Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour

#1141

Someone else may have asked this question but... Will the PC, PS4 and Xbox One of Duke Nukem 3D World Tour contain single-player only cheats? I want to see the return of the cheat menu plz.

The levels look pretty good, not gonna jump on that bandwagon. Sound is bad though, but looking forward to checking out the music.

The sound should be easily fixable, it's just odd that they haven't done so yet...

I agree the sound quality is terrible. It's like someone locked down the quality to 8 or 11 KHz in the sound settings in SETUP.EXE. No buy unless the sound quality is improved and the single player only cheats is implemented on PC/PS4/XboxOne.

Arghhh these shitty gameplay videos are killing me, find somebody who can actually play properly please!

You thought that was bad? I present to you 20 minutes of unadulterated greatness below.

EDIT: When using the rewind feature it seems to cut off ambient sounds (see 15:35 in the video).

I don't think it's a matter of them having forgotten anything. I mean they obviously know the controls and stuff. It's true that any community mapper could probably build the same thing they've built in a fraction of the time simply due to that continuous exposure if that's what you mean.

The whole point is of this new episode is that it's in the style of the original game, perhaps with a few modern twists. Perhaps people mean if they've forgotten what the style of the original game is, then that'd be a problem. Similarly if they try to make it feel too modern, that'd destroy the original spirit that they're aiming for.

I only saw a few glimpses of the video, but I got the impression that if you removed the custom art, it'd feel like a pretty standard user map. Idk, perhaps if I saw the video properly I'd change my mind, or perhaps the other maps are better.

Edit: Haha those players are so bad... are they just pulling people off the street or something?
Actually any random person off the street would probably do a better job.

Lol, this thread is enough to make the originals question why the hell they signed up for this, I still love you originals.

You're charging me money for your passion, but I still love you.

Now get a real fucking job and do this shit for free.
Sitting at a computer and calling it work just isn't right. ;)

Having watched the video... I am neither impressed nor disappointed.

From one perspective: Comparing the new map in the video to user content, it is fairly mediocre, a good mapper could probably make something like that over the weekend and the new textures don't fit at all, they look flat and boring. The music is pretty bland.

Genuinely curious, other than the rare exception of something like a 2hr build project, has that happened much? It's surely not the norm, the text file for most any acclaimed user map will say it took months, or weeks at least. And unless aesthetics are all we're going by, it's probable these maps will be much better than mediocre.

New episode has me very very excited. Would be nice if they fixed the pistol sound though, definitely the most noticeable of the muffled sounds.

I know parts of these forums doesn't see it like that. but there's a lot more to a good map than just the looks. I wouldn't judge the new maps until I play them.

Maybe the guy's goal was to collect as many Pigcop shotgun blasts into his face as possible. Or he wanted to excessively test/demonstrate the newly recorded Duke pain sounds. In that case: Mission accomplished.
My favorite part is at 17:50... he turns around the corner, throws 3 (!) pipebombs at two Pigcops, manages not to hurt them at all, then turns around the corner again and instantly dies. Flawless fail. Can we see a boss fight played by the same guy maybe?

At least the save/load ("rewind") feature seems to be something. Didn't know that before. On the other hand, the normalmaps pulled over the old textures look absolutely horrible, same goes for the lighting. And sound quality doesn't even stand for debate. Can't wait to see "Red Light District" playable in EDuke32... Oh wait, that's possible already. Since ages. And it works flawlessly.

I'm almost convinced they do this on purpose to make games they don't like look bad. First Doom, now this, I'm sure others have been presented equally poorly. It's the new thing.

Keep in mind, we're talking about gaming journalism, the worst kind of journalism ever, gaming journalists were rejected for real job and I'm sure you know that modern journalism as a whole is just disgusting, so imagine how pathetic and worthless these people are if they couldn't get the job of "professional journalist".

These people don't play games and likely hate their job, I don't think they can handle even walking simulators and honestly, they don't deserve even views.

Does anyone else think the level names are completely unimaginative compared to the original episodes?

