EA now offers refunds for first-party games purchased from its Origin store.

The company’s Great Game Guarantee policy stipulates that a refund will be granted on a game download provided it is requested within 24 hours of the player launching the game, within seven days of an unplayed game’s purchase, or within seven days of a preordered game's release date.

A refund is requested by visiting Origin’s order history, clicking the ‘request a refund’ link next to the appropriate purchase, and answering “a few quick questions”, said EA.

“We hope every game you play on Origin will meet [a] high bar, and we're happy to say that starting today, we can guarantee that we'll make things right if you decide the game you just bought didn’t live up to your expectations,” it added.

“If something doesn't work out – you aren’t riveted by the storyline, or sucked in by the action, or even just if the game doesn't play well with your video card – we’ve got your back.”

The refund mechanism is available now in 20 countries, and will be accessible everywhere by the end of September.

During SimCity’s launch troubles earlier this year, EA stated that it would not be offering refunds on games purchased through Origin.

Remember, this is for EA published titles and not third party games just to make it clear.

I still don't think that solves the Sim City mess though :P

Are not most of the games on Origin EA published titles? (I haven't opened Origin in a long time)

That's a good feature. Might force Steam to offer something similar.

Nice! The only thing missing from Steam. Still won't use Origin, though.

Steam does offer a one time refund per account iirc. So you can claim a refund once through a steam ticket and it gets refunded into your Steam wallet. I do stand to be corrected though.

Do not forget that screwing the consumer is common from EA, you never know what kind of trick they may pull on you.

Aside from reselling, renting, drm-free installers and proper guarantees in Subscriber Agreement?

I don't understand reselling digital products. It doesn't make sense in my head. Renting I could do with. Mostly, though, I'd rather just have demos, which is on developers not Steam. DRM-free installers, maybe. Refunds are the first thing I'd request, though.

Really could have used a refund back when I bought that game.

What if I want to part with my license to play this game?

Why does it hurt you so much to have a license to do something you don't want? I mean, it's all good and everything, it's cool if that's what you or anybody would want to do. Myself, I don't really care if I have the license or not. I'd just not play the game if I grew bored of it. But I don't even sell my used physical games.

Then I don't know what you're getting at.

I'm getting at having a choice. The same as people have with physical stuff. They sell me a licence to use their product. Why can't I resell the same license? Although, if you agree with everything else then I'm not gonna push. And by "renting" I actually meant "lending".

Lending for free would be nice too. Being able to try a game for 10-30 minutes, after which none of the game settings would be saved like save games and keybinds etc so that you couldn't just "rent" again and continue where you left off. Maybe a min of a week or something before being allowed to rent again. Or even 24 hours. This would only work well for Steamworks games, though, as otherwise you could just copy the game files out and run it outside of Steam.

Nope, otherwise I can simply pirate a game. Like I can now.

To hell with those steamworks drm features.

Care to explain what you mean by asking someone to explain?

Yeah, it has been a little. But thanks for your post, because the posts after it is what made me have faith again. :P

You don't get to complain on the grounds of principles when you start condoning piracy. And don't get me wrong, I'm not condemning anybody that does, really. I just think it's a double-standard. Now, if it's something you do BECAUSE of DRM, that's one thing. If it's something you've already been doing then the point is lost to me...

Reread what she said, she was just making a logical point not condoning piracy. Nobody is going through the trouble of purchasing and reselling only to "copy the game files" if you can pirate it.

Ah I see. My bad. I just meant that it's a possibility and a risk that they probably wouldn't take.
