Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour

What was even the point of rerecording old lines? Because of quality difference between new lines and the old ones? Was the sound quality really that bad?
But either way, that practice is bullshit either way. I can't imagine any movie trying to pull that shit. Sure, they do it with non-recorded footage, but not with the original one. It's been 20 years already, Jon is older, Duke3d is a true classic. It shouldn't be changed like that.

so uh how about all those donald trump references at the start of the trailer? i have been calling duke the donald trump of video games for months now and its weird to see gearbox take the same approach

Actually, the first quote is by Hillary Clinton, the second is by Trump, the third is by Ben Carson. So the trailer is just adding Duke as another candidate, not comparing him to Trump... Thank God.

Maybe we could also get the new music in MIDI form? That way the new stuff can be added to the vanilla game?

The new music is not in MIDI format. I used modern composition and multitrack audio mixing techniques in Cakewalk SONAR Platinum when creating it.

Did you personally take care of how the old musics would sound? What treatment did they have?

I did take care of all of the old tracks so that they can be played on consoles as well as PCs. I made sure they will sound as intended in the original game, including using the EMIDI loop points. I even used an authentic Roland SC-88 Pro in the process.

That's good to hear!

Looking at these new screenshots, it looks like the floor texture in the new Egypt screenshot doesn't repeat correctly. Or repeat at all. Some wall textures look misaligned as well.

In the screenshot with all the crates and the textures from The Birth, looks like there is a green slime sprite is hanging in the air at the bottom left.

I know I'm a nitpicker and the original game had misaligned textures too but come on.

The sign "Do not talk with strangers" is funny. But "Almost mail" sounds strange to me, because this joke can get only russian people.

The salt here and on Reddit is real.

"Oh no! Duke says 'Bazinga!' The sky is falling!!!1!"

As for the re-recorded lines: for me they sound really good, some of them are really on point - like literally the same, except for being high quality. 'Groovy' seems a bit stretched and the scream when falling sounds comical and should be re-re-recorded. Overall, it's obvious Jon tried to sound as close to the original deadpan-early-Duke delivery as possible. He wasn't successful 100% of the time, but I'd say 90%.

I like little shadows in the corners, makes it look pleasing to the eye. I wonder if this is polymer effect or drawing on textures?

Yeah it looks nice. I doubt it's drawn on the texture for two reasons, the ceiling and the pillars in the middle use the same texture and don't have it; although they could very well have the same texture twice, a 2nd time with shading on it (Shadow Warrior and Redneck Rampage games did that a lot) but that method would be old-school game design thinking, which is something the art team here doesn't seem to have.

2nd reason is, if you look at the ledge on the bottom right of the screen, it looks like it has that shadow as well, on a lesser degree.

In the new Russian level screenshot, I think some of the textures have it too near the lightsource. Hard to be sure to the picture quality. Looks like a light effect, more efficient than manually doing all the textures around each light source.

It's a shader effect, one that I wish polymerNG had.

I wouldn't be surprised if the wall shading you see on perpendicular surfaces is also just a shader effect.

This must have come up before, but I wonder/can't remember what happened to the orginal audio material.
Assuming 3D Realms didn't use a My First Sony to record the sound effects and voice acting, these could be used as a source for higher resolution masters if they're still available.

No attempt seems to have been made to upgrade any of the existing pixel assets either. There are a number of reasons for this:

1. It could be that a lot of touch-up work was done on the originals at current game-resolution, so that you couldn't just take the original sources and export them at higher res. If this is the case, then it would have involved a lot of work and would probably not be cost-effective (no matter how much we would disagree).
2. All the art-assets are locked away in 3DR's basement so they didn't have access to them.
3. They were too cheap.

What gets me about this is that they got Levelord and Blum back to do the levels and Jackson to do the music. Would it have really have broke the bank to get Chuck Jones back to output higher-res sprites for the monsters? Just upping it to 2x would look miles better.

Initially, I thought it's the bad translation of phrase "illegal aliens". Maybe it is.

Heh, I haven't thought about it being the joke instead of an error. Makes sense.

Something about the new lighting makes the textures look like somebody has traced the lines with a thick and black sharpie.

The lighter areas are extremely blown out, cant see any details.

On a positive note the new levels do look kind of interesting but I wont be paying £15 for one episode to a game I have already invested a lot of money in.

Bought it on pc in 1996, ps1, n64, steam, ios, gog, vita, xbox360 not buying it again just so gearbox can cash in.

I wonder how much form of CON code they've changed? Even if it's just a few bug fixes like fixing Newbeasts not being able to open doors unless they fall into one, Battlelords using the Pigcop's AI after being resized from the Shrinker and thus being harmless till it flinches etc..
I can already see they haven't fixed the Trooper's firing animation - it still only uses the second lot of frames for both before and after firing poses.

I think the new effects that EDuke32 can't already do could be added to Polymer without too much trouble as they're not real major. As soon as I saw the toggling between the classic renderer and whatever the one with random colored lights is and hearing how the SFX aren't upsampled for playback I just thought "alright I'm just going to wait for a mod that works with EDuke32 because I really don't want to go backwards from what it can do versus this stuff". Why would you redo all the dialog sounds and then not touch the rest and leave a difference that everyone can hear? Either do them all or leave them as-is. I always thought just upsampling for playback was fine. Hopefully the CON code is largely the same except for what was added.

Levelord has said depending on how this new episode is received, he may end up making more maps.

After looking at all the footage and reading stuff about World Tour, the only thing that interessts me is multiplayer. And I'm not going to pay 20 $ for that.

As lazy as this re-release seems, at least there are new levels. They could have just re released it with the new lighting and said "here it is remastered, lets be having your money".

LOL what happened to the sounds?

I think this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed.

Some of the "new" sounds by JSJ feel really out of place, both speaking of samplerate and intention/tone.

I'm excited by the new music though.

Some people may not like the direction of this release but to call it lazy is ridiculous. For god sakes it is coming with a new renderer, re-recorded Duke lines, new Duke lines, integrated developer commentary, multiplayer, a new weapon, new enemy, new music, and a brand new episode. Also the new renderer keeps looking better. You can see the switch to "3D" really well in this Red Light District video.

Another gameplay video, which heavily uses the key that switches between both renderer.

I really don't like the normal mapping they did. It's like only half of the texture use it and it creates another dichotomy. On top of the sounds, it makes a weird version where half got remade, half fucked up.

Also I take back what I said about liking the weapon wheel. It looks terrible. IMO they should have used transparency and used something other than 2x2 pixels icons. Then again this problem only concerns the console version really.

Edit : ha, we posted it at the same time, sorry.

Thanks! I'm curious as to whether anyone will find the drum & bugle corps-related bits in a couple of the songs. I'm sure Joe Siegler will love them. :D
