Give it a chance, Fresch might be the one person who can pull off a remake after all didn't he.......oh.

Come on, the worst that can happen is that the remake will never be finished. :)

Ha Ha, if you get bitten by a dog 3 times you will not pet the same dog not matter what Cesar Milan tells you, and our friend Fresh is not the remake whisperer. Plus Joe Siegler is not a man of integrity, he will bring nothing to any project he is involved in except false promise, whether you like him or not, he will have no effect on the quality of any modern game, making him irrelevant to anything positive about "Interceptor's" new game, in fact it kind of reminds me of the cheap move on Gearboxs behalf to bring him to Gearbox while DNF was being finished....get the old school guys on-board, give the game a bit of credibility......

Seconded, ROTT has much, much more potential than just nice multiplayer. A remake/reboot/whatever would need to create a fine-tuned combination of exploration, puzzle-solving, avoiding traps and intense combat, all packed into vast levels with lots of secret areas. And let's not forget the various bonuses from the original game :P

If a ROTT remake were to be made, I think I wouldn't mind if the developers deliberately refrained from all-too-realistic environments, as to recreate the feel of the original game :)

But the original game was all about Gratuitous Gore and Realism with Mysticism.

Oh, I was thinking about departures from realism forced on by technical limitations of the engine :) It's like you have rectangular rooms of fixed height in Wolfenstein 3-D and a castle with indoor and outdoor areas, catacombs beneath etc. in the Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

As for the SP mode in ROTT, I also initially felt a bit unusual with the unlimited ammo for small arms, but then got adjusted to it. It's just a different playstyle compared to the other FPS game of the era. As for the boredom part, the game offers lots of secrets to find, huge areas and different ways to play the levels through (including all the crazy bonuses :P).

In a reboot what I would like for the levels is pillars and parts of the walls made from square blocks reminiscent of the 90 degree angles the levels where restricted to in the original game with its modified wolf3d engine but embellished (cobwebs, dilapidation, decoration) they could even make some of the block pillars destructable (or not... it's not a requirement)... I just think they should give a strong hint of blockyness to the architecture to harken back to the original game.... and the ground would then be height mapped\variable where appropriate especially to go with how it's all on an island.... sort of a mix of the old and the new...

Also they should start out on an actual beach and enter in from the outside... and not just have it in the intro cut scenes and plop you right away in the middle of the island...

Also the weapon system was unique to the game and I think they should keep it... also the crazy powerups... another important thing IMO is the music... which should be as much like the original as possible but not so synthetic as it would not be MIDI this time...

ROTT music is absolutely awesome :) It's almost kinda hard to believe Lee Jackson wrote it literally while taking breaks from his tech support work (well, more precisely it was a bit the other way around, he had to take breaks from writing the soundtrack to do tech support, but anyway :P).

But what I really like about ROTT personally, and it's perhaps a hard thing to reproduce, is how all things fit together - music, sound, graphics, levels, gameplay - to make a very coherent whole. This is something not every game manages to accomplish, and even fewer take this to the level of perfection.

Another thing I would like a potential ROTT reboot developer not to skimp out on is atmosphere. ROTT wasn't just balls to the wall twitchy action. Some of the tracks where moody and atmospheric along with the levels they got attached to like foggy mountain which was literally foggy... some levels had moody lighting with the faux dynamic lighting they modified into the wolf3D engine. It may be harder to see it now since the graphics are so dated but it was pretty atmospheric for the time.

You know.. I was saying desctructable pillars may not be nessasary but I partially take that back becuase in ROTT you could destroy most props and even items you can pick up.... taking destructibility to the next level is something a reboot maker should truly look into.

But don't get me wrong from all this I'm not getting excited yet and I'll believe a reboot\remake is coming when I see it... and sadly enough not even some proof of concept screenshots or concept art is enough to prove it's coming.

Hmm, with all the powerful (if not overpowered) arsenal, that should only make sense. I think ROTT was the first game to actually show bullet marks on walls, a remake/reboot (I typed "rebott" initially :)) could just as well take a technology like the one used in Red Faction to its full potential with fully destructible environments.

