Does Remedy have an office where just the tiling of the lobby alone was reputed to have cost tens of thousands of dollars?
Reading about that concerned me even back then, as it reminded me so much of ION Storm's palace.
Oh well, at least they were able to put it to use for a good last picture.

Even if he gets a new job immediately, he has to pay for COBRA coverage (102% of total premium cost) to continue his family's medical/dental, assuming both that 3DR is required to arrange that, and that they have sufficient capital to administrate that for 18-36 months. Otherwise, it's usually a 45-90 day wait to get medical/dental coverage with a new job, and as the American healthcare system is so employer-centric, it can be dificult, prohibitively expensive, or in some cases, outright impossible, for an individual to purchase medical/dental coverage outside of a COBRA or other employer framework.

I bought Prey Collectors Ed. for $19.99, and it's a great game. I wish it had sold more, but it was announced in 1995 and got released in 2007. That's 12 years in development, which coincides with Duke Nukem 4 Ever development time. I think Duke 4 ever might have had the same fate even if it had been released now. The problem is that 12 years is a ridiculous time to make a game.
As for development time, here's where 3d Realms should have followed in Id Software's footsteps:
Id Software's new game Rage was announced in 2007 but has been in development since Doom 3. Doom 3 first announcement was in 2000, at the Macworld Expo (along with the Geforce 3). Doom came out in 2004, Rage will probably come out in 2010. I'd wish 3d Realms would have followed this model. Release Duke Nukem 4 Ever in 2001, then another in 2005 and 2009. In those years develop other IP's so that they are no beholden to just 1 IP.

What about Shadow Warrior?
I agree with you, it's all about the choices you make. 3DR didn't make "Mistakes" per se they just chose to do things differently. John Carmack makes compromises all the time with his games. Just look at DooM and Quake, they both got changed because of technology and timeframe. IIRC Quake was taking too long with development or something and John just said, we'll make it like DooM a shooter and call it a day.
That would have been a better development cycle as you suggested, MrSunshines. Release 2001 Duke, then a sequel and then a sequel. Then they could have polished the engine and improved over time, etc. But none of that matters. Now.

They tried and we can give them a hell of a lot of credit for trying.

As such, Duke3D would be one of the few games (and the last game) that was entirely in-house. Many of the "Classic" games were produced/published by Apogee, but developed outside.
Prey was a huge pile of money in the negative column until it was outsourced to Human Head. Again, no idea how the revenue would be split on that one. If they wrote off the in-house Prey as a loss in 2000 (or whatever year it was put "on hold"), the numbers when Prey actually shipped would look better, as they wouldn't have to overcome that earlier negative number.
Although 3DR likely took in a lot of money in the early days of Max Payne, they ultimately sold that property. That would probably cut them off from any further revenue from MP1, and give them only producer's revenue (rather than IP owner's revenue) for MP2.
They would then pretty much be dependent on the wise management of the monies received from the Max Payne and Godgames sales. Once that money dropped below the "critical mass" needed to generate income without cannibalizing the principal, they would be burning cash, and the drop-dead date could then be determined by cash minus a set-aside for wind-down costs divided by monthly expenses to determine how many months of operation remained.

That picture pisses me off so much
It's like. Really? You're gonna show off that in your portfolio? A box with a pretty good (but not very impressive) entrance to it?
There's not even a window texture on the building, its just concrete tile.
The textures are really nice however. I especially for some reason like the road.
The trees though. You can see 6 of them in the front on the left, 4 of which are the exact same one, and the other 2 are the same as eachother, but are also just seemingly a short wider version of the other trees.
I'll let the fact go theres that blue fog not showing the rest of Vegas, because I'd like to assume it's because he only wanted to use content he made (worst case scenario, THERE ISN'T AN ACTUAL VEGAS SKYBOX)
I think the biggest thing though, aside from the bland building itself, is the brushwork. The arches look really smooth, but everything else is so... boxy and right-angle-ish. It's just like, I feel if I ran my hand around it, they'd cut straight open from all the sharp edges.
Not even going to talk about the EDF HQ, which looks very overly generic.
God. I used to think "They've been working on it, and it'll look great if it's ever shown." But now, I'm actually starting to BELIEVE that they didn't work all too much and just kinda hungout these past few years, making some mock stuff.
Please, someone reply to this and knock some sense into me.

I really liked how the dam was turning out, which I think were the most latest screens anyway.
#731 Posted 09 May 2009 - 12:41 AM
Honestly, the infestation was FROM the original Duke, I think even in the original Duke Nukem I?
All you have to do is add in Slimer Eggs and an Octabrain in the scene and it'll basically be 100% Duke.

the positive thing is that "game developer" is not a proffession set in stone... "Game developers" are usually skilled programmers, designers etc... they can find work in other fields, other than developing games.

The octaking, the Cycloid Emperor... Wtf?
Also, Isaac posting "3DR=Awesome"
Not even an oficial statement from George or Scott... Not even unofficial statement!
Don't know, it's a bit fishy... Please, I know it's denial, but I don't want it to be finished... It's too sad.

We can most likely expect a press release on Monday or Tuesday. If not then... well, no idea.

I would most certainly buy a book on the development of DNF and how 3DR went under etc, but I don't expect it, nor do I think I deserve it as a fan of the company since I started playing games in the mid 90s.

Unless the press release says that there's still hope for the game, it will be a worthless statement that will just re-state what we already know: George and Scott don't give a fuck and they destroyed the company. George didn't even give enough of a shit to stop posting about unrelated shit on Twitter, or to pry himself from his fucking plasma screen tv or Hummer or Geometry Wars. Then, after sitting on his ass while the company's reserves run out, he lovingly fires the people who have worked for him for all those years.

Coincidence or on purpose?
Plus missing art?
My conspiracy theory cauldron is boiling over.
