Undertale "An RPG where nobody has to die."
#1 Posted 15 December 2015 - 10:17 AM
Has anyone heard of this RPG game called Undertale? It's like Earthbound except you chose to slay or befriend monsters. It got alot of buzz and praise by critics. It's also becoming number 1 on GameFAQS Best Game of all time.
Give it a shot. I'll be getting this when it becomes on sale.

I was gonna make a thread about this game but I thought the obtuse 12-year-old GameFAQs mentality would just lead to everyone going UHHH THIS GAME IS KIDDY BULLSHIT NOT FUNNY MEME FEMINISM news at 11.
It's an actually very good game that deserves every accolade it gets. sure, it's not the prettiest game, but it more than makes up for it in music, gameplay, replayability, and an actually meaningful and complexly laid out story and writing. almost every single part of it is very deliberate and makes sense the further in you get, and some stuff is left for you to reach your own conclusions, like certain shared visual motifs that come along as the game. A FUCKING CHANGE IN DECIMAL POINT ACTUALLY MADE ME EMOTIONAL, I'll say that much.

My favorite game of 2015 and possibly one of my favorite indie games of all time. Proves that you can do something unique and weird and still become successful. A breath of fresh air.

I haven't even played it yet, and I adore it.
Dat soundtrack especially.

Man, just post it anyway... there are MANY people who read here that never post or join because of said 12-year-old mentality. I used to read on many forums, but seldom joined any of them because of the lack of structure and maturity, but they still provided a lot of information. Just look at all the views relative to the number of posts in most all the threads.
I understand what you mean, but the people who are not "connected" as members just filter the comments out and enjoy the information with disregard to said mentality. I joined years ago, and I still filter it out.

So next time, post it anyway if you don't mind... I like Kiddy BS Not Funny Meme Feminism news at 11 type stuff sometimes...

I play kiddy BS every day, if I am lucky. Besides, real gamers can play GTA and Pokemon back to back without issue. <insert Team American Theme song here>

I've actually avoided this game because it was an indie RPG and hipsters like it. Now I want to play it, but I still have one question left before I do so...
How's the combat system, and how JRPG like are the gameplay mechanics? If this plays like a JRPG, no dice. Shittiest genre ever. I don't care how good the story is - it has to be delivered in a well designed vessel.
Don't even want to know for that one. I've only ever cried at the "Green"/Liara ending to Mass Effect 3 and the Fatima scene from Anachronox.
Because those were genuinely fucked up.

The combat system is like a scrolling shooter during enemy phase, the only difference is you don't shoot back. (except a certain boss fight) on your phase you have a shitload of options, but actually directly attacking is a timed hit thing to get maximum damage. Fights are lightening fast, engaging, and the named characters and bosses will directly interact with you during fights, as well as directly control the screenspace and do some really nuts things. It's as far and away from JRPG combat as it can get.

I've played this. I thought it was good, but i don't feel like it should be on a "Best Game of all time" list like some people insist.

I think what gets me and most other people so into it is the fact that it's a very light-hearted story that expresses towards a very happy (and also incredibly grim one depending what you do) sentiment, which has been totally lost in recent years. Games these days are all about grey area bullshit where you might not be doing the right thing, sudden twists and turns and everybody dies around you and ughghghghghhh. This stuff is so predictable I could name the plot of the next 5 games, and all the grim stuff is explicitly shock value with no merit or form to it.
I like that the game is unabashedly happy, and wants you to make everyone else in the game happy too. If you don't, the game legit makes you feel like shit for (suprise suprise) actually being the bad guy. (and that path goes literally all the way if you really want to.)

I know I posted this in the music thread already, but it's worth a listen, it's a fan-made remix of the song Megalovania from Undertale, in the style of the Sega Genesis:

(This is in GZDoom, and I'm too lazy to fully recreate the little demo map you have there, I only did this for fun