High Times is a poor name for the first level but I guess it makes sense since Duke gets high and goes around in circles.

Red Ruckus is a reference to the Soviet Union flag perhaps?

Bloody Hell is a phrase British people use a lot.

Golden Carnage is yet another poor name for referencing the Golden Gate Bridge.

Mirage Barrage I'm not keen on at all. I get mirages happen in deserts but that usually happens in wide open spaces unlike the maze that is shown.

Tour de Nukem is trying to be French...

Hollywood Inferno is a reference to the "new" final boss and could possibly reference Disco Inferno since Duke isn't a fan of disco

Prima Arena.... yeah, I give up, the names are really not the best

Yeah, they're no match for classics like 'Flood Zone', 'Spaceport' and the inventive 'Toxic Dump'

let's not forget 'Red Light District' or 'Movie Set' and of course 'Stadium'

My guess is Gearbox tries to kinda "overwrite" the historical version of DN3D we all know with one issued by themselves so they can also retroactively claim ownership of the pre-DNF time of the franchise (not talking about DN1+2 here now). It feels kinda forced and desperate.

Don't get me wrong - I really want to like this, but my concern is that those eight new levels won't last very long. Then it depends on Gearbox' approach regarding moddability. If it's like in DNF...

I don't see how moddability will be a problem. I don't see what could prevent people to make maps using the new assets. As for mods... well, they'd have to be made specifically for WT and with old pre-EDuke32 restrictions. Not gonna happen, the only mods will see for this will be the ones fixing sounds and graphics issues.

As for gaming journalists being bad: they've always been bad. Don't forget, while we can afford to specialize on a few genres or even games, "gaming journalists" have to play everything (every genre) and have to constantly switch to other games. They don't have time to get good, and it's another reason why gaming journalists suck, since they can't really afford to have any real, non shallow, hindsight regarding gameplay mechanics.

"Red" is just a general reference to Soviet Union(because of the flag of course). And "Ruckus" might be a little pun since it could be erroneously read as "ruskus"("C" is read like "S" in russian).

Another gameplay video of the same level.

Edit : I don't think this was posted here either. They show some stuff including bits of the same level again, half way through, and they play with the mouse.

It's a better player who also obviously knows the map, but I'm fairly certain they were using a controller. Their turning is smooth but never very fast.

Jeez, the amount of issues missed in testing is kind of unfortunate. There are several problems that stand out to us here that anybody who isn't intimately familiar with the game will ever notice. However, they all look like things that can be patched. Gearbox told me they were planning on having me help them out for several months post release, so maybe they'll just let me fix the problems myself. ;)

I haven't actually watched any of these videos through because I don't want to spoil myself... But my curiosity keeps making me come back to check a few seconds every time anyway.

... what the hell is going on at 5:20 in the first video ? ... is it me or do respawns use the teleporter sprites and sounds? That looks stupid as hell. Also when dying from a shotgun shot, the Firefly just freezes into place for a second before exploding, what the hell?!

Err...I was talking about the extremely bad playthrough videos by the journalists. Nothing to do with Gearbox.

Still, though. Take some pride in your work. No YouTuber would be caught dead playing THAT badly. It's just asking for criticism and insults.

On that new amsterdam vid, does stock duke clip the keycard reader that badly like that? Check 3:09

Anyway, what feels wasted potential is that there are no new true code additions when it comes to game play so far ;)
No new sector effects or even tiny code tweaks like that respawn sound. Even with eduke alone you could pull off simple sector stuff not seen in the original game.

Feels kinda sad considering that the community has been improving over stock d3d for so many years, even pulling off so many "what if" scenarios..
After all these years when EP5 finally comes out, no true advancement gets done in that field. Even EP4 had a few cool additions to it, silent 1way teleporter being one.

I hope that I'm proven wrong with the other levels, really interested on that egypt one.

Supposedly, from what I've heard, there was talk of making a final update to DN3D with some of the ROR updates that made it into Shadow Warrior. This never saw the light of day.

I don't suppose for a minute that any of that was put into World Tour?
