Game within a game.  "Gameception."

Hi everybody, a question is running in circles in my head:

Is there a videogame that includes Doom or games of that era within the game, I mean as if in Doom 4 you could play doom on an arcade of the future, or like if in bombshell you could actually play its own prequel, I think it only fits in in fps...

Is there alrready a videogame that could run an older videogame on lts engine? Is necessary at all?

Sorry I'm a bot. This could be on the comic thread... Lol

I suppose it's entirely possible, all it would take would be to jump from one application to another, then add some visual effects.

I know there is a GZDoom mod where you can play Doom on an arcade machine. So you can play Doom while playing Doom. You can see video here:

And I think there is also a Doom 3 mod/port that allows you to play original Doom through Doom 3 engine. Hope this is what you're looking for.

I should probably release a newer version of that, the one currently released is quite old compared to the current development version on my PC.

Are there other games that do this comercially? It woud be a nice way to promote a game inside another game...

Goldeneye 64 has all of Rare's ZX Spectrum games built inside the cartridge. It's disabled by default, but if you activate it, it becomes an option to load up the ZX Spectrum emulator.

System Shock 2 has plenty of good mini games (you can play them on Gamepig which is Gameboy reference). There is even Ultima clone called Overworld which you can actually beat. You can find cartridges for it or just hack it to get all games.

v1.3D came with the first two games on the disc. We're talking about playing a game in the game world of another game.

The only game I remember that you can play an older iteration of the same series inside the newest game is Mortal Kombat II inside Shaolin Monks, but you access it through the extras menu - not from some in-game arcade or something.
But for games that are not from the same series, you can play a viking-themed pac-man inside Prey (and another mini game), an Asteroids-like game in Bioshock 2 Minerva's Den, an incremental game where you punch turkeys in Doom 3 (though I hardly consider this king of "game" a game) and some made-up minigames in GTA San Andreas arcade machines.

Shenmue had playable arcade machines with Space Harrier and other old Sega games on them, IIRC.

Wasn't there talk a while back about being able to play Duke 3D from within DNF, and do other real life computer things like send emails from within the game? Of course none of that came to fruition.

Can't believe I forgot about 龍が如く5/Yakuza 5. You can play mini games there as well, but the most interesting game is Virtua Fighter 2 (from 2:23).

Wish SEGA stopped being incompetent and ported Yakuza series to PC.

There was never a way to play Duke3D in DNF, but originally, the first level (the stadium fight) was supposed to have Build-style graphics. It was decided to give it actual DNF graphics so gamers wouldn't believe that the whole game would look like Build.
The email feature was cut when a beta tester discovered that it was possible to bind the action of sending an email to a key, but instead of talking about potential problems, he decided to bind the action of sending an email to 3DRealms to every single key on the keyboard. As a result, 3DRealms was mailbombed every time he did anything with DNF, and the feature was cut. This is one thing I can't blame George for cutting, because it would've led to severe spam problems.

Day of the Tentacle has the entire playable game of Maniac Mansion (its predecessor) on one of the in-game computers.

In Timesplitters 2, you could play various games on your Datapad. You'd find them in the levels, each with their own music too.

Here's examples of some below.

It's the same with Fallout 4, you could find in-game magazines that gave you games to play on your Pip-boy.

The fan remake of Space Quest 2 by Infamous Adventures (which I helped compose music for) had a complete remake of the ancient Sierra On-line game "A Troll's Tale" inside towards the end of the game playable on an arcade machine.

The later Commander Keen games had Pong playable in the menu entitled "Paddle War".

I built a "playable" arcade machine in my DukeMall map. I've always enjoyed those reality-breaking concepts appearing within games.

Rare was notorious for this. Aside from what has already been mentioned, there were also arcade machines within Donkey Kong 64 wherein you could play the original Donkey Kong and Jetpack games.

Beyond that, the secret items in Banjo-Kazooie were intended to carry over to Banjo-Tooie via a cartridge transfer, which would have been extraordinarily impressive, had it worked out as they planned.

They also buried a fully-functional counter-operative mode in Banjo-Tooie, and said nothing about it until after it was discovered.

Metal Gear Solid pulled some cool stunts as well (namely the Psycho-Mantis battle), though I'm less familiar with that series.

In Wolfenstein: The New Order, in the Resistance Underground Camp, you can play a modified version of the first level of Wolfenstein 3D, it is quite weird looking.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has 2 or 3 mini-games within it, one is Galaga in CJ's Mom's house, the other one or two are found in bars throughout the game. The closest bar to CJ's Mom's House is the one with the Green Bottle and Green Lights in Ganton down the street from the Clothes Store on Gove Street.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines: In the Extra Features it has Missile Command, Centipede, and the demo to T3: The Redemption.

And in Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, every chapters(included Prologue chapter) also have those modified version of levels in Wolfenstein 3D episode 1 as secret levels. And some players complaints it for laziness or somethings that I don't get.

There's actually a fully functional ZX Spectrum emulator hidden in GoldenEye 64.

I thought the GoldenEye 64 cartridge was pressed for space, requiring some areas to be cut. Yet they're cramming that sor of thing in there?

Rare was not exactly known for its keen design decisions with that game.

Asteroids (Activision '98) bundled a port of Asteroids as a post-game reward.

There's a mini Galaga iin Mortal Kombat 3 and a mini Gradius in Blades of Steel.

The Out Of This World 3DO port has Stalactites. Stalactites also had a DOS version once published through PLBM Games

Tyrian's DESTRUCT code has this realtime artillery type thing which is quite fun (with humans). I'd often install the shareware just for this one after having exhausted the game's very replayable one episode.

and finally, and I know this will lower my reputation... Call of Duty: Black Ops has Zork.

And concerning EDuke32 how viable is to make a mod that can be played inside another mod. For example there's a map in a mod where you find a huge screen where you can actually play another map of this same mod without leaving the the first iteration, once you leave or finish the map you can continue through the original one.

Is it possible or too complex? Does it really worth to code something like that if the game plot is actually exploiting this feature?

EDIT:

What about playing exactly the same mod you are playing and even use the menu to continue playing from any specific saved file? it would be really hilarious if for example you find your self playing the mod in that screen, and even you can kill your self!!!! :whistling: :woot: :P Please somebody tell me this is possible in EDuke!!!!!
