It's official: Intel shuts down the cheap overclocking party by closing Skylake loophole

It's really a monopoly thing. They can't leave good performing, cheap products available to the consumers because it's going to put the competition out of business. They need a decent competitor so they can control the market.
same reason microsoft bailed out apple back in '97

This isn't really much of a loophole. BCLK overclocking is a fucking waste of time, goes nowhere, and can even damage your system if set too high. I've never messed with it and never will.
Fuck this newer Intel garbage regardless, though. I built a system for a buddy last weekend. Got an i5-4690k to 4.4GHz stable...an absolute fuckton of work. The amount of parameters you need to tweak is just insanity compared to earlier Intel chips or even AMD stuff. Thing runs like a beast though...after three days of tweaking and stability testing. Not gonna lie I'm pretty proud of myself for reaching the absolute max safe speed you can get on air cooling, and having it (very rarely) hit 82 C under load. But seriously, fuck Intel for making it so hard!
Also I just snagged another 2500k for peanuts to replace this fucking burned out dud of a chip Sketchball McGee sold me a couple years ago on eBay.

Yeah, that's one of those times where I'll take the annoying plastic clamshell box over the "custom packaging".

I know I wouldn't be overclocking something to the bleeding edge for a "customer or buddy" who had no idea how to do it themselves.
You're going to be back dicking with it the moment it gets 5 particles of dust on the cooler and overheats, or some such bullspit.

Customers who are calling up every 5 minutes are no fun.

When I was fixing computers out of my home some years ago, my biggest issue was Windows... charging for it.
Windows would end up being half the bill most of the time. Mind you most of the computers themselves weren't even worth the price of Windows.

I haven't played with Skylake yet. Microsoft retroactively pulled Windows 7 support for it so I've been speccing Haswell systems. They're cheaper and perform nearly the same.
Sketchball McGee did a 5GHz suicide run on this processor and as a result it suffered more electromigration than a German city. It doesn't really overclock anymore and always needed more voltage than it should have. Such is the joy of used parts - if you fuck up you can make it someone else's problem. I've never degraded a processor core because I'm not a complete retard. Heat + voltage = gradual death. Shit is that simple.

It's got a pretty big buffer zone. It usually hits mid-70's under full load.

I have a PC Chips M912 motherboard with a real UMC chipset and L2 cache. It'll run pretty much any 486 chip out there. It overclocks well too, plus it has that nifty GUI AMIBIOS. I love that board, but almost all of the M912's are trash. I got this one from an ex-girlfriend's dad and it's been great for many years, I just don't use it much anymore. I'm about to give it a purpose again, though.
Every other M912 I've seen either has a generic chipset with a sticker over it, fake cache, or both. I think the main reason these were unstable was the shit-ass chipset - my real UMC board has been solid as a rock since day one.

All you need is a can of air duster and maybe some WD-40, and you can get that baby up and running again in no time.
