Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour

Why do you people stick to "Duke Begins" as the next game? That was a side-game that has been abandoned for what, ten years soon? There is AFAIK no indication that anyone's gonna do Duke Begins. Which was a shitty idea for a game, anyway.

I was just using it as shorthand for a new gearbox developed duke game.

For the record I also think a reboot/prequel is a shitty idea.

They cut Sam's cameo from DNF to put him in DN3D?

Now, I'm curious if their joke would be better than the one from Serious Sam 2... ;)

Why was the Sam egg removed from DNF?

Not all of them, it's missing the incredibly hard to get 500 multiplayer kills achivement, I only just finished getting that for megaton last week by mass organizing a multiplayer all-nigher for deathmatches with 7 other players. And that will be all but impossible to get after world tour sadly.

It's hardly impossible to get - I got it doing mostly 1v1 with a friend. Just find someone else who likes the game.

Then I apologize for my tone - I just see this "disinformation" being spread around a lot.

I don't think it was ever announced or anything. There was supposed to be a rethread of the helmet achievement from DNF in The Doctor Who Cloned Me, with Sam as one of the 'heads', but in the finally released version it was nowhere to be seen. Just like the rumored karaoke.

I'll put $100 on Duke saying 'Why so serious?'

New "famous dead characters" easter eggs is something I'm looking forward. We can guess Serious Sam and a Big Bang Theory MC, wonder if there is any more.

I may be just stupid but can someone please explain to me the meaning of the Sam2 easteregg? I mean I never understood what it supposed to mean that Duke has a rocket up his ass..

I always took it that it was meant to show that Duke couldn't handle the Serious Sam enemies, kind of like how Doom Guy and the other are dead in Duke 3D.

They also could be joking that the reason DNF isn't out is that duke is dead here in Sams world.

The rocket in d'ass is probably just the devs having a laugh.

Yeah it's not a specific reference. Except maybe to his affinity for sexual escapades in an ironic way.

There is a British expression to "Put a rocket up his arse" which means 'I'm fed up with him time-wasting, chew him out so he stops slacking gets back on the job'. The idea being that with a 'pep talk' from the boss, he'll move extra fast - like someone had put a rocket up his ass.

Usage: Bill: "Wow, is that Jones? Why is he working and not chatting to the secretary's like he usually does? And look, he's got his order done in a quarter of the time!"
Tom: "LOL, yeah, the boss looked out of his office while giving a pep talk about how everyone has to pull together to make the latest shipment. He saw Jones chatting up Maggy by the water cooler, so he stormed out of the meeting and put a rocket up his arse."

That's how I always saw it. "Stop playing fucking WoW and get the fucking game done!!!"

Jon responds to people who think the old voicework is better than the re-recorded lines in World Tour. Starts at 8:34 and ends at 9:10. ;)

Fun Fact!

All Post DN3D and Pre DNF promos and box art had Duke with his teeth clenched!

Duke didn't start hiding his teeth or opening his mouth until DNF showed up since that's where his cigar started getting the spotlight, maybe that's why the voice has changed, those god damn cigars!

I more and more think it's not Jon's perfomance that's lacking, it's just that something has gone seriously wrong in the audio quality control department at Gearbox Software.

Or he's simply lying, aside from there being no reason to do so. If he mimicked them almost exactly and he can still do the old voice, why the hell lines sound really off? Were they slowed down or something?

It definitely sounds slower/more elongated. Stuff like "now ttthhhiiissss is a force to be reckoned with", and just longer individual words in general. Is he simply getting older and isn't able to pull off the rapid mouth movements required for fast, smooth Duke talk?

The main thing that's unfortunate in this whole Duke talk re-recording is that we're used to the original one-liners being said in a very specific way, with very specific tones, emphases and duration that just somehow sound cool. John's never going to be able to recreate all of this perfectly. I'm not even sure if he's trying to perfectly recreate how the lines were said, clenched teeth or no clenched teeth.

Out of curiosity, I've already taken the "Let's rock!" from World Tour, reduced the quality to try to make it identical to the original, but there's still a substantial difference between the two recordings.

He's lying. He doesn't sound anywhere near close to his performance in Manhattan Project, Zero Hour or 3D

there is a lot of content in The Doctor Who Cloned Me, I have noticed it in sound files specific to the DLC, such as dialogues beetwenn Duke, Graves and Proton (present in the announcement tease but absent in the game), more Duke Lines (drop soap in the prison shower among other), and the karaoke lines of Duke and NPCs saying they lve the song...

All I see in the box art pictures is Sylvester Stallone with blonde hair, Duke is short too.
That one boxart picture has a mean crotch bulge.. I lol'd. Stallone did a porn back in the day, probably hung well.. Duke is Stallone.

Spoiler

It's the difference between clenching your teeth and opening your mouth wide and speaking each piece clearly. Try it at home!

Hmm side by side the original does kind of sound flat and monotone, so maybe it's not the best example.

Maybe that's the point though. In Duke 3D it genuinely sounds like Duke's talking to himself, yet the more recent lines feel more like an actual performance. I'd prefer it to be in the fashion of the former.

Yeah, that's probably not the best example. I'm going to wait until World Tour releases so I can hear them all. I think he did nail a few of them very well, but others... not so much.

The lines he says in that interview sound better than what we have heard from World Tour so far. Maybe he was just not feeling it or was sick or something...

The mood probably was not be the same at 3D Realms offices back in 96' than at Gearbox today...

Original lines come clearly from lower and that's the difference. New ones don't sound as "masculine/stereoid" because they are coming from higher.

Maybe we should get this guy do the voices?

I think you might have just nailed it. Afterall, DNF was pretty much the most waited game forever (pun intended).

Makes sense for devs who are also fans, want to make a subtle statement that the game could indeed come already because there had been alotta waiting already by 2005.

What's funny is that a brand new, official episode for Duke3D had crossed my mind a couple of years back, but I was imagining it happening with Megaton Edition and being developed by the community. I was thinking maybe a Halloween-themed expansion pack or something. I'd prefer that over World Tour. If it wasn't for the original level creators returning to build these new levels in World Tour, I'm pretty sure I'd have zero interest in buying the game.
