Duke Nukem 5  "What will become of the next Duke game?"

Duke's run speed in 3D was quite ridiculous, I don't see why people get caught up on details like that. It's not like the reason we're here on a Duke Nukem forum in 2012 is because you could run so fast in D3D...

Not distorting the screen when using steroids would be nice. It's a rare item with a short use time, there shouldn't have to be a trade off like that!

Agree. Besides, the effect they chose is just weird. Why would you see a large embossed nuclear symbol in front of your eyes?

Oops, did I not once say I wouldn't vote down opinions?
The running speed is an important part of Duke's gameplay. And if the gameplay wasn't that good in D3D, no one would have cared about any kind of sucessor, and then this place wouldn't exist.
So the running speed is indeed a part of the reason why I'm here. :(
Too many shooters with too much aim for realism are out there. I wanna play not simulate real life/physics to a ridiculous extent.

DNF doesn't have unrealistic physics. For starters the clipping is about as unrealistic as you can get. "Oh I'm going to have a closer look at that object on the other side of the room there" *takes one step* "Gasp! There's some kind of forcefield!"

I don't like realism in shooters, but when you've got real graphical scenarios and realistic enemies and such, running 35mph backwards sort of feels out of place. Plus, when you can't run extremely fast, it opens new boundaries for things such as enemies that can crush you with attacks, like the Battlelord when he charges at you.

Perhaps there could be an upgrade/item that makes you run fast like the classic Duke 3d?

I actually like the fast running speed in DN3D (and Doom and all the other classic mid 90's shooters as well). In combination with a high difficulty, the game is all twitch reflexes and pure skill, and though the odds are stacked against you it never feels as though you are being cheated or that the game is unfairly balanced. It actually provides a decent challenge and is plenty of fun Imo.

I didn't say anything about downvoting, I think you got me wrong. And also I wasn't talking only about you, but more about other people who seem to think the MOST important thing to keep from Duke 3D is the exact running speed. But I probably misunderstood you.
About the gameplay, I completely agree with you. :( That's the main reason we liked the game, not the one-liners or the strippers or whatever detail we thought was cool. It's not like I'm saying Duke should be Rainbow 6 either, I just think the running speed in Duke 3D, especially with the steroids, is a little bit too fast.

DNF with all its flaws, still somehow had a kind of atmosphere to it that kept me playing it. So, no matter how Gearbox decides to go with the game mechanics, I'd myself like DN5 visuals to be dark and gritty, and the world almost like a film noir kinda place, and the story littered with black humor and gruesome violence, but still including Duke Nukem's over-the-top balls of steel attitude and one-liners like in Duke 3D. The story should also send Duke into space, maybe to another planet. This'd be a good opportunity to show the creativity of GB and create an unique home of the Alien race. Although, this time it has to be another race than in DN3D and DNF, as they're wiped out by now. Like many have said, the world should be quite free for exploration and filled with secret places and hidden gags, Duke Nukem style. Also, I'd love to see the use of vehicles, but better ones than that monster truck. Perhaps Duke's chopper bike, for example, or some alien vessel or . Also, the Nuke Auto-Destruct button in the end of a level would be cool to see again.

I'm not very fond on the idea of more characters than Duke and maybe some babes. That could take Duke to new places and develop his character, would be interesting and blah blah, but I like my Duke to be alone, surrounded by a whole civilization of alien invaders.

The weapon sounds should have more balls, and It'd be nice to carry more than two. Ammo crates, I believe, are not worth bringing back in DN5 and would be very kind off GB to go with weapon specific ammo, only found in finite amounts and certain places. These spots could change, though, and make the levels more interesting. Also, the appearing of enemies could be a bit random, and you could never know exactly what to expect, which would increase the replayability value magnificently. Also, regenerating ego or health is pretty lame in my opinion, and the system for ego like in Manhattan Project or Land of the Babes works much better. The ego then could be a shield that protects the health bar. Armor protects it also, and drinking beer (this time however Duke ought to be grown up and not get drunk from one can) would shield just the ego. It'd be complicated, but it makes sense. But, the easier way of course would just to have either health or ego, and I prefer the latter, where it's awarded from kills, boosts and "manly" actions.

Other than that, there's not much more to ask for over what we already got in DNF. I know I missed something I'd have liked to say, but these ain't my last words so it doesn't matter

Will GB do any of this? I just wouldn't know. I certainly hope they have better gun sounds, and the graphics are sure to be much better, I guess. Although, looking at their other games I'm not very hopeful of being blown away by the visuals of DN5, even if they matched my vision of a dark and terrifying world only Nukem can withstand and keep his attitude. The ego system as in DNMP and LOTB is highly probable, and the increase of interactivity, secrets and multiple paths or even open world.

