The Tree of Life. Didn't really like it. Malick's The Thin Red Line is among my favorite movies but there all the artsy stuff was carefully kept in balance with everything else going on. In The Tree of Life there's just too much of this nonsense. Moreover, classical/church music doesn't fit well with space imagery.

It's kinda like with David Lynch. Mulholland Drive was awesome but Inland Empire was godawful as the story fell apart after just 30 minutes.

The Avengers. Whedon's script made this work. The dialog scenes in the middle were the best. (Anyone who's watched Buffy knows Whedon is good at stuff like that.) Captain America looks lame with his hood on, which is probably why he spends most of his screen time, even when fighting, without it. They could have made it look better with a few simple modifications.

Was watching The Lost Battalion, a historical war movie about an American unit that got surrounded by Germans during the last phases of WW1. A homing pigeon named Cher Ami played a crucial role in the ensuing battle. The bird was quite a badass:

As Cher Ami tried to fly back home, the Germans saw her rising out of the brush and opened fire. For several moments, Cher Ami flew with bullets zipping through the air all around her. Cher Ami was eventually shot down but miraculously managed to take flight again. She arrived back at her loft at division headquarters 25 miles to the rear in just 65 minutes, helping to save the lives of the 194 survivors. Hm, I never thought of it as a horror movie. Most horror movies rely too much on lots of blood, bad lighting or a shaky camera. The really creepy ones can do without. Although I'm not much into this genre, my recommendations are: Rosemary's Baby, Ju-on: The Grudge (2002 Japanese version), Eraserhead, Ring (US version), Don’t Look Now.

I agree about The Ring. It's a very good movie that does not rely on blood & guts. The original Japanese version is not much different but it has some stupidly Japanese stuff that makes it a bit worse than the US version.

I usually like the Japanese/Korean way of storytelling, but in this case think the US version is much better, to a big part due to additional borrowing from Dark Water.

The idea someone could methodically bind and torture someone else for months, scares me; or the one who cooked up (wrote) the concept. So when my hair sort of stands up, it's a horror movie, for me, in my books.

Rosemary's Baby is a good movie, but it literally made me laugh in the end. Yet, I am into Japanese Stuff, Ju-on is on my list to watch -

That movie was a great example for cultural differences:
First I watched the uncut version on video. The US TV version was missing the boobs whereas in German TV they left out the bones sticking out of a broken leg IIRC.

Oblivion.
It's what you expect from a Tom Cruise movie. Bad acting (Olga Kurylenko is a complete fail, Andrea Riseborough deserves better roles). Poor story. Stealing everything from other films, no new ideas. Everyone behaves as dumb as possible to make the predictable plot and twists work. Production design/CGI is OK (except for the inevitable Mad Max low-tech areas). Sound is good.
