Any Duke related dreams?

Last night I had another Duke3D related dream but I forgot about what was exactly, it was mostly about just playing some user maps.
#152 Posted 15 December 2017 - 09:45 AM
Later in another part of the map, on some destroyed bridge, it was about fighting full sized Battlelords, Overlords and even Cycloids which were placed above some crashed cars. However they had the same strength as a mini boss (only 1000 points) and they didn't end the episode upon being killed. So they could be easily taken out with the RPG from far away, since they didn't leave their sector.

Sounds cool dream. Has that door idea been actually done in any Duke maps yet? If not.. to me it sounds like a unique/innovative idea that would be worth to turn into reality. If not for anything else than to see atleast how well it worked
I haven't had any Duke related dreams in quite some time. Lately my dreams have mostly been either something from my life history, or something from my life history and fictional parts in it.

Thanks. And I don't think this idea was ever done in any of user maps but I don't think it's possible to tag a door sector to also spawn enemies upon entering that sector. I know a workaround for this is to make a small separate sector in front of doors to trigger the enemies spawning in the next room.

I also had a Duke related dream a while ago about some recently released user map where you were on top of a building and needed to finish the level in time or the whole building blows up. I don't remember too much about this one other than barely making it in the last few seconds.
In past few weeks I've had more Duke related dreams but I forgot entirely about them, which is a shame since I think at least one of them was interesting enough to describe it here. Maybe I will have more similar dreams in following days.

I think one of the levels were in an elderly care home, and one of the old women living there was either an alien impostor or someone who had information, and you needed to find out who - again, quite like a movie.

After that I went to play Duke3D and at first it showed the EDuke32 main menu but the background showed some lava canyon or something like that. When I started a new game, the map seemed like a combination between Dark Side and the red underground part of the Abyss (before the part where you enter the alien ship to confront Battlelord). It felt a bit creepy but before anything happened, the dream sadly ended. This is what happens if you watch a few Duke3D videos on YouTube before bed, you get weird remixes of some maps.

I didn't think the thing was as awesome as Duke 3D is but I do think it was cool that there was finally a modern Duke project that wasn't limited to the Build Engine. I also wasn't that fond about it being openworld style design.

The next dream before that one, I was once again in Duke-Burger, but something was really off (And I'm not talking about messed up Textures). There wasn't any enemies at all and instead I was being hunted down by this one particular enemy known as the Creep (Who's sprites were created by Sebabdukeboss20). The Creep pretty much chasing after me through out the entire restaurant. With no sound and music once so ever aside from the sounds of the Creep, it felt like I was playing a horror game.
Lastly and the older dream of the trio, I was playing the final level of the fourth episode, The Queen. There wasn't too much difference when playing through the map in the dream. At least up until I got up to the area where you would face the Queen. Once I got up to that point, the Alien Queen wasn't even there at all, and instead I ended up facing a monster from the Realm 667 Bestiary, known as the Supreme Fiend. The Supreme Fiend was pretty acted the same as he would do in Doom, firing Plasma, and shooting homing bombs at you, although the plasma he fired was blue instead of green. That's pretty about it.
And as such, I decided to turn that dream into a reality...

In the dream, there was a secret area -- an abandoned subway station -- that could be accessed by jumping off to the right from the train while travelling from one regular station to another. The abandoned station had a collapsed exit to the surface which you could climb up the wall to get to, with the surface area having broken rock and possibly some vines and/or toxic slime. There was an Imperial Stormtrooper at the station that was standing facing the wall, so I tried to sneak up on him and score a hit with the tazer baton, but at the last moment he got alerted and this didn't work out as perfect as I'd hoped.
On a second playthrough there was no Stormtrooper but as I approached the climbable wall to the surface (for some reason one of the textures on it showed a perspective view of a metallic corridor, perhaps a camera screen) a timed door to the right opened up and through it I got to another surface area with a small round flower-bed that had powerups, and a couple of friendly NPCs. One was a blonde girl with short hair who had an eighties look to her, another I think a kid with a baseball cap. One powerup looked like a smallish milk carton but somehow marked "food"; I had no idea what to do with it. The area was small and walled (the walls and the building from which I emerged both painted white), but you could see part of a cityscape with some multi-storey buildings and dark cloudy sky (as if a thunderstorm was about to begin). As I approached another door to exit the area the dream ended.
Mind you, I only played the demo of TekWar, and this was quite a while ago, plus watched some bits of a full version playthrough on YouTube.
I think that the dream was at least in part inspired by Ion Maiden.

