Rare & Expensive Video Games.  "Do you own any?"

#1

LIST UPDATED: 8/14/2015

According to this CNN article. Your old video game can be worth $12,000.

http://money.cnn.com...l&iid=obnetwork

So what old video games do you own that are rare. Have you sold any for a shitload of cash?

Here's the video games that I own that are rare in physical copy.

  • Mega Man V for GameBoy (selling this one for $165 bucks I think)
  • Conker's Bad Fur Day for N64
  • Castlevania Bloodlines for Genesis. (Haven't put it up on Amazon yet. I think Viper will be pissed at me if I try to sell it! :D)
  • A sealed copy of Greatest Hits version of PSX Doom. (Selling this one for $170)
  • Two copies of Powerslave for the PS1
  • Jazz Jackrabbit CD-ROM edition w/ the extra episodes. (I'm NOT getting rid of this one! Good thing I made an ISO backup of this one! Now if Epic Games would get off their asses and rerelease this on Steam and GOG along w/ the other classic Epic Megagames stuff.)
  • An open box of Killer Instinct SNES w/ the shrinkwrap, cart, manual, paperwork and Killer Cuts CD. (Does this count?)
  • Metroid Prime Tilogy for the Wii
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for 3DS
  • Descent II: Infinite Abyss
  • Castlevania Chronicles for PS1. (Selling it for $78)
  • Redneck Rampage: Family Reunion
  • A sealed copy of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword w/ music CD
  • Super Mario All Stars - Limited Edition for the Wii
  • A sealed copy of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker for Wii U: (Not yet rare but will be in a few years from now.)

So do you got any rare physical video games that you own?

The most valued video game in my possession is, of course, my big box copy of The War In Heaven, the classic Christian-based first person shooter:

Come to think of it, in my quest add ironic titles to my collection, I forgot to collect any games that are actually valuable. Oh...

Basically all of my games are priceless to me... :D
But seriously, when I saw this thread I looked around the room a bit and even opened a few boxes... but nothing jumps out at me. Though some did cost more than others, most of my games are not valuable at all, not matter how obscure they might be.

I might ask the question what is the game in someones collection they believe the fewest people would know of. :D

I have sealed Duke Nukem 3D Shareware and Duke Nukem 3D Screensaver and Entertainment Pack boxes that are worth a bit.

I've updated my list above. Here's the pics of some of the rare items I was talking a/b.

EDIT: I've bought the new & sealed PS1 Doom for $36 on Amazon.com. I'm such a lucky fuck!

Not sure about all of these. Bloodlines is 20€ second hand, Metroid Prime is 40€ retail, Chronicles is 10€ retail. The European version of Exhumed PSX is abundant too.

Talk about a "Rare" game... :D

As for me, I used to own a mint-condition copy of Half Life for the Dreamcast, but I'm pretty sure it got either lost or stolen. :D Maybe it'll turn up one of these days and surprise me.

Maybe it's an USA thing of why they are so rare in America. Probably got outnumbered by shovelware?

Depends what you mean by "expensive". I have between 10 and 20 games that go for 30-50 bucks.

As for "rare", I don't know if this counts by I own a copy of Journey To Silius - Anarchy Edition. It's a rare romhack that was never released as a rom and only a dozen copies were made by its author. So, it doesn't exactly count.

I used to have boxed copies of Resident Evil 2 on PC and Duke's Caribbean Life. They were trophies standing on a joist in my old bedroom at my parents. My mom trashed both when I moved out.

I think the intrinsic issue is that rarity has nothing to do with price, which is just controlled by demand and availability (on the market, not overall).

There's not a lot of games I actually play. Duke - obviously - Doom, Keen & Cosmo, Postal 2 (mindless - love it!) and Serious Sam I & II.

I've no idea if the stuff in attached picture is worth a penny, maybe others will know. But effectively they have no monetary value since I've no intention of disposing of them (though any lurking millionaire with a hole burning in their pockets should feel free to make an offer :D ).

Never thought of games being collectable, but I guess it is logically for anything once its time has passed and most examples have long hit the trash. One thing's for sure, they'd take up a damn site less room than my collecting weaknesses.

Totally agree.

Here's part 2 of my rare video game collection pics.

According to TV Tropes' : Keep Circulatiing The Tapes/Video Games. The Descent II: Infinite Abyss & Descent 1 & 2: The Definitive Collection has the Vertigo Expansion pack while the GOG.com and (I think) Steam does not. Due to legal reasons I've heard.

Oh and I found out that Wolfenstien 2009 is also on the list too. I got both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 ports of that game. Doom 64 is on that list too but fortunately at a reasonable price.

Also check out the works that have been rescued in rights limbo while you're at it!

