Retro game promos  "Trailers, pictures and more."

Since I'm uploading a ton of trailers for old PC games (sometimes for consoles, but rarely), I thought you guys might also be interested in them. I'm also coming across some other kinds of promotional content, so I'll post everything here as I go.

Now, some of this stuff may be common, but I have been uploading stuff that not too many people have seen (i.e. trailers for shovelware collections like D!Zone and others). So I'm hoping you'll get something out of this, since it's also quite a lot of work to do this. Enjoy!*

P.S. If you have something cool to show, don't be afraid to chime in!

Here's the channel link for the trailers, where there's already trailers for about 85 different retro games:

Also here's a bonus set of 24 early (1995) (official?) screenshots from Quake:

I'm assuming that the D!Zone trailer is the same as the one that was available for download from the WizardWorks website?

I'm quite interested in pre-release screenshots and/or non-interactive demo versions. Most of the stuff in that thread is more or less well known though. Maybe this could be useful?

I'm sitting on roughly 80 more trailers to upload, and since the Monolith ones are all over YouTube, I've postponed them for later.

I think I'll add the Amiga stuff later on.

Thanks a lot... I have collected up most of the D!Zone series since it was released, as well as other DooM compilations. I have never seen this video before. :D

Here is an older image when I was test-fitting PC DooM games and add-ons to the shelves... :D Note the D!Zones on the second shelf. D!Zone was my first real compilation of add-ons. Lots of memories in those boxes.

A while go, while browsing that French website with game mag scans, I found a full-page ad for Nebula Fighter, a little shareware side-scrolling shmup made by an Italian team:
http://download.aban.../page%20095.jpg

I was a bit surprised that a relatively obscure title would get such a big ad. Apparently it was by some local shareware publisher.

Just found some video preview of Master of Orion II: mooiipr.zip, associated text description: mooiipr.txt.

Also some preview stuff for Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail: trip.zip, smltrip.zip, trip.txt.

Absolutely no idea how rare/common this stuff is (pretty common I guess since it was all downloadable).

Non-interactive demo of Cyril Cyberpunk: cc_prev.zip. The archive is not original, but the readme suggests that this demo was distributed in a zip file called cc_prev.zip. The unpacked demo files were found here. The executable is dated Aug 8, 1995.

Also here's the original distribution of the shareware v0.51: CYBERKID.EXE. This one is dated Feb 17, 1996. There's an earlier shareware version with the same version number, which was available from the German publisher CDV as a split version in three parts: cyril01.exe, cyril02.exe, cyril03.exe. It contains a De-ICE installer. The date stamps on files and the copyright notice are from 1995, making this the earliest known playable version. The installer files have date stamps from Jan 25, 1996.

Further on the topic of promotional/pre-release screenshots, there's a pretty widespread slideshow of The Elder Scrolls: Arena from 1993 which comes from the time when the game still had a party of characters: arenasld.zip. However, later Bethesda recycled many these shots by replacing the HUD with the one from the final game, and re-released the slideshow. Some of these shots were used on the back cover of the game's box. This version of the slideshow is, for whatever reason, very rare. The demo download page at bethsoft.com indicates that the file name was also arenasld.zip and the size was 519,478 bytes. While the file has not yet been found, a repack of its contents is available here. This version was originally found by Awoo and posted here.

Many pre-release screenshots from Daggerfall have been documented by Hallfiry and listed at the UESP Wiki.

The Terminator: Future Shock also had a large number of pre-release screenshots available at the official page. Many of them were also downloadable in a single zip archive, shockgif.zip, of which I believe this is a valid copy save for an externally added FILE_ID.DIZ. The screenshots at Bethesda's site have not been preserved by the Wayback Machine.

I have found a gallery with pre-release shots (in JPEG quality and stretched for correct aspect ratio) here. Images numbered 001, 004 and 005 are termsht2.gif, termshot.gif and briefing.gif from the site/downloadable pack respectively. Notice the pre-release HUD and interface buttons.

The demo versions of Future Shock also show some screen shots upon exit. Each version has a shot made inside some compound, driving a vehicle and piloting aircraft. These are:
Spoiler

The first two are from demo v0.144 and the other three - from demo v1.00. The driving screenshot from v0.144 is identical to drive.gif from the site. All these shots except the flying one from v0.144 are used on the back side of the game's box. The box also shows one currently unknown screenshot with an old version of the laser rifle (no night vision image in the scope).

SkyNET also had a large number of screenshots on the official pictures page (again, nothing preserved by the WM). Here's a list of file names:
Spoiler

Again, a file called skypics1.zip with (some of) the shots was available from Bethsoft, but not preserved either.

Hallfiry's catalogue shows that many of the shots from Jan 07, 1996 are found here. The image of this CD does not seem to be available though, I have asked Hallfiry about it. Maybe some files are available under different names on some CDs or elsewhere.

