[RELEASE] Death Drive Episode  "Thou shall bring death or thou shall perish"

#31

You can remove them: these demos were supposed to be Half-Life like backgrounds in the main menu which looked really neat.

finally got to complete this episode.

unfortunately I had to cheat my way out of map 4 using DNMONSTERS for the last third or the map, not due to what would be the inherent difficulty of the map (it all started off really well with a reasonably progressive onslaught, everything was nicely implemented) but after a while I got too confident and gave into some non-stop-action frenzy, jumping everywhere from cliff to cliff, enjoying the unlinearity of the layout yet getting spotted by monsters everywhere and triggering all the respawns... which culminated with a bad save to top my game off just before I got to the last keycard... didn't feel like going through hell again with no guns so I just said fuck it and cheated in order to get back to the alien portal. despite this flawed behavior on my hand (which I will make sure to fix by replaying the map properly at some point I am pretty sure), exploring this map was lots of fun, lots of nooks and crannies and platforming action, being able to climb everywhere in no real order (although that can also work against you like it did for me) makes one feel like there is no definitely set route to go through the level, resulting in a relative feeling of freedom which was a treat.

map 5 was quick and a good way to end the episode, although with so many baddies in the last room the main one didn't stand a chance... almost sure the boss got as many hits - if not more - from pig tank projectiles than it did from my bullets. not a bad thing though, battle itself was pure havoc and the best way to put this slaughterfest to an end I think.

congrats on releasing this episode, it was really fun to play albeit a little draining in terms of personal energy due to always having you to be on the look out for the next intense wave of enemies at every corner (step ?) and all. now I really like this type of gameplay in moderation (your "Slaughterfest" is one of my all-time favorite maps) but here I feel like maybe it got a little too repetitive at times, and might have hindered the progression on quite a few occasions. 5 maps in a row with such a hardcore pace was a little too much for me... maybe some of them would have benefitted from a few 'empty' moments every once in a while, just to bring the mood down before it suddenly picks up again... I understand it's what you were trying to do with map 3 as a whole already though... juggling with alternative types of gameplay can be hard, especially throughout a sequence of several levels. I am no stranger to the type of work and fine-tuning it takes so once again kudos and looking forward to playing your upcoming stuff

Hello,

Thanks for the release. I have just finish playing the episode in 3rd difficulty, it was a hard, die & retry one. I had to save a lot (even during the last boss fight ^^).
I find the level design clever in the first four maps. The mapping is simple but efficient I think. I just don't appreciate the feeling of "replaying" episode 1 of DN3D (streets map then prison, the fourth map ambiance was a relief).
The game-play was sometimes very frustrating : to few ammo or life left (drink a lot of water^^); sometimes I even had to kick some baddies to death before getting a few bullets (or shrinker ammo :D). I really needed to use bad guys shooting each others or even luring Assault Commanders around crates to get them doing self damage while firing rockets.
I had to save -> explore a bit -> die a lot -> find a way to kill horde of enemies -> die a lot trying to do it -> I can save again !

I enjoy playing the first four maps, my favourite was the second one, I appreciated a lot running around the yellow locked building to lure the enemies. I believe the shrinker map was a good try. I think I have played at least one hour or more each maps except the last one.

A few remarks to finish :
- I have found the last level absolutely not interesting : running in circle, trying to grab atomic health and steroid, and hoping bad guys slaughters each others (I have only fired a few rockets and ice shards on the boss), I don't like that.
- Random death when jumping in the last pit of the Rage Pit, as someone stated previously.
- Are you serious about the pig cop tanks ? In the Misery Cliff there are to much of them I think.

Bye,

DotK3D

I have tried this episode a long time ago...
It was large and challenging and I'm surprised the maps needed less than 20 hours each to be designed because the result is good.
I just agree with DotK3D the final level (only that one) wasn't interesting but... the other maps were very enjoyable.

Hey there! Big thanks to everyboy who played this episode! I'm really happy with how it turned out since it seems like people mostly enjoy it, though I agree about last map being a letdown.

Oh, I'm going to fix the Rage Pit issue very soon as well as a few other bugs like missing textures and etc. And what's wrong with pig tanks? I like them, they can bring some pain :D

EDIT: I forgot to ask but what's with the demos at startup? The player just sits there and doesn't do anything.
EDIT 2: I didn't know there was a secret map, I'm playing now through user maps menu!
EDIT 3: It seems map is unfinished, I was stuck at yellow room (after area with crushers) but I didn't realize that map isn't finished. Hope you will finish it soon!

Those demos supposed to be just menu backgrounds setting up the atmosphere. You see dead Nukem's body and the "YOU'RE DEAD MEAT" text popping out and you know you're going to be walking knee deep in blood. Well, at least it feels like that to me.
Oh, somebody found the unfinished secret level! You see, I was playing some obscure arcade games and thought it would be fun to make something like that in DN3D, but upon making this I realized it breaks the pacing of the game, so I dropped the level. Might finish it sometime. I thought of it as the only way to get an RPG before boss fight.
Surprised you've made it through without dying! I tend to die on Misery Cliff most of the time, but I do believe it's possible.

I've made videos of me playing through the episode without dying once on a single map and showing every secret. Right now I've uploaded only first two levels, but soon I will upload the rest and update the episode.

Mister Sinister has sent me a fixed version of T1M5 "The Rage Pit" to address the issue of the pit teleporter randomly killing the player. While this is meant to be included with an upcoming update for the addon compilation, I don't see why it shouldn't be posted for everybody here before since people had reported the issue, but it hadn't been officially addressed until now.

Thanks to Mister Sinister for finally taking care of this annoyance! :P

I finally got around to playing this and it's very, very good. While I'm not playing it quite as intended, it's a great episode with excellent gameplay and construction (especially given the short development time). Anyone who planned to play this and forgot about it, or just joined recently so didn't know about it, should give it a try. So far I'm on map 4 -- I got overwhelmed by respawns and died but I will probably resume tomorrow. I agree with what others have said about the shrinker level being easier than the others, but that's not a big flaw. I was surprised that there wasn't a shrinker mirror puzzle, though (maybe there was in a secret I missed).
