Alright, it's time I got a new monitor. Probably better to be 16:9 than 16:10 since I have a 16:9 tv connected and would like to have mirrored displays. Monitor will be used mostly for gaming. From the picture point of view deep blacks are really important.

You won't be getting deep blacks with an LCD or LED monitor. Although LED would be better than LCD, the deepest blacks come from plasma TVs, specifically Panasonic VT series or the defunct Pioneer Kuro from 2008 (best to date, nothing has beaten it yet). I have three 24 inch LED monitors, although they do have some ghosting issues in some places, they've been pretty good for me. Although they are listed with a 2ms response time which is supposed to cut down on ghosting, it still happens sometimes. Weird.

Bottom line, probably go with an LED monitor, but check whether it has ghosting issues. I heard the 24 inch ones did, but the 27 inch ones it's not really an issue. Not sure why that is.

The so called LED monitors are also LCD with LED lighting. I know about plasmas having 'true' black, but I haven't said I need only LCD. Although, plasma monitors aren't really popular, it seems. At least TVs are.

If it wasn't clear I asked to recommend me specific model. Going anything else than LCD/LED is kind of strange given the state of CRT, Plasma and OLED.

I personally recommend CRT monitors. After my CRT died I had to use this LCD monitor, and it sucks. Doesn't display anything like a CRT. Whole world of difference if you're working on sprites or in old DOS programs.

Yep, CRTs are sure good in terms of various resolutions support and sharpness.

I'm little late in this discussion, but I just got another hand me down from the office next door, two HP Dream Color monitors and the required hardware. I never seen anything this clear and crisp. That's what I do by the way, I search for second hand. I think those things new cost three big one's, I grabbed them for six hundred . :)

CRT is probably the best for sharpness, colour reproduction and response time, but by far the worst for irradiating your eyes to shit. I'll tell you what not to get, don't get a Samsung SyncMaster 2032MW. With VGA at least, the colours are all washed-out. Actually, scratch that, before I got my Toshiba REGZA, I used to use this for my 360 as well (via HDMI). I was blown away by how much better everything looked on my Tosh (which is an LCD).

I can only suggest you a brand, Samsung, you can select a 27" 16:9 LED for game playing.

I was about to buy Samsung SynchMaster but ended up with Philips 236V4LAB 16:9. Experienced outstanding gaming with smart control lite feature. It's great choice indeed. New monitors are likely to be introduced by ASUS and Samsung. Hold on for a week or two.
