Get a set of used Paradigm Atoms off eBay for $100 (Get the v.3's or above).
Buy a used stereo receiver for $50-100.
Buy a premium 1/8" to RCA cable off Monoprice for $3. Or better yet, run digital audio if your receiver has it.
It will dominate any crappy off the shelf speaker system.
If you can't swing the Paradigms, get something cheaper.

If I could afford Paradigms, I'd already have a set. I was hoping for something in the $30 - $80 range that won't break in 5 years.

in that price range you're going to be dealing mainly with creative & logitech