A little backstory. I have very vivid dreams. I have very vivid dreams that often wake me up at night, or greatly effect me emotionally when I do wake up.
I have also had several dreams that are fairly concurrent. They are a continuation off of each other, the same world, the same events. Let's just say whatever is going on in that imaginary world is not good.
At one point in that world, Duke Nukem Forever came out and it was not quite the game we got. This game had a much stronger emphasis on the gunplay and verticality. Climbing up the sides of buildings via fire escapes, using a jetpack to get around. The Jetpack even had a toggle mode between throttle and hover. So you could blast off like super man. Which I did at one point, right through a window. Crouched as I landed, did a slide move and gut-fucked a pig cop with a shotgun.
A lot of the dream had me going down the Las Vegas strip, blasting aliens with a pistol, shotgun, and pipe bombs, and I was constantly using moves like diving and sprint-dash. At one point an Alien trooper came around a corner, using it's jetpack. It dynamically landed atop a car, and then leap down in front of me. Right as it was about to fire I hit the fire hydrant in front of it, and the blast from the water line rupturing hit the alien in the chin and sent him careening back over the car.
The whole thing started in Duke's casino, much like in the final game. Only instead the invasion was already under way. Duke is interrupted by an Alien assault into his penthouse right as he's about to get it on with his (brunette) secretary. They start strafing him with scout ships and alien troopers come flying in with jetpacks. You use a secret button hidden in a statue to immediately descend into the Duke cave. The pause in the action is very brief. Just long enough to gather some ammo, get a lay of the land, and step out into the casino proper. Where combat, and interactivity were seamlessly matched up. "Glory Kills" ala Doom 2016 were present, but they were more in line with Duke's attitude. At one point I grabbed a rampaging pig and smashed his face into a slot machine, sending sparks and glass everywhere, and money shooting out. Duke quipped "JACKPOT!"
The whole thing came to an end when I picked up the classic RPG and took aim at a "Corvette" sized alien attack ship that was about to start bombing the street I was on.
As dreams go it wasn't particularly outrageous in terms of scope, honestly. It felt like what I thought DNF was going to feel like before 2011 came around. Like you were playing an interactive, adaptive, semi divergent action movie. Oh you were still flipping switches, grabbing key cards, and doing the old school stuff, but it was all about the flow, grace, speed, and power of Duke Nukem. When I woke up I was actually pissed off. Like, I wanted to smack George, Scott, Randy, and all the other top guys in the face. Why are you wasting a golden egg? What the fuck is wrong with you guys?
....Man. Why can't they do anything with this character anymore?

It had some changes, like new weapon sprites. The chaingun had a slight redesign, with a smoother shape and the body being black. There were some added enemies, these were all tougher mini-boss style foes. There were also full new boss stages added, such as a dragon-looking alien in the middle of episode 1, in an arena reminiscent of WT's colosseum. The dragon boss sprite had some bright green pixels at the edges (Doom style) that they had missed to clean up.
There were also some expanded areas in levels, such as the alley in E1L1 having an entrance to another building, but it wasn't something I reacted to so I guess in "dream-canon" the level had always been like that. It also played really well with a controller, and had drop-in multiplayer (coop).

Another, more recent dream was of me running around some kind of futuristic military base, fighting octobrains, enforcers, protozoid slimers, and all the regular assault aliens. The level-design was pretty cool, with corridors intertwining with cave-like areas, then with labs, then with barracks of some kind. I had to hit a series of switches so I could open some door or activate some super-weapon (don't remember), all the while a couple of overlords were waiting outside, trying to reach inside the building and catch me. Finally I'd get to the roof, right above them, and I'd be really hesitant to get to the end of the level because they were blocking the way, and I was only armed with a ripper, an rpg, and a freezethrower. I actually had to get down into one of the control-rooms (the final area was in some kind of loading dock) to open the big door at the end, but they somehow managed to squeeze inside the control building and started chasing me around. It was brutal, felt like the mess hall from e4l1 of Atomic Edition (what was it called? The Birth? The Nuclear Winter rendition of that level still gives me shellshock )

Anyway I just had a Duke3d related dream last night. I remember that I found out a recording of me when I was playing the game back in 2006 and I was playing in the first few levels of Lunar Apocalypse. The thing is that in the dream, the levels were looking a lot different and more alien themed than space themed. And the status bar was a bit different too, resembling more the Doom status bar layout with the Duke boxes (health, armor, ammo) shown (without the status bar face though), although the same size as the inventory box, to match the size of the Doom status bar boxes. A bit difficult to explain certain details. That's all I remember.

