Also, I would say "adapt or die" and "be innovative" is pretty far from the same thing.

I'd agree, one is talking about doing what's going to ensure survival, the other is often risky, and breaking into new territory.

Gearbox pursuing new territory for Duke would be risky, when they could go the easy way and give what Duke fans want - but what could be inventive, new territory for Duke that wouldn't end up being seen as contrived? Does every Duke game have to be a stepping stone the FPS genre in order to be taken seriously? I'm all for it if they have a great idea and direction, but it also runs the risk of over-thinking Duke.

As strange as it would sound but making a game the fans want(akin to Duke Nukem 3d) would break the new ground, again.

From listening to that podcast, it sounds like Randy knows what needs to be done to put Duke on top. However, we heard similar when it came to DNF, but I don't think Gearbox can afford to let the next game end up like DNF. They're going to have to go all-out on the next game to truly save the franchise.

Edit: Gearbox needs that Halo/COD killer mentality that Rockmx8 always had on these forums and the 3DR forums when it came to DNF. I'm serious. ;)

After listening to that podcast I'm even more positive towards Duke's future. It appears Pitchford genuinely loves Duke 3D and also understands where it's greatness lives - the way he cuts of the interviewer when he brings up the interactivity and the character - a game that does to the genre (and to gaming as a whole) what D3D did back in 1996, isn't that promise really what kept us waiting for over a decade?

And while I don't really agree with him (or other people stating the same) that the "culture has evolved since then", Duke's character was probably one of the things that I felt worked the least good in DNF, so maybe we want the same thing there as well and we just say it differently.

It was also interesting to hear his thoughts on used games, made a lot more sense than what we usually hear from devs.

I know this forum is old news, but I don't see any point in starting a thread just like this one..

I think Duke Nukem 5 has potential at being good, but this is up to Gearbox.. They have 2 options:

1) Make a game fans of Duke Nukem will love:
This sounds like the best choice to us, but to them, it may not be the greatest choice. Why? Becuase the company has to make enough money to be able to make Duke Nukem 6, and if only the members of this group bought the next Duke game, Gearbox would be in the shitter. Now, if the same amount of people who bought DNF bought DN5, the company would be doing great financially (as they already are), no matter if the game is good or not. They want to appeal to the fans, but at the same time, they want to attract new players. Now, I have a great idea, but it would never catch on to any company; Make a game that fans will love more than anybody else.. then if the fans love it, they'll be going around telling everyone, and then others will try it, and then the game would become.... POPULAR.

2) Make an innovative "next big thing" game:
This is what DNF was supposed to be apparently. I think it'd be great if Duke could once again, become the "next big thing" on the market, but if this fails, and the game sucks, then Gearbox will have issues. Though, if the next Duke game is so innovative, and makes all other FPS look like child toys, then this is great for the series, and I'd expect there'd be a load of spin-off Duke titles to follow.

But... I think maybe they should go with option 1, because if the fans like it, and then spread word that DN5 is great, then it becomes popular, and although it may not become "the next big thing" in gaming, it will become "the next big thing" to the fans, which this all would definitely boost sales for any future Duke titles. I would love to see Duke become the #1 game to everyone on Earth, but I just don't think that is the best priority right now, I think if DN5 works out, then maybe DN6 could be the title that brings Duke above all else. In terms of direction and what I want the game to be like.. Well, I think Duke should continue to fight the current alien race, only this time, a MUCH stronger Alien race has taken control of the other. So you still get to fight all the guys from DNF, but they're being ruled by a much larger threat. I don't want them to do time travel shit either.. they've done that TWICE, but I do think the game should start in outer space, leading to a fight with the Overlord, and then Duke lands back on Earth, only to find it looking like a post-apocalyptic planet, he then would fight the aliens here, finding a source to the aliens power, which then leads him to the larger alien threat. But if they're going for the prequel direction (as speculated).. Then it should have a COD joke, having a few missions in a war Duke fought in, and then it leads you to how Duke became so bad ass. You'll be fighting Dr. Proton's machines.. and so this game would have A LOT of terminator jokes most likely. I think a prequel would be kind of cool, if done right.. but I don't think it should be considered the 5th game in the series.
