3D Realms Shutting Down

#451

Things that can happen in this kind of economy:
  • Local bank holding 3DR's line of credit fails. Other banks have locked down their lending. 3DR can't get a new credit line. 3DR closes.
  • 3DR's stock portfolio (not stock in 3DR, stock in other corporations held by 3DR for capital appreciation and/or dividend income) takes a 50% haircut in the market meltdown. Dividends are cut or suspended. Interest rates on money market and CDs for their short-term capital drop to almost nothing. Given the choice of burning their remaining capital or closing, 3DR closes.
  • 3DR gets a "going concern" notice from its auditor. Credit line is withdrawn or interest rate is jacked up. 3DR closes.

I've been thinking. For some reason I thought it was the end of Duke as I knew it. But since Apogee is still making and releasing Duke Nukem games it's not quite as bad as I thought it was. What's the 5mil for again? That's how much they need to finish development? or were they trying to buy back whatever rights they sold to Take2 with DNF and are 5 mil short so are dropping DNF and the company for whatever ultimate purpose...

sup Budskee?

Hopefully we'll get an official statement in a day or two. I doubt George will update his twitter. Most likely dealing with a bunch of shit hitting the fan.

I bet the people who worked at 3DR are awfully pissed off.
George would be the most pissed off. Working on a game for 12 years only to have his company shut down.

We don't know why 3DR closed. It isn't immediately because of money because they seem to have enough to close and be safe, but some part of me believes they are closing because DNF has taken so long at that it is finally *gasp* done. All of their DNF staff is no longer needed and George or someone decided to end the company before Duke 5.

DNF would be the last thing they would put out and it would mark the end of an era for 3d realms.

I'd like to believe that Floodge

I really would

But the way it happened, and how people were still going to work but were told they were shutting down, doesn't sound like a "Yeah, since we finished the game, we're closing down, alright?" and everyone's fine with it.

It's more of a "Yeah, we're not going to finish it and we're on a fast downhill spiral... GG"

Also, who would support the game if it was released? Surely, not even DNF would be bug-free. What if there's game breaking stuff they didn't get to fix, or even notice? What if its incompatible with certain computers? And what about extra content?

It sounds like it'd be awesome to get the news tomorrow with "Yes, 3DRealms has been shutdown... but to avail. YES, IT'S DONE"

But really, where would the support be post-launch?

Well, maybe they all now and are keeping quiet? I just can't face the facts. Playing DNF was one of my lifes dreams, and now it seems shattered. I wish the news post will bring some good news. WID

I wouldn't worry too much about the state of DNF. They wouldn't completely give up on it after all this time. Just wait and see. :P

(oh, and first post here!)

Obviously Duke Nukem Forever will have a... erm, 'Delay'. But think about it this way.

The current team hasn't finished it in 12 years.

If a new team, even if its a completely new staff and not one single 3DR guy returns, they can finish what was started and actually release the game, so we may ACTUALLY get the game sooner than if it stayed at 3DR.

Joe Siegler:
"Of the staff that was here when this happened, nobody wanted to leave. They wanted to stay. Some even offered to work for free. The devs here have other priorities than stabbing the company in the back like that going out the door."
http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/showpost.php...p;postcount=852

Though, it was several hours ago. So, maybe you've read that already.

Not to be a smart ass.

But they should wait 12 years to do a press release and post it April 1st.

Lotan, If you ask me I would say that they are very faithful to the company.
Something HAS to be done to save the company.

There has to be some way.

from this Joes post (check Lotans link to see the whole post) i can conclude that it really is over... No smart move to move the assets or something, the thing really got shut down and we propably never see DNF.

I hope that someone recorded an ingame video to show off how DNF plays in its current build. If nothing else then at least a vid of what we will be missing

If nothing, they should get a book published on the history of DNF. With all the details.
Actually, this would be cool regardless of if it's coming out ever or not.

More fishy stuff surrounding 3DRealms' shut down. It's Jeremy Soule's turn.

http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseact...logId=487643040

It looks he hasn't been contacted about it. If my thoughs are correct, then he would have gotten in touch INMEDIATELY with 3DR to see what the hell was going on.

If he had received confirmation that all was going to hell, he just would have posted in his blog that his work in DNF was over.

Just my two cents, and I know it's denial.

But it's just what I wish, and what I hope for.

And hope it's the last thing to loose.

Uhh, Charlie talked to guys at 3DR if that means anything to counter what you said about this guy not contacting them.
