Machineworks and 3D Realms Duke Nukem Mobile Kickstarter

Machineworks has just put up a Kickstarter attempting to raise $45,000 to bring the Duke Nukem mobile titles 'Duke Nukem Mobile' and 'Duke Nukem Bikini Project' to iOS

Quote

3D Realms and Machineworks to reboot the two original Duke Nukem Mobile Games on iPhone and Android phones.

In 2003, Machineworks and 3D Realms teamed up to create two best selling cell phone games, Duke Nukem Mobile, and Duke Nukem Bikini Project.

But, get this! Back then phones pretty much sucked for playing games, with small screens and having to use the chiclet numeric buttons for input. It's only a few years ago, but it seems so barbaric in hindsight. And although we did the best we could, we know that on today's phones we can do these games the justice they deserve.

They'll never meet that goal. Not after their Duke3D iOS port.

$45K? They'll be lucky if they get $450. Also, wasn't there a third DNM game?

Seems like they are going down the wrong way too, ingame Duke Cash? In App Purchases ;)

They want to port a simple sidescroller to iOS? I'm sorry but that's just a stupid idea. Sidescrollers tend to be most popular in times when they are the most practical genre due to hardware restrictions, and given the incredible power of devices such as the iPad 3, mobile gaming has gained the potential to be 100 times more complicated. They might as well port Manhattan Project to iOS and make some things (like having to rescue the babe and find the keycard in every damn level) optional, so that the player can focus on the shooting. And yeah in-app purchases really only work for good/popular games Posted Image

Why don't they actually make a game from scratch specifically designed for a touch screen interface? Maybe something similar to what Duke Nukem Critical Mass for the PSP was going to be like? That could be interesting.

Those games kinda sucked... This seems like a really bad idea, and 45K for that?
I agree with Micky they should make a new game instead, the concept of Duke Mobile isn't really worth reworking or upgrading.

I'm not against porting these games, because I'd actually like to try them at some point even if they suck? But 45k? Seriously? I don't expect people to pay me to do hobby work.

The thing is, the pixel artwork was the only realtively nice thing about those games, and they're not keeping that. The gameplay mechanics are just not worth repeating, as all you did was walk left to right while repeatedly pressing the fire button, no room for skill or even challenge. And what little interactivity there was in picking up and selecting weapons are removed and replaced with an idiotic in-game shop system.
Of course I'd try it if it was out, but with that concept it'd still suck, probably even more as that mockup screenshot IMO looks much worse than the original games.

Oh, and mobile games still suck.

Watch out guys, if you want to pledge $2000, you better hurry up, because there's only 10 of those left out of the initial 10 Posted Image

They've got $81 out of the $45000, and only 19 days to go. How Pathetic. With DNF, DN Critical Mass, the lame iOS port of Duke 3D and now this... hopefully it makes Duke developers finally realise that people actually don't like buying shit games, because for some reason, they think we like shit.

Even 3dRealms doesn't give a shit about this port if they don't want to give a mere 45k.

Well, if the bathroom sequence in DNF was any indication...

That sequence was so sexy I wanted Duke to jerk-off that turd.

What I'd like to see is them fix the controls for the DN3D port on Android. I can't jump onto the ledge from the box in E1M1 no matter how hard I try.

Why don't they port the first Duke Nukem, but add new SFX (because I'm sure it would be hard to replicate the original sounds)?

Duke Nukem Mobile Arena or something. It was not good, at least not for those phones like IGSRJ has in the video.

OT- But if you've not tried Wolfenstein 3d on the Ipod Touch/Iphone/IPad, you need to! It has great controls and all the works.

I don't want anyone to touch my Duke I and II. They would first replace all the nice spritework with "Kick@$$ m0d3rn grafixz~~~!!!1", then add a boring hard rock soundtrack like Critical Mass, then add lots of jarring Duke quotes as he blows up robots involving the word "fracking", then fuck up the gameplay.

As much as I love Duke, I just say no on this one. Duke going "Freemium" is like a slap in the face too to such a hardcore hero. It's time to kick ass and spend in game credits, and I'm all out of in game credits. I agree with the above sentiments too, I played the one Duke mobile and while it was fun waaaaay back in the day because the only other good cell game was Doom RPG, it's way too shallow considering I can play better totally free games on my phone.

I'd be more inclined to donate to a kickstarter for even something like an iOS and Android port of Critical Mass and that's saying something.

Edit: I guess it came out way before Doom RPG, faulty memory, but I didn't play it until that time. My point still stands. ;)

The iphone port of Duke 3D has improved controls now (although something about it is broken IIRC, and the iPad, which can potentially have better controls still, hasn't been updated), however it's become free and ad supported, so it's not like this hasn't happened already.

I think it's pathetic how Apogee/3D Realms have sunk so low that they're trying to scrape every cheap cent they can get from the Duke Nukem barrel.

I'm kinda tempted just to pledge $25,000 within the last hour, just to give them a bit of hope, then the time runs out and I don't have to actually pay anything.

I'd laugh my ass off if someone matched you and then you had to pay.

Well, i'd laugh a little. A chuckle.

It'd be funny in a sick way.

Yeah that's what I'm afraid of. No way I'm taking that risk. If I actually did do it then the developers themselves would probably top it off so they can get all my money.

Thanks to your link to this guy's review. I subbed him. Thanks Hendricks! IGSRJ is fucking hilarious!

I've never gotten the appeal of IGSRJ, it's just the Angry Video Game Nerd with Microsoft Sam instead of James Rolfe.

It's getting serious now guys, they've almost got 0.3% of their goal, with 5 days left. Plenty of time.
