The game's been out for couple of weeks. Surely you can wait further patches if you want the ultimate experience, no?

That was an interesting read. I'd be curious to know what Romero thinks about Doom now that it has been released. As for the Masters of Doom book and those that haven't read it, I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in how Carmack and Romero broke into the industry and their days at id.

You know what greatly amuses me about DooM 4, particularly the fact that it's so beloved by most of the players on here?

It's basically Brutal DooM 2. :)

Is anything bottlenecking or throttling your GPU?

Boy am I glad I don't give a shit about new games :)
My lack of NG interest has saved me untold monies.

I thought there might have been an issue with the GPU clock speed, but even at 105%, it's not running well. It could very well be a VRAM issue.

I'm almost certain it's a VRAM issue, I have a GTX 960 just like you do, only difference is that I have 4gb of VRAM, and I run pefectly fine. Something tells me that between Doom and some other app on your system, the VRam is just getting used up completely and there's a ton of GPU to System RAM swapping.

How about getting the soundtrack released so people can listen to it.

Is there anywhere to download the whole soundtrack? Every copy I see is incomplete.

Weird how Zenimax doesn't want money. Had it been on Bandcamp...

It's baffling why they're not selling it. It's one of the higher points of the game.

Maybe they thought the soundtrack was too generic and didn't bother to obtain licensing for an OST release?

I personally love the soundtrack, of course. Each level in the game has its own personality thanks to the music.

It has that glitchy industrial sound of Nine Inch Nails and Front Line Assembly, both of which I love. It makes me wonder what could have been had Reznor handled the sound duties for DOOM 3.

One of the main components Mick Gordon used was a 1980s Soviet analog synth known as the Polivoks which has a rather distinct sound and can produce some impressive bass. Kind of off-topic but here is the creator demoing his creation.

I just discovered this Doom Rebuild Soundtrack by Andrey Avkhimovich. Check it out!

https://itunes.apple...ld/id1037684640

(A wee bit off topic.) And a Duke Nukem 3D Rebuild here!

https://itunes.apple...ld/id1059601009

I hope Bobby Prince doesn't get pissed at this or did he allow Andrey to rebuild these sound tracks?

Bobby Prince was a lawyer before he did music. If he didn't like it and had any authority over the songs you'd likely hear from him. He knew exactly how much he could borrow from the source material he was making songs from. He did both music and SFX work for DOOM/II and I don't think he owns them any more than Adrian Carmack owns the artwork he did for the games.

In the video I have watched I was wondering if Trent Reznor was involved, but after a while you can tell it isn't... is like Trents stuff is less predictable in flow, even today. I would buy a DooM soundtrack based on what I have heard so far.
I am sure if Bethesda realizes they can make a dime, they will release a soundtrack.

They probably worked out licensing whatever music they used from the original Doom with Prince. Prince likes to hold onto his music rights. He put a quick stop to that Duke Nukem II album that was released a few years ago.

For a split second, I was like "Wait, what?" before I realized you were talking about Bobby Prince of Apogee fame. :)

I thought the same thing... and I was like "wait, Prince was a musician from a teen..." There is only one Prince to me. :D

Yeah I did consider that it was going to confuse. Should have just written Bobby Prince.

What the actual fuck? That sounds both so retro and contemporany at the same time. Really nice approch.

I'd like to hear the Doom 3 theme done by Mick Gordon in DOOM's style. The Cyberdemon track sounds very close to its intro, but then never actually gets there.

EDIT: Ah, here's another track with elements from the Doom 3 theme. But not the full theme itself. Heh, there's probably enough in the soundtrack that you could make a reasonable facsimile of the Doom 3 theme by cutting and pasting and it would sound fine because of its glitchy overdriven style.

Flesh & Metal literally is the DOOM 3 theme song broken up, but the main melody is there.

Also, the intro guitar portion of Rip and Tear reminds me a lot of Deep Into The Code from E3M3, which itself had the melody of At DOOM's Gate (E1M1) in it.

I think my favorite has to be BFG Division.

Finally beat the game last night (XBone) on "Hurt Me Plenty"... completing every extra checkbox possible before beating the final boss.

I am still flabbergasted at how much fun the single player first person combat is in this game. It has already been said before better than I can... but it brings to the table all the advantages of modern expectations while triggering my sense of legitimate accomplishment versus faux accomplishment the FPS genre has cucked itself into.

I was actually a bit sad once I had no more challenges or weapon masteries to unlock. I tried some Ultra Nightmare but I fear my DNA and (more pressingly) relationship responsibilities will be a barrier to that accomplishment. When I fail I do feel it's my fault. WTF did the devs smoke or sacrifice to pull this out of the hell it was in? :)

Doom seems like a positive mirror of DNF's own development history. DNF had multiple redesigns (not for the better) and Doom had a redesign (for the better). DNF tried to do fun things like glory kills but Doom did it so much better. DNF tried to go more modern, Doom went more oldschool.
