Game was a financial success even on the PSX and kept Delphine running until everyone got bored with their motoracer games
I didn't know that it was a financial success and I never liked moto racer games because I was never attracted to motorcycles of any type in real life.
The only moto racing game that I liked was exitebike for the nes...

. Of course now the graphics are dated and gameplay mechanics are antiquated but so does almost everything that is 15 years old. Duke Nukem 3D is nowadays unplayable for the Call of Halo crowd - regardless how great this game was in 1996. Does it mean that Duke Nukem 3D licks rhesus balls?
I'm sorry to contradict you here but not all 15 years old games have aged as bad as Fade to Black has.
I can play tomb raider very well to this day and I have no problem adapting to the outdated controls because they are not as laggy as the ones from fade to black.
As for Duke 3d being shit now for the Call of Halo generation, I agree but then again I was talking in my personal name and not in the name of that retarded gamer generation that can't even play counter strike 1.6 or Hl2 without a fucking gamepad...
I am talking about the vast generation of gamers that still exists today and that has grown up with mouse and keyboard and can use them with ease in any type of game, especially in third person and fps games...
If you want to claim that older games are shit now, then how about you look at Flashback that is older than Fade to Black and which manages to be a perfect platformer game even to this day and has great controls.
The problem is not that Fade to black is old, the problem is that it has had shitty controls and animations even back when it first came out.
No. It wasn't even made by Delphine Software either only licensed. Chahi had no creative control over it. It was developed by internals in Interplay and released only in US. And BTW it sucks turds hard.
Uh, where did I say so. I said he agreed that they make a sequel and Eric suggested that it will be from the alien point of view. It later wasn't. (To be clear: Eric suggested to have the same events of ANother World be seen from the alien's point of view, not the ones after Another World as it is in Heart of Alien).

When I heard FlashBack had a sequel I was trilled, ... until I saw it O_O.
It would be cool if the remake would be the 2 first games stories into 1, obviously making the 2nd game 2D also.
In the "making of trailer" the guy said their would be quotes from popular movies of the time and other nods, I'd hate it if they over did it, and it would become more of a homage to the 90's movies and loose it's identity in the process. I heard one reviewer say retrocity rampage is almost all Homage hardly unique. (don't know if it's accurate) And yeah I realize the original game was heavily influenced by entertainment of the time, but it still felt like it's own thing.
This is kind of petty, but it annoys me that they have decided to give Conrad a hood under his jacket.
Conrad isn't a "bro" or some teenage pussy that thinks wearing a hood makes them edgy or relevant, seems like far too many new game characters have hoods to make them less generic when in fact it achieves the exact opposite.
It's bad enough that I have to see hood wearing teenagers and college "bro's" everywhere without them infecting my games. And the new facial hair makes him look kind of douchey too.
Like I said petty.
Anyway here is some gameplay.

They changed the pacing of the original a lot.
They also killed the sense of slow exploration and the sense that each jump needs to be a carefully calculated one.
Also the change of the robot enemies that you first met in game is kind of uninspired.
Why did they have to replace that type of small robot that had some nice tracks and was a ground unit only, into a flying generic as fuck drone I will never know.
From the looks of that video it also looks like the eery silence of the jungle accompanied only by a few discreet alien jungle noises has been replaced with a full on real life jungle ambient noise.
When you fight enemies you now get a shitty action music that plays during the fight too...
The added voice dialogs are obviously there for the new generation of lazy little shits that can't be bothered to read 5 lines of dialog text and much rather hear the characters talk among themselves with some rewritten dialogs that sound retarded and extremely amateurish as the guy from eurogamer also noted...
The characters sound like some angry adults from a kids cartoon show that always uses censored curses and replacement words like "OUCH" or "critter" instead of "bastard" or "mother fucker" or "piece of shit"
The dialogs sound inept and extremely scripted too taking a lot from the seriousness of the game...
The game is fucking aimed at 12 year olds now...
You celebrate 20 fucking years of a serious game's existence and you release it again in the form of an extremely easy full of tutorials and tips game for 12 year olds? Yeah that's what they've done. Very fucking smart of them what can I say...
The level design is not that bad but the way your character blasts through the level and through all the jumps makes it feel like I would be playing the classic game with jumping and speed hacks...
The life bar added to this game is ridiculously long too.
In the original game, you could only take 2 or 3 hits before you died and if you jumped or stepped into a clearly visible laser trap of any kind, you would disintegrate into thin air in one hit and start from the last savepoint computer at which you pressed the use button to automatically give you a checkpoint there, IF you used it because you could very well go past it without activating that checkpoint and be fucked when you died later, having to start from much earlier in the level if not even from the beginning of it.
Now you have some health bar refill stations at which you press use but this is another bullshit childish design decision...
In the original game you had battery charging stations where you would put a battery that was charging your shield and keeping it deflect attacks and by doing this you would regain those 3 life points back.
Now you just have life charges which is lamer and as if the life bar was not long enough already...
They also removed a shitload of memorable and non memorable areas from the levels and they even had the nerve to remove all of the non robot enemies from the first half of the first level in order to simplify the game...
From all that I've seen in that 1 hour gameplay video, I can say that instead of making me happy to replay an all time classic game of great quality that is now using the awesome tech and visuals of today, it only manages to yet again show the exact reasons as to why the gaming industry is shit today compared to what it was in the 90's and it also shows how much the new generation of kids is being spoon fed by the developers of today's games.
The game only manages to annoy me with it's limitations and obvious hand holding mechanics that were bluntly added to help shitfaced children that can't do anything for themselves these days.
I can't enjoy a remake of a hardcore serious 90's game when all I see is a Hannah Montana/Barbie Doll House version of the game catering directly to noob kids that never played or heard about a 90's game in their entire life...
I sure hope that the 1993 version of the game that they included with this one is going to run well because that is the main game that should be popularized.
If when the game comes out today I learn that the 1993 game can only be played once you beat this new one, then they have already fucked up entirely because it's my strong opinion that the original game should be available from the get go so that even people that won't have the patience to beat this new shit game, will at least get the chance to try the old one and see why it's thousands of times better.

