[Release] Crash and Burn  "Duke3d User map"

#1

Hello all, this is my first release, I hope you enjoy this map. It's meant to have the raw feel of the original Duke3D maps.

Latest version of Eduke is needed.

Here's a teaser:

Just played it, good stuff especially for your first release! If you plan on making more maps, I think the streets could do with a bit more stuff in them since they felt a bit big and empty as well as the areas surrounding the buildings. Some stronger shading would also be a good idea. The gameplay was fun and you did a good job making the map feel a bit more lively with the crashing vehicles and explosions so I hope you're thinking of making more maps in the future

Thanks for your positive feedback, I think you made a pretty good assessment of the map. I'll try to use your suggestions for future maps if I find the time to work on them.

Hey, two releases in one day, that's cool. Judging at what is seen on the teaser the map looks good (despising the lack of shading) with a nice design, I think it worths a go.

BTW welcome to the forums colonel

I just played it and it was perhaps the best first release I've seen in recent years. I played it with some action packed background music (the default music is extremely dull so it's best that you include your own track, which will be played automatically if you give it the same name as the map if it's an ogg or midi file) which really suited all the explosions and number of enemies. I loved the layout, I loved the gameplay, I loved the scripted events. I think the outside areas were adequately detailed, at least compared to the rest of the map. Sure everything could always be more detailed, but your detailing was consistent and improving your level of detail is something that happens naturally as you continue to map. So please please PLEASE keep on mapping Posted Image

On the criticism side of things, I would add to James' list that there were some minor issues with oversizing in some areas; that wooden bar in the pub is a good example. I know that size is something hard to get right in Duke because he can run so fast and jump so high, meaning that if you do make realistic buildings, they feel too small and cramped, but it's just another one of those things you'll pick up.

There are always going to be a few people that go "omg this room is a bit empty this map sux Posted Image" but honestly those people need to STFU because like I said, this map has great layout, gameplay and scripted events like explosions. Posted Image

Edit: The map took me just over 8 minutes.

I liked it. Even on the easiest mode I got killed a couple of times from the "surprises". But I admit to being an inexperienced player. Good job.

One thing gave me a laugh. Walking into the bathroom you hear a scream and a toilet flush. Was that a startled hooker flushing her drugs down the toilet thinking you were the police?

LOL!!! I just intended it to be a comical part, but your idea is hilarious.

Yeah, that bit made me laugh. Obviously, I've just given it a play as well and was pleasently surprised, of course, it's not perfect, but no map is, actually, I was very impressed, shading is there, not just there, but it's had thought put into it, detail is a bit patchy but you said it was meant to have that "raw" feeling that the older maps had and it does, the important thing is there was actually detail. Scaling is OK too, it's not overscaled but it's not cramped, so there isn't really a complaint there. All in all, it was enjoyable and one of the traps actually killed me, partly because my mouse got stuck on something, but it killed me. Of course, there's room for improvement, but for a first release, this is top-notch!

Deffinitely potential here, I'll be watching you  :P

Just played it. As people have said, it's a very solid first release. The "scripted" events were the strongest point. For me, the gameplay was hit and miss. I did not like the beginning, with all the monsters attacking and the player having no choice but to run around and hope to find a weapon. Luckily, most of the map was not like that. And I did like the massive ambush towards the end. There were some very good ideas in this map, most of them executed well. I got stuck by the firetruck trap. I mean literally stuck, it didn't kill me, it just trapped me in a small sector. I don't really like traps in Duke maps, but that's just my bias I guess. Aesthetically, it wasn't bad but there was certainly room for improvement. There were some random choices with sprites, sizes and textures. Also some misaligned textures and kind of unfinished looking areas. The shading was good, but overall it did not have the polished look of say, Sin Center (which I think is a fair comparison because that is another retro style map). But these are small criticisms considering it is your first map. I hope to see more.

This was a fun map. The shading was well done and there were a lot of original ideas in this map. I managed to play it through from start to finish on Let's Rock difficulty. It took me 12 minutes and I'm pretty sure i killed everything that moved. I enjoyed the way you implemented the fire engine trap as it force me to move quickly in unfamiliar territory and it wasn't too hard to press on. The trap at the Gas station was tough and i left that battle with 3 hp. Overall, for a first map I'm impressed with some of the advanced features and effects used. I found it strange your secret areas didn't have a secret location tag to them. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Oh and I really enjoyed the design of the theatre building inside. That was really well done. It's too bad the other buildings didn't have the same style.

Good map, enjoyed playing it. Some nice ideas and traps. Both the massive ambush towards the end and the firetruck trap caught me by surprise, but I managed to survive them the first time around. Oh yes, I'm a bad-ass alright :P
Design is already pretty good, I'd say some areas could use some more polishing. For example, the ventilation shafts had a lot of misaligned textures, and the brown brick texture was a bit overused at places. But, like others said, for a first map this is very good. Keep it up!

Nice little map, took me 7minutes and a half. What I liked the most were the scritped events (especially the trick with the 2 firetrucks) and the small army showing up that you can see on the viewscreen. What I disliked the most was texturing, you've got good shading but I'm sure you can improve a lot on texturing.
Hope you make more.

Huh, i had 113 enemies to kill :S Anyway this map had cool gameplay. The mapping part lacked a lot of places. But the were places where you could see that you put in a lot of effort which pays. I would like to see more detail in your next map. I would also like to see a bigger enemy variation. But still a great map. And btw. You too seemed to scale most things wrong :S

Are you sure that's a girl? Judging from the face, I would say it's probably a tranny.

btw, the toilet is facing the wrong direction because the map is not designed for the HRP and the map author did not check to see which way the models would be facing. At least that's my assumption.

I got stuck between two walls (one slid shut and crushed the pigcop, and the other wall was a door that closed behind me). I couldnt get out, I was trapped. That killed it for me.

Muy bein bien, especially for a first release. "Cars crashing into shit" is a theme that never wears off with me, and I love how it was all executed in this map. There were definitely some weak points; like James said, the shading could be improved (especially in that bar), and a lot of the textures aren't panned/stretched right so that, in addition to some of the odd choices that were made for ground textures, made bits and pieces of the map kind of an eyesore. Still, the design was A+ throughout, and the game-play was fairly decent too. Hope to see something else from you (maybe something with a bit more longevity  ).

It´s muy bien EmericaSkater

Pretty cool map, i had to try it twice because first time I didn´t find weapons and my pistol sucked against so many monsters. For the future remember to put indispensable stuff (like the shotgun) in a place where the player is forced to go and not in a side path. In my 2nd playthrough I could not find the red card, which i did find in the first, even when i was running equiped solely with the mighty kick. So I still have to give it a third chance but after a rest.

I really liked this map. Especially the moment where you were stucked between two firetrucks - really nice idea
Finished it in about 10 minutes. Pretty short map, but gave me a lot of fun!
