Help getting Atomic Edition working?  "I have regular edition working with eduke32, cannot get Atomic going"

User is offline   Hogwaump

I have had Duke Nukem running under eDuke32 in 64-bit Windows 7 for some time now. I downloaded the Atomic edition from GOG, and their controls are PITIFUL. I want to get Atomic running under eDuke32 but the obvious solution did not work (copying the duke3d.exe from gog to eduke folder). Can somebody please tell me what all I need to copy to make this work?

You need the GRP file.

I have read elsewhere that I also need the RST file? Anything else I should copy?

Not unless you have any custom files (like ART, VOC, or CON) in your original game folder.

This just isn't working for me, and I don't get it. I cloned the old Duke 3D directory for eduke, called it Duke 3D Atomic. I copied duke3d.exe and duke3d.grp from the GOG download directory into my new Duke 3D Atomic directory. When I execute eduke32.exe from the new directory, I get the same old version playing. When I run the game under dosbox in the GOG directory, I get the Atomic edition. What am I doing wrong? And what is the duke3d_w32.exe file in the eduke directory, which looks suspiciously the same length as the old duke3d.exe?

What do you mean you get the same old version?

It does not have the additional fourth episode, as I see when using GOG's dosbox setup.

Just to be sure, I made a fresh copy of my original eduke folder (entire contents), and then copied the GOG atomic edition GRP into that same folder, overwriting the original. It still comes up as plain old Duke3D, no fourth episode listed in starting a new game.

Judging by the log you posted earlier you do not have the Atomic GRP (42MiB) in your EDuke32 directory, but the 1.3D version (25MiB).

DUKE.RTS is not needed to play. It contains taunts for multiplayer IIRC. However, EDuke32 will complain in the log file if it can't be found.

OK, now we're getting somewhere. Don't know what happened, reinstalled the GOG atomic download and 42MB GRP file appeared. I copied it into my new eduke directory. Now it comes up looking like atomic edition, but major problem:

Running GOG's dosbox version, I have a 4th episode entitled "The Birth" as an option under starting a new game. Running the same GRP under eduke, that 4th option reads "User Map" and brings up my old saved games from the regular Duke3D version. I want to get into that 4th episode, doggone it!

You're still doing it wrong in whatever way.
Make a new directory. Copy eduke32.exe and duke3d.grp (42Mib) into it and nothing else. Start eduke32.exe.

(NOT!) Problem solved!

It turns out that one must also copy the Game.con file from the atomic edition to get that fourth episode to show up correctly.

OK, now I really don't get it. The thing ran once just fine. On the second try, it was right back to the original 3 episodes. No, I did not run the GOG version by accident. I was able to modify some of the keyboard controls in the usual eduke fashion. When I quit that and went back to try it again, the 4th episode was gone again.

I just deleted all the extraneous files, left the grp file and eduke versions regular and debug. Now it seems to work. Something about the various extra files in the (perfectly working) old eduke folder was seriously jumbling the atomic version.

Confirmed now, works right, comes up the same way every time.

Thanks all, for helping me get it straight.
