Heretic.map for Shadow Warrior.

Single Play and Wangbang

Created by: Robman

April 1 2014 (yes, released on April fools day, heh)

Build time: 1 week

This is a Full conversion of the Heretic map E1M1 for Shadow Warrior.

-I've even included the original midi which can be used aswell.
To use the midi file in SWP just put He1m1.mid into the music folder and then select the midi in the menu when launching the map.

-The map is built upon the brightness level of 6. If you want it super dark, play it on 1 for the blind creepy factor. I play SWP on brightness 7 and DOS, 5.

How this particular map came into creation:
1: Used a wad2map conversion tool that converts the heretic E1M1 map into a duke3d map.

2: Most functions get converted over well for duke3d and the map is almost playable out of the gate, if you wanted to play a duke version, but we want SHADOW WARRIOR! So I then take the duke3d E1M1 and used Mapster to resize the entire map to be suitable for Sw.

3: Now, using a Duke2Sw map conversion tool I converted the map so it will launch properly in the Sw build editor. Nothing carries over from duke to sw in the conversion except the pure architecture of the map.

4: Now the long process of redoing the shading, textures, sounds, start points, functions, effects.. EVERYTHING. I got to a point where I reached a good enough (for my tastes) level of 1:1 conversion in relation to the original Heretic E1M1 and then my imagination kept going, adding some cool things and stretching out the gameplay of the map.

5: Steps 1-3 took minutes.. step 4 took a week, lol.

Be sure to have your 3dsprites (voxel sprites) turned on!

Best played with SWP, the hi-res pack is nice, but messes up the enemy palettes.

Hey, just played the map using Redux. I enjoyed it, I haven't played Heretic in AGES so I didn't even recognize the level, but it's always good to have a good SW usermap to chew on (I'd love to build one myself, actually).

The deathtrap in the dark corridor before the end was bullshit though, and I wasn't to found of the semi-transparent enemies either, it's just not necessary imo.

I also thought that it was a bit too dark. The problem being that, it's not supposed to be dark, you admit the player should set brightness level really high. I don't believe that's how it should be done, if you don't want it to be so dark, you should make it brighter, rather than ask people to turn up their brightness settings (primarly because a lot of players never read author comments, too). I don't know if it's possible to select a zone with alt-gr in SWPBuild like in Mapster in order to change brightness of the entire zone in one go, but if it is, it wouldn't take long to make it brighter, too.

But it was a good map, I enjoyed it. I played on skill#3 and would have wanted more 'real' enemies though, it seemed that most of what there were to shoot were ghost and bees.

Thanks for trying the map :) F11 changes the brightness from 1-8. I've used a higher brightness all these years because I played multiplayer the most and a brighter setting really helps in multiplayer and I forgot I had it set higher, so when I would launch the map to test it I was like "no no no much too bright" and then darkened it down, lol. There are nightvision goggles in the secret area near the start point. When you enter the outside area where the rocket launcher is, some more enemies spawn into the map. The original Heretic version of that map only has like 3 different kinds of enemies. The few transparent enemies were to add to the eerie feeling of the map and was also just me trying something different. The "black and white" scheme of the inside was also something new I tried and it really makes the blood splatter "pop." Back to the brightness subject, I likely could brighten the entire map by r-alt selecting the whole map and then going to 3dmode, point at a wall and press + or -. I didn't think anyone actually played shadow warrior on a brightness less than 3 or 4 so I didn't worry about it too much and this way it gives you the option to go ultra dark, if it's a big enough issue I could always change it though. Did the accursed head popping out of nowhere with a scream actually startle anybody? lol.

edit: .. Just played the map with sw/dosbox and the brightness on #1 setting was really good actually so I dunno, going to leave the brightness as is.

thankyou for your work on the Sw High resolution pack Tea Monster & Hendricks :)

also:
"The deathtrap in the dark corridor before the end was bullshit though, and I wasn't to found of the semi-transparent enemies either, it's just not necessary imo."

- This made me laugh pretty good, lol .. caught you by surprise did it? .. I'm guessing you got too close to the accursed head that blinds you, even the ones that are set to blind you, if you are too close when they off will do damage.
