What are the most controversial opinions you hold about video games?

Even though the SP was pretty much the same thing each level.

A replica of the multiplayer experience without other human players is not a singleplayer campaign.

I tried playing CS GoldSrc a while back and absolutely nobody is playing anymore. That scene used to be bustling. Even CS:GO isn't that crowded. Only found a handful of servers if that.

Quake III and Unreal Tournament are great examples of what a single player campaign should not be. I thoroughly hated that multiplayer only era of shooters. I guess that's why I never got into Quake or any of the Unreal games past the first one (there was the sequel, but the sequel was just utterly boring).

UT99 was the best online game ever.

Quake 3 is shit. It gets boring so fast. The firefights are way too short, plus it's designed for beta male "cyber athletes." Two words that shouldn't be in the same sentence. Ever.

Yeah, I played UT99 years later and I loved it the few times I played with friends. But at the time I couldn't figure out why single player campaigns were an endangered species. This was me coming fresh out of Half-Life for the first time and being blown away by it. Then there was Team Fortress, Action Half-Life, Counter-Strike...I started playing Counter-Strike quite a bit, actually. But I still hated Quake and Unreal for the fact that they abandoned SP. Unreal 1 was one of the best FPS experiences I've ever had. So much better than either Quakes or Doom or any of them. A very close second to Half-Life. What an adventure. If I had to rate my top three they'd be HL, Unreal, and Duke3D in that order. I wish they'd get back to doing stuff like that. I wish we could see a remake of Unreal. I wish they'd allow fans to remake it, which they have specifically stated they do not want. Even in the UT3 engine. Why do companies want to bury their best titles and franchises? Why is the world so stupid? Games suck. Bah...

It's not about single player though. There's no plot to build on and computers players are inferior. It's there for when you're internet is down.

Arena shooters can't really offer a unique experience, in that respect.

If you had play a remake of an old game, you wouldn't buy their newest titles, isn't that simple?

Yeah, console players that are forced to watch cutscenes must be so smart...

It says SP and has a story line, so it's SP.

You do the same stuff you do in multiplayer and the storyline is completely unrelated to your actions, though, like in Unreal Tournament and Quake 3. When I say I want a WW2 game that lets me play a Nazi in single player, it means that the levels must have a logical progression like in a real war, and that the missions must include what characterized the Nazis: antisemitic dialogues, destroying villages, killing civilian Jews, leading them to concentration camps, maybe even suffocating a concentration camp revolt by killing prisoners, and so on.

The same reason is why I like Quake 2 and 4, but not Quake 3 (or why I like Unreal, but not Unreal Tournament): because the singleplayer matches are indistinguishable from multiplayer matches, and the story is completely irrelevant.
If I was told to make a game where the story is "various fighters are abducted from various worlds by aliens called Vadrigar and forced to fight against each other in their arenas" I would make a lot more than what has been done with Quake 3. I would relegate the total Quake3 single player experience to a skirmish mode (already present in Quake 3, but totally indistinguishable from the "normal" single player mode).

This is the singleplayer campaign I would make: you are an alien warrior on another world, you are on a mission, and suddenly you see the Vadrigar spaceships crowd the sky. You get abducted together with many others; inside the spaceship you see humanoids from many other species (so you realize that the Vadrigar abducted them from many planets) and you hear them scream and yell to be freed (so you know that everyone is there against their will). Then you are led to an arena, you play some deathmatches (where your player character acknowledges that he got killed and resurrected many times) and then you can choose to escape from the arenas and follow other fighters in a revolt against the Vadrigar.
One thing I would not do is to make allied NPCs invulnerable, because that is something that breaks the immersivity of the story. Nor would I cause the game to end or become unwinnable if an allied NPC is killed, because that, too, is a big immersivity breaker.

Heh. Now that would be something.

Anyway, back in topic: another controversial video game opinion I have is that in the Half-Life series, NPCs should acknowledge that Gordon Freeman is, in fact, mute.

I wouldn't buy it anyway. But obviously if they're making multiplayer only games then that must mean that multiplayer is "in" (at least, they must think so or they wouldn't have made multiplayer only games). So anyone, in their eyes, that is looking for that Unreal 1 single player experience would be in a very niche group and wouldn't matter. No, it's not to insure people buy their new games. Besides, if it was a UT3 mod you would require UT3 to play it! If anything that would INCREASE sales. Yet they still don't allow it.

That would ruin the immersion for me.

What? He is not mute. He is not. When I play Half Life I take over the role of Gordon and well, I even shoutet for example "What? You Idiot." at Magnusson when I thought he meant I was responsible for the Cascade ... until I learned that he meand the microwave incident.

It is not so good for people who want to consume only and have everything presented. But it is well written dia-/monologue, so that you answer in your mind, if the latter is capable of such hard work instead of only being used to have been told and shown everything and being taken by the hand and act passively only. That's why some don't stand there like an idiot in Half Life, others do, though.

Controversial but already mentioned opinion:
The above is the way many more games should be made. You know, immersion ... instead of for example some dude named Reaper blabbering alot about going on a war against the Necris i don't care about and and talking about revenge when I only want to play a(n Unreal) Tournament.

Precisely. I compare that to having a mute friend and moving his face with your hands, while you talk in a mock voice and you say what you want to say, to pretend that he is not mute.

On the other hand, it would be awesome if there was an FPS with a speech-interpretation routine where you are actually supposed to talk into a microphone with NPCs, who then react in a plausible way according to what you say.

Gordon is just an aspie.

Did anybody else play the Specialists mod for Half Life? I used to run a dedicated server for that game. Man I miss it.

Nah, he's a badass mute scientist. If he was an assburger, he'd just stay on the internet reminding people over and over of that, hoping to instill pity in them. He'd also draw comics where he is 20 years younger than his real age, normoweight and always surrounded by his furfag imaginary friends. And he'd call himself Gord-chan.

I'll probably play it at some point in two days. It's not listed on the list of LAN party games, but we always end up playing it.

I wish I lived in Long Island just so I could join that LAN party.

Protip: Action Half Life maps work just fine in the Specialists. I had like 60 maps in my dedicated server at one time.

-I tried multiple times to play The Legend of Zelda series and i just couldn't (for long) because they were ducking boring (with possible exception of the A Link to the past)

-I actually like MW3 more than MW and MW2, mostly because it has an amazing story which is on par or even better than WW2 story, and WW2 actually happened.

-I like Farcry 2 more than 3, due to lack of "classic" weapons, while there are AKs, Dragunovs, and PKMs there aren't any other tried and true guns, like Uzis, battle rifles like FN FAL, G3, Modelo C,
and guns you'd expect on an island in middle of nowhere, and since there are WW2 era japanese influences it wouldn't kill the developers to add ancient guns like Type 100...

-I dislike snipers (in any game), because they are usually retarded 8 year olds, but other than that i still hate them, because they are pansies, i mean if he's a coward in a video game, what would he be in real life?

-I pirate most of my games, if it's made by EA you can betcho sweet ass i pirated it, because EA is a bunch of money grubbing jews who'll do anything (including completely ruining the franchise) for half a dollar more. coughcoughredalert3coughcough

-Doom 3 is a very good game but the title attracts the wrong crowd as it's VERY different from it's predecessors.

Have anyone here tried Tron 2.0?
It's one of the last somewhat old-school PC FPS, considering it was released in 2003 for PC only first and developed by Monolith.
I played it for like 1-2 hours and it's an old-school fps in heart, but it has some modern FPS elements and RPG elements too, but so far it seems really good.
Do you guys know about any other somewhat modern but old-school like PC FPS's?