I don't think gearbox is going to bother with ultra modern graphics.

One thing I didn't like about DNF is that all the characters felt like sex obsessed idiots and I ended up not caring the slightest whether they lived or died, and by extension I didn't care whether the aliens actually conquered the planet. I hope they at least try to fix this.

Couldn't agree more. I started playing Duke when I was too young to be playing Duke, but I remember thinking the first time playing "this is scary, how is this guy so cool during all this?" That attitude stuck with me throughout all these years. Duke 3D was gruesome and even terrifying if you think about it. I hope the next one feels that way too. Which reminds me, I hope the aliens or whatever the enemy will be, will sound more intimidating than they did in DNF.

Exactly, Duke Nukem games need one carachter and one carachter only...

I actually want to see the mouse come back as Micky Mouse or something and Duke just casually blows his head off :(

This thread made me replay DNF, or at least parts of the game that I can somewhat tolerate...

After playing The Hive, Highway Battle Part II, Construction Site, and the beginning of The Doctor Who Cloned Me, I realized it wouldn't take a lot to make the next Duke better and we do owe the developers at least some credit. Hear me out - what we were saying about replacing the key cars was done already; In The Hive level, finding those giant pill bugs that serve as a key; the only flaw was that they were too easy to find and the level was chopped up when it could have been one massive level of exploration, similar to The Abyss from Duke 3D. Finding the gas can in Highway Battle Part II was actually done right. But the fact that we had to find the gas can on several occasions before that was lazy and made that section feel redundant. I can see why they included that section in the demo. The power cell for the crane worked too. In TDWCM, using the security monitor to find the key code to get through the door was smart. The big problem with all of these sections besides level design, was the lack of enemies. Why take the enemies out of the puzzle or exploration sections? Just place a few around; no scripted ambushes everywhere the player turns. That would make the exploration aspect enjoyable and less quiet.

That, no regenerating health, no weapon limits, and better level design to accommodate these goals would be enough to make it a good game. I'd put that priority over fixing the game's humor (which does need work too).

If Gearbox released a patch that featured enemies in the puzzle and search sections, that alone would add a lot of replay value to DNF, but wouldn't be enough to save the next game.

PS -

Bring back Protozoid Slimers! They're an enemy I love to hate.

I think those head jumper things replace them in this game, they serve a similar function, and are IMO incredibly annoying (I'd prefer if they were taken out of the game actually, but then again I would have wanted most of the enemies, or at least their AI's replaced anyway).

Hopefully if the ROTT reboot is super succesful, Gearbox might consider going back to Duke 3D's roots. I think trying to appeal to COD and Halo fans like last time is a lost cause now, especially when they still have new games coming out. Gearbox should realize this and give up on that front.

The next Duke game will be perfect.
It will have absolutely no flaw!
It will be the first video game and in fact the first piece of software that will be 100% bugless.
It will feature Michael Jackson at some point and it will be just as epic as when he was still alive and he was at the peak of his most legendary concerts.
It will feature no weapon limitation to 2 weapons that you can carry.
It will not feature graphics that are at least 6 years older than the year when it comes out.
Having naked sluts on the screen 90% of the time won't be the main thing of the game anymore.
And last but not least, every single Duke fan that ever existed, including the 78 year olds, will finally be united through Dukedom Rapture and be completely happy with every little aspect of the game and everybody will agree that Duke's model is FINALLY THE one that the bible prophesied about.
The real Duke face that everybody defines differently, will finally come and unite nations and people of different ethnicity and religions under one banner of acceptance and agreement.

And to the first post of this topic, I have to say that expecting "George Broussard to die passing cancerous lumps into his toilet, like Elvis" is very unlikely.
My best guess is that his death will come from accidentally slipping his 360 gamepad inside his rectum while trying to masturbate with it and permanently clog himself with it.
Then being too shy to go to the doctors to have it removed, he will die of shame as his belly will balloon with his own 15 year long bullshit and he will explode and splurt shit and 2 weapon limitations cancer on everybody except me and a few others that agree with me because we will be protected by NO BULLSHIT SHIELDS!

BUT In all seriousness now.