This is pure speculation.
Joe's hint at ROTT on his Bio (the death of the whole world 30 years later by one of his descendants) relates to his personal history with the title, since he was one of the original level designers and testers.

Thats all there is to it

Not that you would have been able to finish the project if you actually had started remaking it...

I am so glad this isn't true. The only thing that sucks worse than a remake is Interceptor Entertainment.

Interceptor will have a playable game at Quakecon. Frederik Schreiber just posted this message over at 3d realms forums:

http://forums.3dreal...ead.php?t=38741

"Interceptor is no longer a Mod Team, but a fully established studio.

Most of the Interceptor Developers have an Indie/Modding background, and later got jobs around the industry. Interceptor is made of an All-Star Team, with developers who previously worked with studios such as Sony Online Entertainment, Naughty Dog, and Epic Games.

What we are working on, is yet to be revealed.
Keep an eye out for Quakecon in early August, where we will World Premiere a game than I'm sure you've been all eagerly awaiting.

If you are attending Quake Con, head over to our booth, where the game will be playable, and feel free to have a chat with Joe, Me, and other 3D Realms/Apogee veterans."

Looking forward to seeing what there working on.

Curse you for making me go over there after all this time...

However, there is still no confirmation that this is ROTT. It could be Shadow Warrior for all we know.

Absolutely right, I just didn't want to start a new thread. If 3D Realms/Apogee are involved are they working with Bethesda? I was under the impression that only Zenimax products and Hardware vendors can display there goods at Quakecon since the 2009 buyout. Is that the case?

I wish them luck if it's a PC exclusive designed for the hardcore crowd still starving for a return to oldschool shooter design. If it's a shitty cash-in they can all go fuck themselves. There's no in between.

Don't worry man, they won't disappoint.
They will surely try their best to go fuck themselves!
And you know, I just couldn't help noticing that Joe Siegler is part of their team now.
I mean Joe Siegler is surely going to help them with their coke machine filling and prevent them from ever becoming thirsty and dried of ideas impossible to implement.

The thing is, Fresch should remember that he needs to provide some decent paychecks before I bother pirating his games.
I won't just bother pirating his games for free.

How can they ever fail with this guy on their team?

I'm not saying it is or it isn't. I only hope so. It might not be this "yet to be revealed" game, but I hope we hear some good news about Duke 3D: Reloaded.

I've gone from the opinion that Duke Nukem as a franchise is cursed to now believing that 3DR, Duke Nukem and all of 3DR's back catalogue is cursed.

I don't know the details on this stuff, but isn't 3D Realms allowed to port or remake Duke Nukem 3D if they want to without consulting Gearbox? If so, I have my own personal theory on this. :(

I just looked through very old posts on the GBX forums and what was said in the concept stages of Reloaded (then still called Duke Nukem 3D - Next Gen)

At the very beginning Fresch contacted GBX for a green light. GBX said they don't have anything to do with former Duke Games. So he contacted Scott Miller. And we all know that in the end it was GBX who "granted" the license.

I don't know much about the backgrounds. But from the above it sounds to me GBX doesn't know too much about what they have the rights for or not (but then I don't like GBX and so I am biased).

<pure speculation>
Maybe GBX "granted" the license without even having the rights to do so*. Maybe no company has the rights to grant such a license because of the split rights for Duke Nukem (Scott Miller said in an interview that "it is complicated" regarding Duke's rights).
</pure speculation>

*) Even more of purest speculation on my part: Maybe GBX knew they cannot grant a license that would directly affect the sales of Duke Nukem 3D (a game still published by 3DR/Apogee) and thus said: "You may release it sometime" hoping Interceptor would lose interest if they only push the possible release date even further to "very maybe in the distant future". IMHO, a company that tells me that DNF will have secret levels and claims that releasing an SDK for (UEngine based) Borderlands 2 would take one year of work may do such things.

If this ends up like when Bethesda sued Interplay for releasing the "Fallout trilogy" (Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics) on Steam I'm gonna laugh my ass off.

Evolve PR just posted this:

"Going to QuakeCon? We'll be revealing the revival of a much-loved classic PC shooter at the show. What could it be?"

What do think the chances are that we might be seeing some form of Duke Reloaded come August?
