Games have gone the Hollywood model and look where that's gotten Hollywood, much less the game industry.

Hollywood has a wider range of budget tiers, though. And thus a wider range of maker's independence based on a budget.

Yeah, I wouldn't say Hollywood is as bad, but I see his point.

Yep. And Hollywood was way worse in the 40s/50s with exclusive contracts, aggressive movie editing and blacklisting.

Let me clarify. When I say Hollywood, I'm not referring purely to budget. I'm referring to the development strategy of the media. In this case, as development scaled up, their development strategies; utilizing marketing, product placement, etc have become the same strategic model that Hollywood uses and are aimed to be quick cash grabs and moved on from ASAP. In other words, dumbed-down mass-market consumable throwaway experiences directed by suits who have no idea what the media is actually about.

You also see a tremendous amount of sequelitus and IP being milked for all it's worth. Also, I'm definitely not referring to independent films and whatnot. I'm directly referencing the idea of blockbuster normal theater films as an analogy for AAA games in both their creation methods and post-release marketing and business.

Now that Interceptor bought out by 3D Realms. Will there be talks w/ ID/Zenimax on the Commander Keen rights and the Source Code releases? It's a "what if".

Amazing read. I've been listing #1 as the main reason gaming has been going to shit for years. Everyone ignores reason #1.

I think there's something else that intertwines with #1 though. It's the elephant in the room no one wants to mention.

Gamers have become bitchy, petty, losers. As the amount of time needed to be a gamer increases the amount of quality people in the community decreases. Gaming should be a form of art, not a lifestyle choice.

I apologize for the false hope, Lunick.

You're welcome!

I agree on #1. For a long time I was working on getting a game programming job. Then, when Xbox360/PS3 came out and I saw the glut of crap games and lack of quality quirky inventive titles that made me start programming to begin with, I began to have serious doubts about the direction of the industry and decided to just go it alone as an independent developer. There's no way I could go into work doing something I originally loved, slaving away 60-80 hours a week on something I don't give a flying fuck about, and retain my sanity and love of games.

As far as your last point, that's the entitled generation for you!

Any moment now.

Somebody's gonna ask John Romero again to have him start hunting down the Keen 1-3 source codes.

*FROTHS*

This needs to be ported to PSP *immediately* upon release.

Incidentally, one guy here (spongeh) claims to be working on the release, but I'm somewhat dismayed by what he says;

Quote

I still need to go through and add appropriate headers and all that fun stuff.

There's about 100k of inline assembler, mostly VGA/CGA/EGA rendering crud that would need to be removed/rewritten for modern platforms, but there definitely is some non-rendering related ASM.

I would STRONGLY prefer this to be posted without ANY modification of any kind. Afterall, I want to see id's code bottled in time. People can port it and clean it up after the fact but I think a virgin release is imperative.

It should be out in a week or so. Bethesda are busy with other things like the launch of The Elder Scrolls Online or something.

I read him as saying that people who want to actually make use of the code will have to remove/replace those bits not that they will be held back from actual release.

Edit:

He even says so on the next page of that thread:

Quote

Assets and non-code stuff have been removed, but the code is untouched except to add the proper GPL headers for release. As mentioned, I have no desire to rewrite assembler and modernize 16 bit code, I just made sure it can build valid EXEs and runs. I don't know when it'll have the final OK to release, but hopefully it'll be soon.

That post hadn't been made at my time of posting here. And, on rereading, I agree. But, he specifically says :

Quote

The project files were only changed to default the Borland include/lib paths to something sane (aka not on the F: drive) and a batch file was changed from ncopy -> copy since most people aren't going to be running Novell Netware.

I maintain that I'd prefer this to be left alone in its entirety and let people make the alterations themselves. Even a "Virgin" and "Corrected" version as the release would be acceptable. As an example, the Wolf3D code was posted intact, unmodified (I downloaded it from Compuserve on a crappy 9600 baud connection) whereas the Doom source was a modification/port of the Linux variant due to issues with the sound library. While I can still get the majority of the essence of John Carmack's style in programming and other tangential but related aspects, and these changes are really miniscule, I can't help but feel that I'm not getting to experience it as they saw it prior to release. And that's what I want.

Edit :

He says later :

I'm still a bit iffy on that. Wouldn't a boilerplate agreement/GPL be sufficient? The Wolf3D source was released this way and it was fine.

There is no reason to complain with what we're getting. The Duke and SW sources were both prepared by Charlie Wiederhold in a fashion very similar to what sponge is doing with Keen: sorting things out, making sure they work, making small and superficial but non-deleterious changes where needed, adding a bit of documentation, and adding license info to the top of each file.

You forget that this is a company about to put its history on its GitHub. Releasing an unmodified package straight from the archives is plain sloppy*, and we're not losing anything.

*Trust me, I sorted the Deadly Kiss archive.

It's also no reason to not note what I, and obviously others, want. They could do both with minimal extra effort. One a straight copy for historical purposes and one shined up. I don't think this is unreasonable. They did this with Wolfenstein 3D already nearly 20 years ago, and saw no issue with it, so why should this be any different?

Wow :)

I don't know anything else at the moment. I'm sure NY00123 knows a bit more than I do though.

It is now complete! Hopefully Keen will go multi-platform in the future.

Now if Romero can release the source to Daikatana.