Not really. My PC games are very narrow in scope... almost completely comprised of 90's/Pre WinXP, First Person Shooters and their add-ons and shovelware. Those are around 340 unique boxed games, plus a dozen or so that were never offered boxed. I doubt I have 20 boxed PC games outside of those. I do have maybe 1000 console/Handheld games, but none of those are rare that I know of, and very few of those are "new", so nothing of value to speak of.
Or maybe I should just say that if I do have something rare that IS of value, I don't know about it, and I never sought out any game that was expensive for any purpose other than to get to play it. :D

I am looking through my lists though...

I see a few of these on eBay every week. The PC version I consider quite rare though.

How's the RR Early Years and Possum Bayou like? And I think you forgot a/b Redneck Deer Huntin. You should have that in your collection MrBlackCat. Maybe it's the box w/ the rear showing?

The more time passes by, the more expensive the game gets. Powerslave is currently going through this phase.

It's just the mass media with their usual BS, these games aren't that expensive. Don't be an idiot and believe everything you see on the news in fact at this point just ignore the news for the most part.

I spoke with Jedi Questmaster (hack creator) on IRC several years ago and he actually sent me the IPS patch for it. I'm hoping that it's still on my backup HD.

Well I'll be damned! I wouldn't upload it anywhere without his consent though. IIRC he said he wanted it to be a prize just for a contest back then.

Here is the cart (old crappy picture sorry)
http://i101.photobuc...her/Image20.jpg

I love Journey To Silius. I have the NTSC-U release CIB, the Famicom release CIB, a loose pirate famicom cart of it, and this romhack. Oh and I also have that other more recent romhack of it on my Everdrive but that counts even less.

It's one of my favorite NES games, too. Still enjoy listening to its music, holy crap.

I played several hacks of it as well, besides the Anarchy Edition. There are a few translated to Chinese, a Lomax hack and a hack called softcore... yeah.

Somebody I spoke to in the past owns the Japanese, North American and both PAL releases of Journey to Silius, all CIB. He also has a prototype of the PAL version. In terms of official items, that has to the most definitive JTS collection yet.

Eh, to be on-topic. Currently I have a few disc betas that go for a few hundred each; had a few cart protos of $1000. If those don't count, I guess my sealed Doom 64 is of the highest value.

Yeah I love the music too, Sunsoft' bass sound is excellent. You can hear it too in Gremlins 2 and in Gimmick.

honestly I don't know why I love the game so much and why I was so obsessed with it. It's a game I really like but it's got its share of flaws, too.

I had no idea there were so many hacks or there was 2 different PAL releases unless you mean PAL A and PAL B (there might even be a SECAM release? I've never seen this game around here so I doubt it).

Yeah the PAL A and PAL B variants. Even that little detail matters to some people, heh. IMO it makes their collection more impressive. I don't think there's a SECAM release, though.

For me, there's just something about how the game was designed that makes it work so well. Perhaps that it's a lot like Mega Man, with a touch of run-n-gun like Contra. I thought the challenge was pretty up the NES alley as well.

Ok, thanks...
Edit: I noticed this site rather boldly states "every" video game... for the first 20~25 I attempted to look up, it doesn't list 10 of them. Hehehe
Actually I also keep the similar data since the late 90's from eBay and Amazon, but only for a couple hundred PC First Person Shooters and their add-ons. Still, some checking shows about the same, and I might miss a few, but I did all mine manually into a spreadsheet.
Is a fairly useful site, but I still don't care much for absolutes like "every"... is unlikely one source can be that complete.

They are both kind of like Shareware in that they are not full games, but a few levels each from Redneck Rampage. I don't know what they could be called other than exploitation. Maybe they were "cheap" back then or something, like economy versions? I don't remember. I don't know about the multi-player levels, but each games levels are from Redneck Rampage. One is just the first part of Redneck Rampage like five or six levels. The other is similar I think. I might not have played both of them though. I had one way back, and got the other later.

The box with the rear facing forward is a second Large Box Family Reunion. If I have duplicates, I display the backs like that, or if they open I display them like that for example. :D
The smaller Family Reunion is on the glass above those.
I do have Redneck Deer Huntin', but I keep it with some other Deer Hunting games. This is mostly from the rather large "Deer Hunter" series. There are a few strays in there, like GameBoy Color Deer Hunter, the Deer Avenger series and a couple of other deer hunting games. First Person Shooters you know. :D

Redneck Deer Huntin' is on the lower right minus one position. :D

Is that your collection there and is that the game that is sometimes in the movies? Just wondering I see some (maybe) even more interesting things at the bottom of the screen N64 and Snes I wonder what is there give me it :D

I don't know about rare and expensive but I kind of like whats on this thread its like classic collections in a way...

Well here is the rarest games I have in box I have some other stuff but there loose you know for snes DK Country and Mario stuff. Most of my stuff was lost, I moved a hole lot as a kid and even once we didn't meet rent so all stuff was put outside one day and the scavengers took it away probably when I was like 11.
I re sized the pics smaller though

Inside of these I have everything that came with the boxes manuals/posters etc etc.
