also the titles don't match - most if not all original AoE MIDIs have titles). Are these completely new or heavily reimagined originals (as I do recognize some parts)? The beginning of War Drums in the East reminded me of this and Mist Along the Nile sounds like this.

You can say it's completely reimagined though it's more like a soundtrack that uses elements from both the original MIDI and RedBook audio soundtracks.

For example here's Whirling Dulcimer which would be Medieval Melody from the RedBook soundtrack:

And this is the original song:

Some tracks will be new I think, for example the AoE DE main them you hear on the soundcloud pages is a brand new version of the original AoE theme. The original theme for AoE1 is Gray Sky and that's getting a new version too.

Edit: And just to directly refer to the tracks Mist Along the Nile is this one:

And War Drums in the East is this one:

Anyway the new soundtrack is already listed on Amazon so you can listen to 30 second samples of all the songs:

I don't want to flood the thread with pointing out random stuff but I'll just say this: AoE DE is already more like a new old school isometric AoE game than just a simple remaster of the old game (unlike what Blizzard did to StarCraft where the remaster is mostly just a graphical facelift). The original game had very serious balance issues, the graphics did not age well etc. so MS's "remaster" will have new balance and a very different art design that will still feel like AoE1 but in a modern sense. They don't want it to play like AoE2 so they won't implement some AoE2-specific features (like the Town Hall garrisoning villagers or formations) but the handling and controls will be smoothened out to the level of AoE2. They still use the original AoE1 engine (so you could switch to the classic look with a push of a button) but they hired the original engine developers from Ensemble to optimize it for the modern stuff.

Quote

We know that something is going to be announced, and it may be something that MS will refer to as Age of Empires IV, but that dosen't mean it's what we are expecting in the form of a real continuation of the series.

MS is slowly rebuilding Ensemble under the new Forgotten Empires team and I don't think they'd do that just to develop new expansions to AoE2 and to remaster AoE1 but you know, they want to do it right so baby steps. Thankfully now the Xbox team is led by Phil Spencer and the guy is no ordinary suit but a gamer / game designer turned into a suit because MS fucked up the Xbox One's launch + MS wants to make Windows a gaming platform again (and not fuck it up like they did with GfWL) so AoE quickly became an important IP instead of a dead one. A few years ago MS's gaming department was restructured, the Xbox team is now directly below the Windows department in the hierarchy so they no longer handle only console development. Basically MS is back as a PC developer, let's hope it will last this time.

The fact they using the Upatch as a starting point for build the remake is a surprise already.

AOE III (counting also Napoleonic Era) reaches up to nineteenth century so AOE IV should logically cover the beginning of the twentieth century, then all WW1 and WW2. This only if the rumors are true of course.

First 900 years and WW1 are more related to the concept of "empire" as the saga (and history actually) intends, in WW2 era maybe only the nazis with the Reich, the japanese and fascist with their fragile colonies still had some trace of those old strategic ideals or something that resembles. If Relic do not limit to bring the watch hands back, it will be interesting to see how they will adapt it.

I don't think they want to make Empire Earth out of it and at the end of the trailer the narrator says "a new age is upon us" or something like that so guess this video was just a recap of what we've seen so far and nothing of what's coming. Also considering the release date of DoW3, Relic's previous RTS it's safe to assume the game is still only in pre-production + they announced AoE2 DE and AoE3 DE too so those games are surely coming before AoE4 drops in.

Especially now that talking of the First colflict is back to fashion, mainly thanks to (boring) Battlefield 1, it would be a missed opportunity commercially talking not produce an RTS with a campaign setted in that period.

However we don't jump to the conclusions, "a new age upon us" can always simply mean "a new Age Of Empires game is coming" and then set it up in one of the epochs of the previous games, we have not seen any content that clarify yet.

Well, it's more than a guess honestly, I mean look at the structure of the trailer: every major release of AoE is represented in order of release. First it's AoE1 with the Greeks, then RoR with the Romans, AoE2, The Conquerors, AoE 3, AoE 3 Warchiefs and finally AoE 3 The Asian Dynasties.

Yeah, fuck Microsoft for not wanting to publish its own IP on a third party store when they have their own! Valve should get 30% of the money, it's only fair!

All joking aside I get why people are angry about the Windows Store but it's still in its infancy and it's definitely not GfWL 2.0.

Interesting. If they do 20th century stuff I hope they continue the tradition of keeping it strongly based on actual history. Yes, everyone knows about WWI and WWII and Nazis and such but it seems like everyone forgets about the Stalin.

I wonder if there'd be any Civil War stuff?

And we know even less about Francisco Franco.

I don't know if they will eventually put things like the "Kaiser or the Führer" or "King or Duce" as IA leaders (in campaings for sure), those look more like next age choises/cards but they should call them "Imperialism or Nazionalsocialism" and "Monarchy or Fascism" then.

We would have seen it during the Warchiefs expansion If they wanted to put it, maybe there is in some mod or custom campaign/scenario. An AOE IV may be post-american civil war already.

Well I'm sure everyone has seen this old thing but maybe the plan is still this?

A WW 1-2 era AoE4 would be interesting but honestly I don't think it's more interesting than a more classic setting simply because Company of Heroes exists. If I'd have to guess they'll choose something similar to AoE 3 but with a lesser focus on the colonization idea. It would make a lot of sense to make the game more focused thematically and frankly I'd say they should just explore the "revolution era" up until the point where technological advancement made the cavalry outdated: American revolution, French revolution, all the shit that happened in the 19th century that essentially culminates in WW1, technologically that stuff is right at the sweet spot where the game would still feel like traditional Age but there would be room for some more modern additions and whatnot. An AoE about the last battle of the "empires" and the end of that era in history.

There will be mod support in AoE DE though to what extent we've yet to find out. MS is working on enabling mod support on UWP for quite a while now.

As for Relic: I seriously don't get why people start literally hating good developers when they fuck something up. DoW3 was bad? Yes, it was but the thought process always stop there, there is no analysis, DoW3 was bad = Relic is shit now. Really? Let me tell you one thing: SEGA made money on DoW3. The game seems like a flop in every sense of the word yet SEGA actually managed to MAKE money on it. Now how is that possible? It's only possible if SEGA gave a very limited development budget to Relic. You can't make a proper RTS from pocket money, it's like going up to the best cook in the world and saying "here's a dollar, now show me what you can do, make me lunch!" No matter the cook, you'll get a shit lunch out of one dollar.

Relic is working with and under Microsoft Studios now (MS actually develops their own games too, they are not acting merely as publisher here) and they get the budget from MS which chances are means a proper AAA development budget. A lot is riding on the success of AoE4 for Microsoft, this game will make or break the Windows Store and MS as a PC developer / publisher + if this game is shit then AoE, the most important PC IP of Microsoft is dead. These are the situations when usually great games appear at the end because there's simply so much at stake that there is no other option.