I have two hoodies...
Aren't they actually trying to do the opposite? Make him "one of us" or something like that.
Thankfully I won't be playing as you in a game anytime soon. Even if you do make Kathy's Creed I still won't play it.
Sure "one of us" as in the 12-19 year old kids they hope want that look.
It's just something I don't like, I don't expect anyone else to care, old school Conrad wouldn't wear a hood.

Yeah I'm not impressed either, the robots look a bit shit and uninteresting and there are far too many explosions. The original game is not playable until you finish the new one, they don't want people to get a feel for the old one first as they want to imprint the new vibe first so maybe they can do a sequel I imagine. Not happy about the "action music either" and the murder of the classic's ambience. It will be interesting to see what people make of it. I might get it as it's cheap and I would like a non-emulated version of the original on my pc. I wonder which version they will give us?
The best part is that the French government actually gave 300 000€ to fund this game's development. The idea of governments (especially French governments) trying to pick winners is laughable, even more so when it comes to video games.
That's because video games are serious business over here. Video games are OFFICIALY art in my country.
Quote
On March 13, 2006, Raynal along with Shigeru Miyamoto and Michel Ancel were knighted by French Minister of Culture and Communication, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, as Knights of Arts and Literature. It was the first time that video game developers were honored this distinction.[7]

If something is "serious business" then it should not be subsidized by the government. Markets pick winners, governments pick losers. Moreover, it's ridiculous that governments should have any say in defining what is art and what is not art.

Those reviews are the the sad truth unfortunately...
I want to know the thought process involved in such idiotic decision.
I can only guess that they didn't want their game over shadowed by the original. I heard that Conrad shouts inappropriate crap like "Awesome Sauce!" and "Cowabunga!" so that seals it for me, they are not getting any of my money. I knew he would be a douche, the hood and strategic facial hair and modern leather jacket were enough evidence as to how they were planning on ruining the strong silent type character Conrad originally was.
I don't know. I found the first six titles abhorrent, until Crystal Dynamics came and fixed it with their amazing Underworld (Legend and Anniversary were too focused on copying the original CORE Design games and failed because of that). I've yet to play the reboot.

You've somehow managed to have completely the opposite opinion of me on these games. How amusing.

Was Lara ruined with a reboot or earlier?
The series has been rebooted twice (three times if you count Angel of Darkness, four if you count Guardian of Light). Each time it has gotten significantly worse in my eyes as it furiously deviates from the game style that made the first three games incredible to me.

I don't understand the hate for Underworld, quite frankly. Less combat and more exploration/puzzles/platforming? Sounds awesome. The demo sold me on this one and full game didn't disappoint. Perhaps replay is long overdue since I don't remember much except the game being quite good.
I've got it on Steam, waiting to be played. I'll definitely get to it after I finish what I'm currently playing. Been actually wanting to play this game for so long it's a bit silly to see how I've been able to postpone playing it for so long.

I played through the demo as well. Because of the demo I bought the game, but I don't know... there was just something too "on-the-rails" about the whole experience. But then again the first game I played in the series was Tomb Raider 3, which was devastatingly nonlinear.

After reading all your comments I realized I probably shouldn't have kept my hopes high. I lent a few games to a 13 year old I know, then he tells me that he keeps getting stuck and doesn't know what to do, he told me he checks online for the solution. I'm like What? you got stuck in Splinter Cell Chaos Theory on the first level?!?! how did you ever manage that!?!? And then a bunch of other games the same thing happens.
Then I realized, games like this flashback remake are made for them kids, it's because they CAN'T play them if it's not super easy dumb down boring.
The 13 year old tells me things, like, "the game didn't tell me where to go", "I didn't know what to do next"... For those who don't know, Splinter Cell isn't all that complicated. These kids would be in a nightmare trying to play classic point and click adventure games, they'd pull out their hair.
.... It's to bad ....

Yes, that's the way it is today.
Problem is, they don't play their simplified games 24/7 ... they will try to go outside once in a while, they will grow up and have to work and do shopping and things. Let us be honst. If we didn't have handholding in real life for them, evolution would take care of them.

Video games and day-to-day life are hardly within the same galaxy of comparison. I'm not really even sure what you're trying to say here, and I've reread this post several times now.

I am saying that 95% of all people are not up to standard.
A review that discusses Flashback as well as comparing it to DuckTales Remastered (Odd comparison, but oh well). I tried the remake, and for all the reviewer's comedic attempts he made some points that I can't help but agree with regarding Flashback. Even the port of the original game into the new one was just needless over-engineering when they could have done much better; putting it in a postage stamp-sized arcade machine display is just poor design techniques to play on the nostalgia element that the remake brings about.

That arcade machine... What... the... fuck...? It wasn't even released on it!
I haven't played Flashback(although I do remember at least seeing it long time ago), but that is horrendous and I can't imagine the reaction of people who have fond memories about it.