There was a scripted scene where a large number of zombie-like monsters would enter a crowded church, coming in through doors and windows, to gather at the front and begin some sort of dark mass.
There was also DukeMatch, and getting fragged would reduce your duke4 reputation.

A few night ago, as just a passing detail I dreamt I turned off a TV that was running Duke 3D on Saturn. It showed just the title screen/main menu, though it was different from how it really is. It had the Duke 3D logo, though larger than usual, and some copyright text or something below, over a "demo", but the demo was just a security camera swinging left to right over E1L1.
Then last night, as another passing detail, I dreamt there was another Duke spin-off for the PS1. This one was an isometric 2D game, very similar to Crusader: No Remorse, with pre-rendered 3D sprites. There was a strip club level, and it had full nudity which I thought was odd, but I recall thinking (in the dream) that they got away with it due to the sprites being so small there wasn't any detail.

Eventually I realized that one of the switches was different, placed opposite the door, so I stood inside the doorway and hit it with the pistol (not necessary, as you can just barely hit the switch and miss the train), stepping back as the train sped off and finding myself on the tracks. The trains movement was buggy and it returned to its starting point somewhere short of the station, both doors were closed. The track seemed much longer than it should have been, where after a while it was impossible to see either station and instead the geometry ran off into the black draw fog in the distance. The game ran slowly now, I thought probably too many monsters were spawning, there were lots of monster noises including strange, snake like sounds that aren't in the game, as well as the slowed down sounds my 'boss makes in Dimension Shift, most of which aren't in 1.3D. somehow I knew monsters were now on the tracks at each end and I had no ammo left, so hoped I could find the opening again before they found me, wondering why they were still roaming and weren't being put to sleep by the game, sure they should have timed out by then.
Finally i saw the tiny opening in the middle of the wall lights, even though it hadn't been in that spot seconds earlier. Some additional glassy sounding synth pads began fading into the music and I looked into the small space before me. The walls were like a purple version of the metal used in the airlock, being lit with cyclers like the starting room, but there was nothing inside aside from a strange looking weapon sprite I couldn't pick up. Disappointed, I turned around and noticed a small vent placed improbably below the opening, off to one side and complete with a few draw bugs, it seemed the small room had sunk a little way while I was in there without my noticing. It was too small to enter, but the game switched to the shrinker automatically and the sprite did this weird animation where it shrank vertically, as though Duke were pointing it down, then the sound effect played, Duke shrank and i entered the vent.
The vent turned 90 degrees to the south immediately, making the wall between it and the small room basically '1 pixel thick' before it turned twice more, now heading north. it seemed to go on for a very long time and I was sure Duke would grow back to normal size, the gulping and gasping sounds kept playing, I was losing health, there were small medkits placed but they couldn't be collected due to the shrunken state, so I had to keep abusing the medkit, there were occasional steroid sprites among the medkits but I wasn't stupid enough to use those.
Finally I fell out of the vent into an area made of those flat, gray tiles and black grid tiles, it seemed like a docking station for a ship like that in L1 of LamedDuke. There was an area blocked by forcefields, a central window with a little stairway on each side leading to the platform behind it. Conveyor belts were placed in this room, raised about half Duke's height from the floor level. Small elevators in the side of the room led to little empty sectors just big enough to stand in. After hitting random switches, controlling the belts and lights, the forcefields turned off and i went to the space behind the window. There was a control panel here, as you faced the window, and one of the monitors showed a picture of the crater. Pushing the space bar made this picture change to the old crater with the building in it. This was just a texture on a sloped floor, like the many screen tiles in the game, and I wondered how I'd never noticed such a tile existed in the game. Leaving the control panel I rounded a corner and found another train station, closer in textures to that long, empty track in LameDuke. There was no train, but the door was open, and I somehow knew it was connected to my abuse of the switch on the sothern rail. No switch existed here (no sprites existed in these areas at all), so I walked along the track until I found another opening. Somehow this led to the southern track, but on the opposite side (western wall instead of eastern wall) and so would never be seen from the train when it was open. The door to the airlock area was open and the monsters were gone, but there were distant explosions. All of the sprites in the level were gone, aside from those used to make the corridor look like it had slanted supports, but they weren't blue, they were brown. The airlock area had windows, the building was in the crater, I saw something run behind it in the distance and knew I was heading for some kind of boss that moved much faster than any in the game. I entered the airlock and flipped the switch, but immediately died a message "SPACE SUIT: OFF" appearing at the top of the screen with a broken palette (mostly orange and navy blue). I couldn't get back there and knew it was pointless to look for it in the source, as that was based on 1.4/1.5 and it definitely wouldn't exist in EDuke either.
