Rise Of The Triad (2013)

E2M2 is one of the most frustrating levels I've ever played. This game just wasn't ready to ship. I appreciate Interceptor had limited resources, but this needed way more testing. The game it reminds me of the most is Necrovision. I'm not trying to insult ROTT - I think it's a pretty neat game let down by some serious rough edges and a few silly design decisions.

Gearbox can't afford any more damage to the Duke IP, even if the damage is free. They have plenty of time to damage it themselves.

Something I'm wondering... were they absolutely forced to push it out this early? Like, they just didn't have the ability to keep development going for another year or two?

Everybody has to start from somewhere, even Valve had it's beginnings on already existing games/franchises.

Umm....no? Besides licensing the Quake engine...not really the same.

I'm not even a little bit interested in Duke Reloaded. Just let it disappear, or release what they have to the community. I would rather see Interceptor create a game universe from scratch. That would be awesome. I think despite a poor launch and a few frustrations, they did a really faithful job with ROTT. I really hope, outside of ports, supporting ROTT and other smaller projects, they make something brand new for their next big project.

I have mostly enjoyed what I have played so far, apart from the already mentioned annoyances.

The only other things that let it down for me is the contrast is too high and the speed of the character is a little too fast.

Yes they did. Do some research.

Gabe Newell for example, started out making a port of Doom (Doom95) when he was still in Microsoft, then eventually planned on starting his own studio, and aside from Half-Life, most of their franchises came from other peoples' work.

Team Fortress: Fan-made Mod for Quake.
Counter-Strike: Mod for Half-Life 1 made by fans, when HL1 was Valve's only released game.
Deathmatch Classic: Complete re-make of Quake 1 Deathmatch in GoldSrc Engine.
Day of Defeat: Yet another Fan-Made Mod for HL1, made by the Counter-Strike team, which was taken under Valve's wing.
Left 4 Dead: Was a project made by another studio who licensed the Source Engine, but Valve took the project under their own wing later.

Hell, the trend still goes on today with DOTA 2.

Doom95 is a port and not a new game. Besides, whatever Gabe did before Half-Life was not as Valve so it doesn't count. I'm sure anyone who's gotten into game design and eventually started their own company did something else before their first project. And Team Fortress Classic came after Half-Life. Valve's first project was still Half-Life. An entirely brand new IP.

We understood [the begging] as [the first game].
Half-Life is entirely original IP, but yes. Everything else including the Portal series were of either mods or taking over another studio already in progress.

They're very good with the community aspect of things and it has yielded them unimaginable results, but they do pull their own when it comes to coding/releasing hence the huge intervals between games.

There was also the canned Quiver and Prospero, also wouldhavebeen original IPs at Valve's start.

Doom95 wasn't Newell's project - that was WinDoom. Doom95 was done by Alex St. John at Monolith.

Only Prospero was put on indefinite hold. Quiver was always just an early codename for Half-Life.

That's a different game, coincidentally a first person shooter as well, that just happens to share the name.

Anyway, you can't really compare Valve to Interceptor as Valve was founded by two literal millionaires who already had years of software development experience working at Microsoft.

Well, those that understand Unreal, the game is editable.
I did not find the editor, so I simply imported a map into the Unreal, missing are the textures, but hey ...

4-5 weeks after release to get the tools out apparently, and to also update the 'Mods' tab in-game to be clickable and any other updates to make the game fully moddable. Hopefully the big bug fixing patch should be out before the weekend ends, as well.

Well, it was a lot of fun while it lasted, but I'll have to stop at E3L4 because I'm getting something around 10 FPS... at this ridiculous frame rate I can't play the game without getting a gigantic headache. :P (how could the FPS drop so much on this level? uhrg...)

What's the next best thing to moving onto a GAD and missing, falling into an insta death pit? Successfully getting onto the GAD, and mysteriously sliding off a few seconds later. Gotta love this game.

Thanks to everyone who came out to QuakeCon 2013 to play Rise of the Triad! Now the real work begins! The team is getting back to work on releasing patches, fixes, optimizations, new maps, more features, more weapons and the LUDICROUS DEVELOPMENT KIT so you can start working on MODS!

Stay SOONed.

The whole SOON thing was annoying when they used it the first time. I don't know what they're trying to achieve by continued use of it.

Either mention at least a rough date, or don't say anything at all with regards to time.

How about When its done.

Haha, I was about to say that ReaperMan.

"Soon" is the new "When It's Done".

Those new to the internet and gaming might have missed it, of course. But as mentioned before, "Soon" was the new "Two weeks" (UT) or When it's Done (DNF).

When it's done was slightly annoying but it's just the same as saying TBD and isn't so bad.

SOON makes it seem like it's right around the corner and is meant to be a tease. Considering Interceptors huge arrogance and how the product turned out, I don't think they ought to be teasing anyone.

Yes, because "when it's done" is surely less interpretive than "soon."
