Your phrasing of "Linux or Ubuntu" is a little bit silly. It's like saying "I want to buy a used car or a Ford."
If you're a newbie I've heard good things about Linux Mint. I have it installed in a dual-boot on my Mac Mini for development-y things. I also have Debian and Ubuntu installs in VMs.