I tried to upload the video to YouTube, but it wouldn't work for some reason, so I posted the file, but nobody would believe me and they refused to download the several GB file, saying they'd only look if I uploaded it to YouTube or BitchUte, even after I posted stills. I gave up and figured it was a lost cause.
Now if I may be rude and hijack the thread for a moment, a really old dream about a different game I had over 20 years ago that has lead to a small mystery;
#175 Posted 16 August 2020 - 06:21 AM
However, I just had a fairly short one while dozing off so I figure this is as good a point as any to start.
The dream centered on two rooms, which I knew were opposite of each other. I (playing as Duke in some Duke 3D user map) had to go into these two rooms to hit some switches or whatever to progress in the area connecting the two rooms (I never saw this connecting area, nor the switches I was supposed to hit). The first one I entered was the one I knew to be on the left. It was this massive blue chamber filled with, of all things, living room furniture. Couches, lamps, coffee tables, and I think a few television sets (CRT) and stands. It's not like a warehouse where they were all stacked evenly, but they weren't exactly scattered around either. they were laid out like show rooms at furniture stores, all laid out in mockups of typical living room layouts. The only thing is there wasn't anything to separate the showcases from one another, nor was there any sort of rhyme or reason to their layout. these spaces could be right next to each other but facing different ways, some were inside one another (so like two coffee tables would intersect like a T shape, or more commonly, a very lopsided T), and so forth.
Worth noting that the couches weren't typical Build sector geometry, but actual couches. Some even had those embroidered floral patterns. The blue lighting also wasn't the normal dark cyan-ish of Duke 3D but a much darker blue closer to the purple end of the color spectrum. It didn't affect Duke or the aliens, but it was as naturally flat as lighting in these old games could be without the proper care.
As for the chamber itself, it was rectangular, with the entrance orientated to face lengthwise. There was also a ledge that ran around the entire chamber sans the entry wall (in proper Build fashion), about as high up as the RPG secret in Hollywood Holocaust compared to street level, if not a little higher, and slightly wider. There were also these two massive columns about 2/3 of the way into the chamber from the entrance, placed side-by-side with each other with a sizable gap in between (as a side note, I don't think the columns existed until I got to the other side of the chamber and turned around). The floor itself was arranged into very short steps/tiers, with most of the furniture on the "highest" (really only about up to Duke's knee from the lowest) tier. All in all the room's layout looked like a typical Doom slaughtermap arena more than a Duke level. The texturing though, aside from the detailed furniture, was completely flat. Just a solid color reflecting the same dark blue/violet light that blanketed the whole area.
There were naturally some enemies in this room. Some troopers on the ledges, a few sentry drones, I think some enforcers on the floor, and a swarm of about half a dozen protector drones. On the far end of the chamber, above the ledges which I think stopped existing (at least for that wall) were two parallel rectangular alcoves. They had troopers in them too. I hurriedly killed them and jumped(?) into them as the protectors came after me. I turned around to face them (this being about the point that I think the columns magicked themselves into creation), and started to wonder if the Protectors would be able to reach me up here. As I pondered this I started to wake up, regaining consciousness on the conclusion that if they jumped on top of each other of course they could.
This earth-shattering revelation was followed up by instantly dozing off again. Now I was in the other room. This one was also rectangular with a similar orientation, but smaller. This was also a green wireframe room for some reason. That is to say, all the walls, objects, ceiling, and floor were completely black, but marked by a vivid, green, and thick boxy outline. Once again this did not affect Duke or the enemies within. The room's layout seemed to continue the living room theme, but this time there was only a single couch, end table and floor lamp (again, all in thick green wireframe). The size of the room seemed inconsistent. While universally it was smaller than the blue chamber, at first it seemed about the size of a one-room house. After I "unpaused" it suddenly seemed to have gotten bigger, about the size of a basketball court, and I think the furniture grew within.
On the far end of this room, on the left wall was a door (of course in wireframe). I figured this was where I needed to go. For some reason I became apprehensive and paused the game, which somehow brought up the map? While either talking with someone or thinking something over, I don't remember (and very possibly both), I saw five red dots move from the couch and encircle my position. I somehow knew these to be yet more protector drones and when I resumed the game there they were.
I started to fight them just as I woke up.

