Download textures for steam release here

Hello everyone. It's been a long time since I've made something for Duke 3D. A few months ago my friend introduced to me a game called Minecraft and I really liked it. I decided, why not make a Minecraft themed map?

Duke Craft is a combination of DN3D mechanics and Minecraft-like level design. The story is simple - aliens stole Duke's hard earned diamonds and he has to get them back. The map includes some features taken from Minecraft, like crafting or using torches to light the areas. No additional code or sounds were used, only new textures. Don't play it with polymer or else it'll screw up some of the graphics.

So, hope you'll like it! Non-minecraft players will probably enjoy the map as well. It contains some tips for players who's not familiar with Minecraft mechanics.

It's certainly an interesting concept. The textures, unique geometry and minecraft-oriented progression leads to a fresh experience. You did a good job portraying the minecraft world in Duke, since it actually feels like you're fighting the aliens but within the minecraft game (not that I've every played minecraft), and it works surprisingly well.

I had to look up in mapster where the third rock in the starting area was since I was having trouble, and wow the textures look crappy in the standard duke palate! Didn't realize you were using a new palate for the textures until then, and the world looks very vibrant.
The insta-kill lava also seems a touch unfair, mostly due to the strange way Duke's clipping works, where you think you're not in the sector but it teleports and kills you anyway. It also occasionally teleported you when jumping over it.
Spoiler

Other than that it was a solid map and I encourage people to try it out, whether you've played minecraft or not.

Btw Eddy I'm guessing you used mapster script to shade the perpendicular walls of the map?

I feel the music does not match the map at all.
So for those that a looking for more of a "Minecraft" feel, just put this track into the main folder.

Yeah the track does not match at all. I was honestly expecting Minecraft music.

But the map is great! Really enjoying it!

Finished the map with all the secrets.
I liked how you hid them.

It's actualy done manually. I guess I could've made things easier and use the script, but I didn't knew about it.

Oh well, I thought it fits. Will replace the track today.

Edit: Track replaced, download link updated.

Just played it, really enjoyed it and it's neat to see how you integrated Minecraft elements and stuff (love the ending button bit!)

This was pretty good!

Took me a little while to figure out what to do in the first area, but that was because you need to crouch to press use on the box that gives you the card once you picked up the crystals.... At first I pressed used on it, several times, but without crouching and nothing happened so I kept looking everywhere thinking I may have missed another crystal...

Also like Micky C said, the room with the lava can be glitchy. One toe above it, even if the rest of your body is on the ground, and you're done for... But except from that it was really good, though I've never played Minecraft.

You need to pick up three ingredients to craft the item. Should be working without having to crouch, at least in the last version of EDuke32.

Yeah I didn't have to crouch.

If you are going to do an update, perhaps create a child sector in the lava sectors that's very slightly smaller than the original lava sectors, and use the slightly smaller one as the teleport; that way it should give the player some room to move, but it should still kill the player if he actually does fall into the laval.

Btw I only ask about the shading and the mapster script because the shading was so flawless and consistent that I'd assumed you'd created your own shading script. That's within the realm of possibility since everything in the map is perpendicular (both walls and floors/ceilings) therefore such a script would have been much simpler and easier to code than Fox's, plus I'm aware you made heavy use of mapster script in previous projects.

Is there any way I can upload this map on steam? I tried and Megaton Edition didn't load tiles correctly. Maybe it's because it uses zip. I'd really love to share this map on steam, since it's not using new code.

I never used mapster scripts. The only script I'm using is from LeBuild, and it replaces the textures on the map.

Other than that, everything's done manually :(

I don't think the workshop supports custom arts. At least, not directly. Which means taht if you upload it there, you'll have to put instructions on how to play it with the textures (take the tiles.art file from the rar downloaded through the workshop and put it in the rootfolder? That should be enough).
You can expect dozens of msgs of people telling you there is no textures or they can't get it to work no matter how detailed your installation instruction is.

Edit : also make sure that your map plays flawlessly in megaton, some things can behave differently between eduke32 and megaton

Eddy I could have sworn you said you used some mapster script with The Stairwell?

Btw IIRC Drek managed to get some WGR2 textures into Megaton with our Knee Deep addon.

Nope! Just copy and paste function.

gave the map a go
never played minecraft
enjoyed the atmosphere (it's reminisce of your Sonic project and retro late 80's console games)
solid design and well put together
game play was quite enjoyable between the puzzles and the alien encounters.

had some issues like MetHy in regards to having to crouch to grab some items, but only a couple were this way
had a save game bug - the spot where the player has to collect two items to make a blue key - it wouldn't let me pick up the items at all - a reload of the same save file fixed it though. just a heads up.

overall it was pretty fun

I am surprised at how many people haven't played Minecraft on these forums, its the 3rd best selling game in the world across all platforms (beaten by Tetris and Wii Sports wtf?) but number one on PC.

I'll have to give this a play at some point.

As far as never having played minecraft. I watch the RT/AH guys mess around in minecraft. I don't really think i'd have a good time with it unless I had a good close group of friends to play with.

Minecraft is either the kind of game that you play and say "oh, that's kinda neat I guess" and never touch it again...or the game that absolutely utterly fucking devours your life for days on end (especially with the tech mods) I think it's a mistake to watch people play first, since it's really the kind of thing best experienced first hand.

I fall into the latter category, so the map was really neat for me to play.

Same thing here. I didn't want to play the game until my friend asked me to play it, and I didn't regret. Very addictive stuff.

Watching it and playing it are two very different things. You don't get what it's actually like by watching so you can't judge whether you like it or not by that alone.

tilefromtexture works + old school art files :(

edit: read the whole thread. Megaton can run these things, but there is no workshop support for any modifications.

Finally had time to finish the map. But word of warning, saving doesn't work on this map as it renders Minecraft items that you must "use" unuseable.

I know. I was confirming the issue. However, reloading never worked for me. I had to start over and play straight through.

The first time it happened I had saved and reloaded. I couldn't pick up the lapis or paper items to make the keycard after the first Battlelord. The second time it happened I hadn't reloaded at all, just saved and I couldn't pick up the diamond pickaxe. Reloaded countless times. Didn't help.

i only saved once because i had to leave. I came back, started the game, loaded, couldn't pick up anything, reloaded, and everything worked fine.

i wonder if it's a snapshot issue. i'm still using r4525

I saved when I got to the lava and the mini boss, I did reload a couple times and it worked fine for me.
