What are you guys actually allowed to do? Can you remake the old Duke games? Can you make something set in the Duke3D universe, but not something modern? What is it that you actually have the rights to as far as Duke is concerned?

If nothing else a new Duke game please.

I'm sorry. Gearbox has the sole rights to the development of new Duke games. What part of this are you guys not getting, seriously?

Make all the games, including Duke Nukem 3d, public domain.

There are some vague comments in the docs I read about 3DR having "some" rights still to Duke IP, stuff regarding a trilogy and continuing work on already started projects, one titled "survivor"? also something named "critical mass"?? nothing really concrete. Plus rights to Duke3D is still 3DRealms.

Interceptor has obviously shown interest in making a new Duke game, my best guess is buying 3D realms will help to make that happen.

Yes this. Please answer Tea Monster's question.

My guess is it will be announced tomorrow. Buying 3DRealms could've been a move in the right direction towards Gearbox either letting them finish Mass Destruction with a license OR buying the Duke rights back outright. All my opinion though

The new Apogee Software wasn't included in this acquirement, in case anyone happens to wonder about it.

Fresch already stated that Duke Nukem Reloaded would be considered a new Duke game, which they cannot do without GBX' approval. This also was stated in context of Duke 1 and 2. They can be made to run on mobile devices and they can add a frame around the screen area. But they cannot remake it.

But let me get one thing straight ... GBX just sued 3DR and Interceptor because GBX considers Mass Destruction a new game while 3DR had claimed it was DN-Survivor and some people here suggest that Interceptor make completely new Duke games.

mmmkay ....

Whatever it is you release, make sure there is access to a console and an editor. From what I have read on these forums, the lack of them was a huge issue with DNF.

A lot of people are saying "make a new IP", but then what's the point on buying 3D Realms?

New mechanics and other stuff can be introduced to old IPs anyway, plus free advertising on gaming sites because of brand recognition.
Just saying...

This and release all the source codes of all the remaining Apogee/3D Realms games under GPL.

Only time will tell what comes from this. My advice would be:

Settling things 'once and for all' with Gearbox would probably aide in future development.

Obviously something fresh in the Duke Nukem series would be fantastic, but only if it's done "right". (Not a port or a remake)

Perhaps a new IP? Taken inspiration from the 90's, and 3DR list of games. Or you know, whatever your team and fans suggest.

Whatever Interceptor is working on, there MUST be part where Duke is clinically depressed!

>What would you like to see from 3D Realms in the future?

Right away you could release the game assets for the 1998 Quake 2 engine based duke
and everything made for the 2001 Unreal Engine based one as a gesture of good faith!

That would keep the fan community busy for a while, until you figure it out.

I still drool over the E3 2001 trailer every now and then...

I'm pretty sure that anything DNF related is now under the wing of Gearbox.

Releasing the early 2000's version of DNF is a wonderful idea, if not particularly legal or financially rewarding

What IPs do you guys have from the acquisition? I mean, is Cosmo part of that deal?

Duke Nukem is owned by Gearbox, Lo Wang is under Flyign Wild Hog.

But what about Cosmo's Cosmic Adventures or Commander Keen?

However, I do upvote the "New IP" idea. I want to see some new characters and stories. So far you have done reboots of old FPS. Have you considered branching beyond that? Why not try your hand at an action RPG with gritty gun shooting? A realistic FPS or action/RPG in a contemporary period....but isn't Call of Duty.

I want longer games, games that I can play over and over again, games that come with a level editor/mod capability.

What? Shadow warrior isn't owned by interceptor now?

Commander Keen is id Software's property. Apogee was just the publisher for Keen 1-5, much like FormGen was for Keen 6 and SoftDisk was for Keen Dreams.

Commander Keen is own by ID which is owned by Bethesda.

Edit: Damn you Hendricks!

Duke Nukem Mass Destruction was going to be this, although not an FPS but instead an overhead game

I'm pretty sure 3DR still owns Shadow Warrior.

Source codes, betas, and be more lenient to fangames, for what you have jurisdiction over anyway.

In general, just be awesome to the community.

First off, I'd try and release the 3DR/Apogee's back catalog on Steam and GoG, if only to make it easy to access Apogee's back catalog without having to deal with 3DR's site.

A new Blake Stone game would be pretty nice. Interceptor's been hinting at it for a while in things like the Apogee Throwback Pack on Steam.

Way down the line, I think a cool idea would be to reinvent some of Apogee's old franchises, like Secret Agent and Crystal Caves. Like, you could make Secret Agent a stealthy sidescroller that plays similar to Gunpoint, while Crystal Caves could have an economy added to it to drive you to purchase goodies instead of using them to advance to the next level, but if you spend too much, you won't get the best ending or an extra level.

Beta and source code releases would be nice as well.

Which isn't really related with buying 3dRealms.

I'm happy for you and your team, nice job. I agree with a lot of statements already made such as tread softly. But i all i want is more Duke i guess that's a tough situation. I like the remake idea, because time goes on and it's very cool to see classic games remade and released publicly out there with the modern games even if its DNF. I think Duke needs a little darkness Duke can have a serious side to him like Max Payne does.... Anyway i could go on on on about new ideas but don't know what the rights are like. What about re releasing Zero Hour with multiplayer and all xD ? is that possible? me and some friends been thinking of that for some time now

My personal opinion is for them to just forget about Duke Nukem, even though 3DR retained the rights for the old DN games but remaking them still requires Gearbox's permission.

-If possible (and have the rights to) host the rest of 3D Realms/Apogee back catalog on GOG.com/Steam. 3D Realms seems to have attempted to start doing so with games like Duke Nukem 1 + 2 and Hocus Pocus on GOG but then the releases suddenly stopped...

-If the above point is expanded upon and done, then I expect the games to supported somewhat and actually cared for. Blake Stone on Steam is STILL unpatched from the 1.0 version and the creator of ECWolf has expressed his desires of having it updated to at least 2.1 so his source port works properly with the game.

-No more DOS games to iOS devices. Duke Nukem 2 is an "okay" port but the multiple layers of emulation do nothing for the game. Port if you have source code.

-Any outstanding source code should be looked into/released/whatever. Alien Carnage I am aware of, one of the developers do have the source code for it but is apparently not that useful but SOMEONE might like it out there.

-Any outstanding older builds of games. I know this has always been a shaky situation for 3D Realms with legal stuff but, if possible it would be great.

-No more 'Duke' games other than Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction(Survivor). Duke Nukem doesn't need to be released any more, unless you "acquire" the license to the Duke Nukem rights then back off. Duke Nukem 3D doesn't need to be touched any more and it is available on almost every system out there (eduke32 Android soon). I would not mind Duke Nuke(u)m or Duke Nukem 2 being rebuilt/reverse engineered or maybe the console games having the same treatment but really, lay low with Duke.

That's all I can currently think of off the top of my head.