The SkyNET demo only shows very small images of screen shots upon exit:
Posted Image
Three of these are also shown on the back of the box, and two found here in small resolution.

However, the Absolute Games.RU website has preserved a number of apparently official screenshots in high resolution, including some of the above. I've just re-uploaded the images here. The file names were not preserved. The back of the box shows shots number 3, 5, 7 and 9.

For other games, Bethesda's downloads page mentions a slideshow of The Terminator: Rampage (ramslide.zip, 299,436 bytes), and non-interactive demo of The Terminator: 2029 (2029.zip, 2,275,891 bytes). Neither file has been found yet. cd.textfiles.com has a version of ramslide.zip but the size doesn't match. It's possible that this is an earlier version of the slideshow compared to what Bethesda had on their site (similar to the two Arena slideshows).

Additionally, I have found a slideshow of DletaV: deltasld.zip.

On an unrelated note, a CD at cd.textfiles has two packs of Heretic screenshots in PCX format: HRTCPCX.ZIP and HTSCRNS!.ZIP. HRTCPCX.ZIP contains pre-release screenshots taken from the Interactive Entertainment's preview of the game.

Hallfiry just uploaded these here. The shots are of very low quality, but they allowed to identify five of the high-res shots: fly1.gif, fly3.gif, runover.gif, termin1.gif and trex2.gif. Additionally, this box scan likely shows sub.gif, guy1.gif and newguy5.gif. I have tried to guess what the rest of the shots might be called (based on known file names), but still have a lot of doubts on that.

[Edit] Mark Jones' site also seems to have a couple of shots with multiplayer mode "guys":
http://www.mjonesgra...com/skynet.html

Guess what, one more shot and a couple of cropped images found in this review. The filenames are all changed, but I'm guessing the new image is either guy1.gif or newguy5.gif (or maybe one of those netload*.gif images?). The cropped things are probably from cutsc0*.gif and again new guy or netload stuff.

The same site has an article on SkyNET multiplayer, with an array of screenshots. However, they must have been taken by the article's author: his name is Jason D'Aprile, and the shots show JAD as the player's name (I guess).

On a different note, here's a fully preserved website for Crusader: No Remorse from Origin:
http://www.origin.ea.com/crusader/noremorse/index.html

[Edit] The Crusader site contains a download of the game's music tracks in MOD format: crusounds.zip

The February '96 issue of the Joystick magazine has a four-page article on Future Shock:
http://download.aban...r%201996%29.jpg
http://download.aban...r%201996%29.jpg
http://download.aban...r%201996%29.jpg
http://download.aban...r%201996%29.jpg

It has some shots already known either in electronic form or from the back of the box (like the one on the bottom of p.91). There are certainly more shots than listed on Bethesda's page. However, they certainly had more, like the screenshots shown in the demo versions, most of which seem to have been never featured on the site. The accompanying CD doesn't seem to have anything Terminator-related though.

[Edit] Joystick January '97 has a review of SkyNET, with some of the already known shots plus quite a few more:
http://download.aban...81997-01%29.jpg
http://download.aban...81997-01%29.jpg
http://download.aban...81997-01%29.jpg

P. 112 definitely shows sub.gif and maybe sniper.gif just above it.

[Edit 2] Two page SkyNET preview in Generation 4 Dec '96 issue:
http://download.aban...81996-12%29.jpg
http://download.aban...81996-12%29.jpg

And more SkyNET in the Jan '97 issue:
http://download.aban.../Page%20124.jpg
http://download.aban.../Page%20125.jpg
http://download.aban.../Page%20126.jpg
http://download.aban.../Page%20127.jpg

P. 125 seems to show globes1.gif (top right).

What's great about these that most of these (usually, didn't check the links yet) are used officially in the back of the boxes.

That's also a good point for research. In some cases the box shots aren't the same as the official site stuff. For example, I don't think that any of the KKnD screenshots from Beam's site are featured on the box scans at MobyGames.

Further on the topic of official screenshots from Terminator games, it turns out that LaserSoft (the guys who published the Deluxe Edition of ROTT) distributed Future Shock and has got three screenshots on the screenshot page. Two of them are new. Not sure if they come from Bethesda though. For other games, the screenshots on the LaserSoft site are official.

[Edit] As a matter of fact, I'll speculate that the second shot from the LaserSoft page is camp.gif and the third lookdown.gif that are mentioned on the official Future Shock page:

Quote

NEW Screenshots as of 10/27/95:

biolab.gif - 320x200 21KB
camp.gif - 320x200 19KB
lookdown.gif - 320x200 19KB

[Edit 2] Or maybe the second shot is outpost.gif from this batch:

Quote

NEW Screenshots as of 09/27/95:

boxhk.gif - 320x200 24KB
outpost.gif - 320x200 25KB
boxtblow.gif - 320x200 21KB
boxtrex3.gif - 320x200 22KB