However, last night I had a Duke related dream and not only Duke Nukem 3D but also a bit of Duke Nukem Manhattan Project. In the Duke3D part of dream, I remember playing a modified version of E2L9 which looked a bit weird and ugly because not only that last room was duplicated but also wierdly shaped (more triangular than rectangular) and when fighting Overlord I was also trying to access that last secret which you access only when entering in that room (it's a bit difficult to access in reality as well, as it took me a few tries to access it but thankfully didn't get killed by Overlord as I carefully dodged rockets and he never ran me over). I don't remember much what happened after that.
Later in dream (or another dream entirely?) about Duke MP, there seemed to be recently released a remastered version of Duke Nukem Manhattan Project done by the VoidPoint developers (at least I remember reading DavoX's name in credits) and I was very excited! But then I got disappointed at one of new features they introduced which was one of the new cheat codes (maybe unlocked after finishing the game?) where you could change Duke into ANY entity in the game! And that made me disappointed and worried (and feeling like it ruined the game) because I DIDN'T want to change Duke into anything else, as cool as it sounds to play as one of the enemies (especially as main villain Mech Morphix, btw there is actually a cool mod I saw a while ago where you play as Mech Morphix, that is pretty interesting), I hated the idea of turning Duke into various other crap that can be found into game. It was a bit similar to the Debug Mode in the Sonic games but instead of acting as an item placement mode, it affected how you play the game. I can't imagine playing as an object or barrel or box or the cars that drive in the Chapter 2 of the game. So that didn't make any sense and wanted to write an angry message/letter to the developers and ask them to remove that cheat/feature from the game. But then the dream ended before that happened.

Of course none of this matters because it isn't real. Though a remake/remaster with some extra bells and whistles sounds awesome (as long as they don't touch the music) so it's probably never gonna happen.

Speaking of Duke MP, I picked up a copy on eBay recently as I no longer had my old one and hope to beat it 100% sometime in future. I will make sure to patch the game to 1.01 this time because it fixes many annoying bugs in the initial version.
As for Wozma, although I beat the game as kid in around 2005 (on all difficulties, because I beat it on Easy first time but then played on Normal and Hard from same save), I was never able to access this secret boss because it was rather well hidden and I only knew of its existence in 2010 or so when I saw it on YouTube first time. I also didn't kill all enemies (as some were missing, due to also using initial version 1.0 which had some minor glitches) and didn't find all secrets, while for nukes I got above the total 240 thanks to that laser glitch in last part of the game with the robot that spawns nukes when you destroy it, save, then reload to make laser reappear and that way I was able to collect more nukes to make up for the fact I had like 4 or so parts where I was missing some nukes. That way I was able to get the rewards for each skill as well (stronger kick, half damage, X-3000). There was a recent topic posted about defeating Wozma boss and I posted in that topic as well. I will show you if you are interested.
On topic: I didn't have any Duke related dreams last night.

Before the FPS gameplay started there was a pinball section (of all things), followed by a rail shooter level. There were also 3D-rendered FMV cutscenes. The setting was a bit different, with similar geometry but more LameDuke-styled cyberpunkish skyscrapers.
The engine was a bit more advanced - still blocky but with vertical differences, like Doom or early Build games. There were also some sections that had Killer Instinct-style pre-rendered textures for extra detail that wasn't possible with geometry, that animated when the played moved to simulate perspective.
The whole thing ran pretty poorly in DOSBox though, and there were lots of visual glitches and hall-of-mirror stuff with the more complex areas.
There were some clearly unfinished level sections that had been repurposed as secret areas, and there were also secret weapons like a shotgun.
There was a mall level, with a toy store with tons of shelves with action figures (blocks with photosourced textures). and an arcade section with a couple Neo Geo arcade cabinets, and I was impressed with the texture resolution. I also think there was a level with a building on fire.