I think the next duke game will be a game of the same level of quality/mediocrity found in all of gearbox's games released in the last years.
Look at Borderlands 1 and 2(I know it's not out yet but I've seen enough gamplay of it to be bored of it) and look at the gameplay trailers of aliens: colonial marines.
The hype delived by Randy Pitchford on all of his games is over the top and ridiculous just as it was for DNF.
If anybody ever saw Randy Pitchford hyping the shit THE SHIT out of DNF 1 month before release date, knows very well how fucking demented his hype campaigns are and how much you should trust such a person in the future.
I said it openly, both to his twitter face and on various forums.
I think he's a scumbag and cheap ass opportunist that deserves to choke on his expensive food purchased with the money that he got from DNF's sales.
That sealed it for me and turned me from an obsessed duke 3d fan and duke fan in general, to a person that doesn't care about duke nukem games anymore.
Even the act of playing dn3d reminds me of DNF now...
The next duke game needs to be done by a studio that is willing to treat it like a true triple A game and invest crazy amounts of money in it, money that no publisher will ever be crazy enough to risk on it, after DNF was received with such grades on review sites and on the metascore.

My only advice at attempting to bring Duke back as a triple A franchise is to start with cheap to produce Duke Nukem side scrollers like Manhattan Project and if they are good, the franchise can slowly climb up again with new sequels, up to the point where they can get back into the FPS triple A business.
After being dead for so long and after 15 years of hype, having it fail so bad, I just can't see how a new sequel could still be a triple A fps game and why would anybody risk another flop and loss of money.
I think lots of us realized it by now that DNF sold like mad, just for the fact that it had gained such a reputation in the gaming industry and everybody wanted to own it just for the sake of owning a piece of history...
A new Duke game will not have the luxury of failing and still selling like mad like dnf did.
A new Duke game that will even be DECENT, will most likely fail to sell properly due to disappointed DNF fans that are not going to be very eager to shell out more cash and risk getting a new mediocre fps game.

That's my honest opinion...

Duke Nukem 5 will feature Randy Nukem, Duke Nukems long lost brother and you will only be able to carry one gun... because there only is one gun... the devastating Hype gun; which you will use to shoot brainwashed gearbox fans. Randy Nukem's mission is to hype these fans to sell a trillion copies of Duke Nukem 5: The adventures of Randy Nukem.

Pretty much all the striked out stuff is blatantly against the rules of the thread. As for the Broussard thing.. dude! What are you on? Stop whining about Gearbox/DNF/etc and come back with a real opinion on what you'd like to see in Duke Nukem 5.

How I'd like the next Duke Nukem game to be:

1) Less colorful and more serious.
2)Large explorable areas
3) Secret areas
4) Gadgets that aren't redundant or gimmicks.
5) A game that is easy to learn how to play but hard to master.

How I expect it to be:

1) An unoriginal parody. If it was a movie it would feel more like Austin Powers than Alien
2) Large world with a bazzilion guns (ala Borderlands)

Why not prequel of Duke Nukem 1? Yes before he meet Dr.Proton but with HD graphic. And because it's prequel it will end with Duke Nukem 1's first episode. Yes, new prequel levels then game end with Duke Nukem 1 First Episode Shrapnel City. Sounds good?;)

Not really. Duke didn't really do anything too amazing before Duke Nukem. He was an infamous, and entirely self-proclaimed, hero before then. He fought in battlefields akin to Iraq or Afghanistan according to the modern backstory. Duke Nukem's first adventure was the first to include the elements that set him on the path to what we know and love. A duke nukem prequel of this nature would be akin to Jon St John doing voice overs for Modern Warfare.

It's been suggested quite a few times, actually. It's something i've considered doing myself with Eduke32, if I ever get some of my other projects finished and out there.

I don't see a need for digging through Duke's backstory for a new game. If they want to do the whole Dr. Proton thing they could just bring him back to life again. It's not as if the story was ever that important anyway.

An interview Randy made in this podcast gives a hint of what's next. Or at least that it won't be more of the same? He stresses the need for the next Duke game to be innovative to the industry, much like how Duke Nukem 3D was at the time. http://www.ign.com/a...ail-to-the-king

As much as I am victim to my own nostalgia of Duke 3D, I do somewhat agree that an innovated direction is the way to go for Duke, but only when it comes to pleasing critics. I don't think the next game needs to add anything new to the industry in order for Duke Nukem or FPS fans to enjoy it. Adapt or die I guess is the thinking.

Hasn't listened to it yet (it's so long), but that soundspromising. I really didn't expect to hear that from them/him, especially after the DNF Parody Pack.

Also, I would say "adapt or die" and "be innovative" is pretty far from the same thing.
